Its so sad that these huge companies do this, it takes items away from charity shops, which I use because not only am I giving a garment a new life, but supporting a good cause.

the good thing is that I don't like buying clothes online, so these kind of secondhand shops are not an option for me. I prefer to go to the local shop and be surprised by what I can find.

I used to work at a sporting goods store (Academy Sports + Outdoors) and we had hundreds of T-shirts come in for a 4th of July sale. There was a printing issue and the stars on the American flag were messed up, so the shirts were all thrown away. BUT, not before they were shredded, so even if someone was dumpster diving, the shirts were unusable. America. 🙄

We done, Gittemary! We just had a conversation on IG Live about this very topic and you nailed ever valid point and then some. So much money is gone into keeping the modern consumer in the dark about what's really going on behind the scenes. I love how circular fashion is becoming so desirable that even the fast fashion giants want in on the action when they should absolutely be called out for doing so. It means that the truly circular fashion brands such as ours absolutely have something of value worth protecting.

My wife and I are full-time resellers of primarily menswear, footwear and some segments of women’s clothing. ALL sourced 2ndhand at the thrift stores, garage sales, etc. And now the thrift stores have gotten savvy and are pushing us resellers away from purchasing as much as we once did) items we then have to take a risk on reselling on our platforms, (we use eBay and Poshmark, Mercari), and their loss of my business is simply because they’ve gotten extremely greedy. One chain now employs a computer program that is tiered to place an extreme premium on what their research says deserves it. I guess a lot of it does move to their brick & mortar crowd - saying as it’s still a veritable “bargain” over MSRP, but in many cases, the prices on their tags are about the best that we can hope/ expect to get after waiting for the right Customer online.

As usual, you drill down to the heart of the matter, Gittemary. You are the best for well-researched, informative, sustainability content. Just shocking what these fast fashion businesses are willing to resort to. The sneakiest kind of greenwashing.

I think the EU is needed to make some rules. Back in the fifties, all USA made clothing had a union workers label. And I would like them to limit the use of certain materials that hamper recycling. 1) make worker union label mandatory including date of production for any piece sold in the EU. Transparancy of production is essential. 2) make readable material labels mandatory, with a proper colour/font. Now H&M includes 20 languages in grey-on-black 7pt font. Make that a single language, 12pt, black on white requirement. 3) Prohibit oil-based materials for clothes, maybe an exception for swimwear.We did centuries without lycra and polyester, we can deal with that again. 4) Enforce free-of-charge return shipping of used clothes and demand recycling of the materials by the manufacturer. Especially needed for sneakers. This will make them think three times weather to bring a certain piece to the market.

@lovemadeinjapan
@lovemadeinjapan 10 ай бұрын
@@karolinakuc4783 Those are mostly greenwashing and removing transparancy instead of adding it. Enough companies using it an still selling junk. I get GOTS stuff, but not because it says GOTS, but because the company using it has a good business practice. I think we really need some Brussel effect here to clean up the mess it is now.

Hello Gittemary! I'm so thankful for you making this video! I am quite upset with these brands but also with myself for actually believing that 'we're making a step in the right direction'... I've learned so much from you, other creators, research, documentaries etc that I should've known better. All this to say; I highly appreciate this type of content! I personally am over the lists of 'what not to buy: water bottles, menstrual products...' type of videos. I mean, I get their value for beginners but I've passed that point and there are soooo many of those videos, especially at the beginning of the year. You have absolutely found a profound way to stay relevant, innovative, and necessary in the sustainable creator world. I absolutely love this kind of content because it teaches me to think further than the visible ways of waste, to get insight in the society I live in, and to become a smarter and better person. Please never stop doing what you're doing! You have a huge impact ---- in fact, I think you deserve a 'The impact of Gittemary content on the world'-video! I know it's not probably not quantifiable but I hope you sometimes take a moment to sit back and realise what you're doing. With love

Hi! I couldn’t find a video on your channel about it, but did you ever talk about tk maxx/tj maxx etc? I know there was a big controversy a couple of years back with some designer brands burning their leftover stock because they didn’t want them sold at tk maxx and ever since then I’ve wondered about how these types of stores affect the environment. Would be interested to hear your opinion on this :)

100% prevention over “recycling”. I think the EC are proposing to work on end of waste criteria for textiles but after plastics. It’ll be interesting to see what’s in the scope of those criteria.

Another problem is that those brands are selling with almost every single perches of second hand stuff some of there new clothing. It’s actually just so consumers feel like being super eco friendly, when they are actually trapped into buying more than they wanted “because part of it is eco friendly”. 😩

Great video, so informative! I would love more videos like this as I've become really interested in the environmental impact of fast fashion and what we can do about it. I used to be somewhat interested in fashion and trends but since the pandemic I've completely changed how I view clothes and fashion. Last spring I committed to not buying any new clothes, shoes or accessories for a year. I'm about 8 months in and I don't think I'll ever go back to buying new items even after the year long experiment is over.

I think it’s good but here in the US we have goodwill and I would rather support them, a company that started out as doing something good and not a brand that is making an app because they produce too many cheap clothes. I don’t buy clothes often, jeans I buy every 10 years or so and shoes it’s even longer than that, we don’t need to shop that often for clothes and people should learn that.

I had to get clothes from the Thrift Store. I swear it felt like I had to make a choice. Is it worth buying thrifted clothes? Or is it worth buying new? I went to Value Village and Goodwill. I looked at my other half and was like, is this even worth it? I did get a skirt, dress, a blouse, and a cardigan, all for $33.00. But this is good to know. Thank you! 😊

If you live in the EU look up your local recycling station; by law they have to recycle fabric fibres from 2023. Not necessary for new clothing but eg. insulation. Outside the EU I don’t know. Good luck being creative in your search for a more sustainable solution.

You can use them for pillow stuffing if you'd like. I had some worn clothes with holes in them and I just put them into my pillows and it helped fluff them out. They're not as soft because I just folded them and stuck them inside but I think if you cut the fabric into strips, it'd be softer.

This is so true! I fell into the H&M trap some years ago because I believed that they'd actually recycle it (naive, but I really wanted to believe it, I guess...) and I used to buy my underwear and socks there bcs it was affordable and not something I want to buy second hand. I only ever donated clothes there that could not be worn anymore bcs of stains or the fabric was too worn out, but it still bothers me in hindsight. Luckily I know better now and there are also better fabric recycling options where I live now. Still doesn't solve the underwear problem since even if I safe up money and buy from sustainable brands the quality is usually not good, so not worth the money... If anyone of you knows about a sustainable brand that sells high quality underwear, please let me know!

@@karolinakuc4783 Knitting all my socks is not really an option for me. It is a goal of mine to learn that, but I won't be able to make thin cotton socks that way. I guess on the long run, learning how to make my own underwear is the only really good option, but not feasible for me right now.
