Historically informed new recordings of virtuoso ‘duo concertantes’ scored for a popular 19th-century combination of instruments by the ‘Paganini of the Guitar’.
Born in the south of Italy in 1781, Mauro Giuliani settled in Vienna in 1806 and quickly became famous as the greatest living guitarist. As the city’s leading light in the classical guitar movement, Giuliani was a teacher, performer and composer of a rich repertory for the instrument (nearly 150 works with opus number, 70 without), much of which Brilliant Classics has recorded to an extent unrivalled by any other label.
With this album we turn to the combination of violin and guitar which inspired a great deal of attractive music written for amateur performers, often featuring operatic melodies in variation sets such as Giuliani composed for the opening of his Op.25 Duo Concertant and the second movement of his Op.125 Serenade. Composed in Vienna in 1812, the Op.25 work is the most complex and imposing duo of the genre, beginning with an expansive sonata-form movement and continuing with a lyrical set of variations in which the two instruments alternate between soloist and accompanist.

Mauro is the most famous of multiple composers with the last name of Giuliani in the region where he lived, Brilliant Classics has recorded works by at least one other, that being that disc of works for clarinet and harp. The liner notes in the BIS set of the flute and guitar works states this.

Wunderschöne Interpretation dieser drei fein oder perfekt komponierten Meisterwerke im gut phrasierten Tempo mit seidigem Ton der genialen Violine und schimmerndem Klang der ebenso genialen Gitarre. Der intime und perfekt entsprechende Dialog zwischen den zwei Virtuosen ist wahrlich ergreifend. Alles ist wundervoll!

Complimenti e grazie infinite! Veramente non ho parole. Violino e chitarra magnifici. Qui Giuliani dimostra davvero di avere invenzione, come peraltro anche nei Lieder. Qualcuno può spiegarmi perché di solito questa manca nella sua musica solistica? Limiti melodici della chitarra? Mah!

Well, somebody has to be a bit critical. Now, as far as the guitar gies, it's good, but quite simple. Still I wished I could play like this, confidently, precisely. But the violin part deceives me. It's one thing to put a personal touch, but some of them are a bit out of line. Still, if I played the violin, I'd wish to be able to play like this, following the score faithfully.
