For users of baking soda or charcoal, those are super abrasive & can strip your enamel if used with brushing. If you want to use them for whitening purposes use them more like a rinse, with no added friction.

Yes! and on long-term use it's bad for your gums too, I could see it and my dentist too :/ But he and I a amazed by my last recipe : powder made of siwak (the same plant Gittemary is talking about, but she got it as a little stick), calcium carbonate (more gentle than bicarb) and a powdered algae I can't translate. Find what's good and soft for you, keep the abrasive for celebrations XD

ACTUALLY, this is complete nonsense. Baking soda has a Mohs hardness of 2.5 where as enamel has a Mohs hardness of 5.0. futhermore it has actually been ranked on the relative dentin abrasivity index as a 7. 0 - 70 is ranked as low abrasivity. Activated charcoal being 2 - 3 Mohs rates similarly. Sensodyne pronamel for example has an RDA of 34. It's better to check the tube as a whole and stop talking rubbish.

I have watched videos by a functional dentist who is not too keen on charcoal toothpaste for that very reason. Some people may have softer or more worn enamel than others.

Thanks for the great tips!! We are making baby steps throughout our home. We are working our way through our conventional toiletries, replacing them with homemade lotions and other more sustainable products. I find bamboo toothbrushes too dry and grippy, sucking moisture from my mouth, it makes me gag. So I've had to settle for recycled plastic toothbrushes. I've also heard chewing on certain foods help with dental hygiene, I would rely on it but apple are good and so are peppermint leaves. So I keep a pot plant of mint and bring an apple to work just to freshen up instead of using gum.

I too reuse my bamboo toothbrush by putting the bristle end into soil and print the name of the seeds planted on the handle. 🌸 it’s better than the plastic markers. You can sand the handle and change the name printed to reuse again.

Not sure if this is specific to me, but my dentist said that the waterpik type situations are in addition to flossing rather than a replacment as you still need the friction of something solid between teeth

I have been using bamboo toothbrushes for a good few years now and really like them, also the tooth tabs from Lush first moved into my home a few years ago. They have some nice flavours but come in a recycled plastic bottle, I only needed 1/2 tab to brush my teeth and they would last ages. Then I've discovered just usual white tabs in my zero waste shop in Edinburgh and they come in little paper bags which I prefer. I tried the charcoal tooth powder from Georganics but I don't like it and my sink turns into a black muddy pool when I rinse my mouth. Tongue scrapers are difficult to use when you have a tongue piercing :D Haha. How do you make mouthwash at home ? I would do oil pulling every now and then for 10 minutes or so. I would like to know if Jens follows the same routines as you do, now that you've been living together for a while. My bf does not care too much about the environment, unfortunately and also prefers usual tooth paste. We don't live together and whenever I would show him neat things which are more sustainable he would say "let go Annika, don't take everything so serious" ... which is hard to take sometimes.

I use a copper tongue scraper, bamboo tooth brushes, and a water pick flosser thing. I also have tooth tablets i think theyre dentabs, but I don't love them so I tend to use them when im travelling (theyre so convenient for that). I'm still on the search for a good toothepaste alternative that I like, for now its just picking brands that are doing good things. I'll have to try one of those paste ones that come in a jar as so. Those mouthwash tabs look cool, I don't use mouthwash but I think I will get that as a gift for my sister! She still uses those giant bottles of listerine : p

Hey there, so I first have a question about toothtaps... I have been using them for a while now and I have found that they tend to dry out my gums? So far I have only tried one brand because it was localy available to me, so could it just be the brand? So now I basically use my toothtabs a few times a week and apart from that toothpaste. Which is why I bought the geororganics one a while ago, because it comes in class and it honestly is alright. I neither love nor hate it, I feel like it gets the job done although it REALLY tastes like peppermint and when it gets a bit warmer it of course melts a bit. I would say it is a good alternative when you have it available to you but once it is finished I will go and try out some other ones first. (And I am not a dentist or anything even close to that so I have no idea if it is healthy for you or not, it worked for me so far and since they are allowed to sell it I just trust that they sufficiently tested it beforehand ;)). Anyways, have a lovely day :)

I have tried several bamboo toothbrushes and have sort of gotten used to them....but I really don't like them much. After some use, the bamboo is pretty rough and I fear splinters in my fingers or my mouth! I may go back to plastic, but I would like to find one where you can replace just the brush part and keep the handle to use over and over. I really want the bamboo to work, but.....it just isn't for me. :(
@xerrias

I've been using them for years and never had a single splinter or even noticed it getting rough. Maybe its the brand you're using that isn't great, or you're being really rough with it? I've never heard of this problem before.

I had the same problem for a while! Now after brushing my teeth I dry off the toothbrush with a towel and then rub a tiny bit of coconut oil on it, you won't taste it next time! It's the same with wooden items, you have to take care fo them with oils to make them last longer. It works perfect.
