The setting is updated from medieval Germany and a world of Brother's Grimm-like supernatural imagery, to the bayous of Louisiana and its own rich history of storytelling. I come from a southern family, thinking of my uncle driving us through South Carolina telling us ghost stories as kids and showing us the remains of plantations made me interested in this version.
Virginia Johnson is a beautiful woman with a line as lovely as she herself is. The choreography is more stark than in other productions, but Virginia uses the economy of movement very sensitively and is a fine Giselle.

I really appreciate the woman who is subtly taking Giselle's hair down as she's falling apart.

Creole Giselle is a monumental work transposed by Arthur Mitchell from the original work created in Austria adapted from the book Del' Allemagne by Heinrich Heine. Mitchell's production debuted in the Guggenheim Museum in 1971. The work is a romantic ballet performed in two acts. Here we see the betrayal of Giselle by her lover which has flung her into a maddening rage, which results in her demise of a broken heart. Here we see the arts reflecting the dynamic of social class and romance evidenced by the standoff between the peasant girl of the village and the bourgeoise upper echelon Mistress. A very well performed piece with superior grace and poise by Virgina Johnson.

I can't help it, every time I watch Virginia Johnson, I get emotional, her mad scene is deeply heart broken, her Giselle is trying so much keep going, struglering with herself and her sadly fate... She is phenomenal. I have a list of my favorite dancers in the role of Giselle, but in the mad scene, Virginia is simply the top 1 in my heart. This production is simply on point, the costumes so amazing (specially the willis!). What a wonderful production. What a wonderful ballerina. Bravissima!

This version was inspired. I remember seeing its London debut at the Coliseum in 1984, sitting in a "secret" technician's box with a dancer from the company (Cubie Burke - RIP). a couple of rows ahead of us were none other than Fred Franklin, and Ben Stevenson from Houston.

Thank you for posting this! I normally don't care for "innovative" productions. I'm normally very much a purist. However, I definitely make an exception here! This was wonderful! And Virginia Johnson is amazing! First Giselle I've seen since Makarova, who understands and rightly performs the Mad Scene! BRAVA!!!

Yes! I agree. But I haven't seen Makarova in the mad scene. I could see Maximova. Giselle is completely out of her mind... Unable to express herself because she doesn't know who she is or even where she is... Her movements are just lost words of a speech she doesn't remember... Confusion and absence till she dies.

Why doesn't Giselle in Giselle and the Willis Ballet wear some Peasant Clothes in her Past, some Noble Clothes in her Present, and some Willi Clothes in her Future?

Clarification, Silesia was Polish, not German, Germans were trying to take over and for a while did but after 3 uprisings Poland got Silesia back. I grew up there... and I grew up in Poland. During WW2 Germans tried to do the same, again but again were not successful. Albrecht was Silesian Prince and even id at the time that part was on German side I wouldn't call it German. It applies to both, Upper and Lower Silesia. The city where I grew up, Bytom had it's German name Boithen for a while and many Germans lived there but it was always a Polish city and still is. Now for Giselle... In Poland at the time was feudal system so there is similarity. Her performance is very different from traditional Giselle but very interesting. Still in general staying close to original story. I saw different scenes of it, the dancer dancing Albrecht is very good, my favorite in original version was very expressive and handsome Nikolai Tsiskaridze kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mseYa8V12ty-pp8.html
