This is the biggest issue with modern warfare and our current politcal leaders. In the past, when there were kings and queens as leaders, they went to war and their entire families were on the front lines fighting and defending civilians. That entire equation has changed, what we have now is a system where our world leaders never have to put their lives on the line. They sit from afar and press a button and people die. There is a complete imbalance in what war entails and what is risked by those who call for war.

When Witjawan says Indonesia dealt with multipolarity in a good way, he seems to completely ignore the CIA coup that installed Suharto and wiped out millions of his citizens for supporting neutrality. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever seen him deal with this issue on the show, which makes the constant passive agreement anti-Sino remarks locate his loyalty in Washington rather than Southeast Asia. Good interview though. He got Mearsheimer to clearly illustrate the most key points on all of the issues.

19:00 - Vietnam is hardly an "ardent supporter" of the US; it's simply pragmatic & realistic enough to stay equidistant between the US & PRC, so as to maintain its own independence, & play big powers off against one another for its own benefit.
@huberthumphry280
@huberthumphry280 10 күн бұрын
even though I would agree with the "pragmatic" description and not so much "ardent supporter", you got who they are balancing seriously wrong. It isn't with the PRC which literally had its last war in 1979 as Mershimer notes, with Vietnam, plus the Paracels dispute, plus the Spratlys. Vietnam gets no military aid from China, it gets it from Russia, that is who they are balancing. It is clear that ardent supporter is an exaggeration since Vietnam has expressed neutrality in Russia's conflict in Ukraine but also refused to condemn the invasion at the UN. But Vietnam has been getting US arms deliveries, most importantly warships

As noted in Haaretz, Netanyahu seems to boast of his knowledge of the US by saying, "I know what America is. America is a thing you can move very easily, move it in the right direction. They won't get in their way." He also boasts of manipulating the U.S. in the ongoing peace process, as the Washington Post points out: "They asked me before the election if I'd honor [the Oslo accords]," he said. "I said I would, but ... I'm going to interpret the accords in such a way that would allow me to put an end to this galloping forward to the '67 borders. How did we do it? Nobody said what defined military zones were. Defined military zones are security zones; as far as I'm concerned, the entire Jordan Valley is a defined military zone. Go argue." America, apparently, is moved by the Israel lobby. Evidence to the contrary has yet to emerge.

it's not gita's style to push or challenge his guest, he always lets his guest offers their views without being confronted. for example, 42:00 gita is correct that zionism was not meant to commit genocide, but john wrongly stated that they know from the start they're going to cleanse the palestinian because they couldnt have established a jewish state among palestinians. well, zionism started in late 19th century was to find homeland for the jews, not to establish a jewish state, therefore it's possible to live side by side as long as they're not praticing apartheid as in the original zionism. first generation of aliyah among zionists in 19th century was relatively peaceful, things gotten worse only since balfour declaration and jewish businessmen (rothschild etc) who bought many lands etc. but then, gita didn't try to debate john either though i think he knows john was wrong here.

This is extremely foolish and ignorant of China's history. During the cultural revolution for example, China export its marxist revolutionary teachings to many countries, provide training and arms to native armed groups (thus they are known as maoist revolutionaries), host radio stations within China itself for these maoist forces. For example, the Communist Party of Malaya which fought an insurgency against Malaysia's government has its radio station in hunan China. This only come to an end when Mao died and Deng took over. He decide that China should build economic ties instead of export marxist revolution and ordered these forces to step down. And they did. With the way China is going today, who knows if Xi will revive the cultural revolution again and build a cult of personality for himself?

KZfaq) South China Sea More Likely Flashpoint Than Taiwan Nationalism and liberalism are the two most powerful ideologies in today's world. Nationalism is a powerful force that shapes interstate relations. Liberalism is an ideology that leads the United States and its allies to believe they have a right to promote democracy around the world. Liberalism prioritizes spreading democracy and acting on moral principles, even if it clashes with realist goals. (Crusader mentality) Realism emphasizes state survival as the primary objective in the international system. Realist logic trumps other logics, including economic logic, in most cases due to the primacy of survival. Realism prioritizes state survival above all else, including economic prosperity and moral goals. When realist logic clashes with economic or moral logic, realism prevails due to the existential importance of survival. This raises questions about the effectiveness of multilateral institutions like the UN, vastly outspent by military powers. Multilateral institutions are created and controlled by powerful states, not the other way around. These institutions cannot compel major powers like the US, Russia, or China to act against their interests. The US, for example, often benefits from the rules it sets for these institutions and can disregard them when needed. China, as a new great power, is following established patterns. China is creating its own institutions (e.g., Asian Development Bank) and rewriting rules in existing ones to reflect its greater power. This is how powerful states behave in the international system. A recent article by Eliza Gheorghe argues that multipolarity increases the risk of nuclear proliferation. Under a unipolar system, a single powerful state can more easily police proliferation. Bipolarity can also lead to less proliferation if superpowers cooperate (e.g., détente between the US and USSR). A multipolar world, especially one with intense security competition between major powers, is seen as the worst possible scenario for preventing nuclear proliferation. This is because cooperation among major powers is needed to effectively control proliferation, and such cooperation is less likely in a multipolar world with intense rivalries. The US-China competition is used as an example where such rivalry makes cooperation on issues like controlling North Korea's nuclear program difficult. John Mearsheimer emphasizes the importance of intellectual curiosity for anyone who wants to understand the world. This curiosity should extend to various aspects of life, including international politics. Students should actively seek out the ideas of prominent thinkers and critically evaluate those ideas, forming their own independent understanding of the world order. Mearsheimer views his role as providing frameworks for students to develop their own understanding of international relations, not offering definitive answers. Students should actively engage with these frameworks, critically evaluating them and potentially forming their own theories about how the world works. This applies to all aspects of life, not just international politics. John Mearsheimer emphasizes the importance of both intellectual boldness ("hubris") and the willingness to learn from others ("humility") for students of international relations. Students should have the confidence to develop their own theories ("hubris") but also be receptive to alternative perspectives and the possibility that they might be wrong ("humility"). This "hubris-humility index" is a concept Mearsheimer developed with a colleague to emphasize this balance. Made with HARPA AI

A lot of respect for the professor. What I would like to hear is the consideration of the cultures' influences in the decision making, rather than focusing on how the rest of the non-Western world would make decision based on pure Western thinking. Remember, China would have to govern Taiwan island once they re-unified, which is unlike Israel (who would just go ahead to cleanse), or Russia (who would be happy if Ukraine remains a rump state).
