Give Me An Answer with Stuart & Cliffe Knechtle

Күн бұрын

Cliffe Knechtle has a great conversation with college students at a campus in the southwest US.
The "Give Me An Answer" ministry began as an outgrowth of the dialogues Cliffe Knechtle has had with students on various university campuses throughout the United States. These universities include the University of Maine, Harvard, MIT, University of Florida, University of Texas, University of Wisconsin, University of Minnesota, University of California Los Angeles, University of California San Diego, Berkeley, Stanford, University of Hawaii and the University of Washington. Cliffe spoke on these campuses in front of the Student Union or Library at noon for five to ten minutes. At the close of his initial remarks, he'd open up the time for questions and answers, which usually turned into a two to four hour dialogue with students. His crowd size ranged from 25 - 500 students at a time, and between classes, new students would join the discussion. This is an extremely effective way to reach a large number of university students with the Gospel of Christ.

Cliffe, For the first girl, it's very simple. Many Muslims use the John chapter 16 to show that Jesus is speaking about Muhammad. Well, for the sake of argument, let's say it is taking about Muhammad. So according to the Quran, who sent Muhammad? Obviously Allah sent him. And who sent the spirit of truth? Well in John chapter 16 Jesus says he sent the spirit of truth. Well if Muslims are going to say that Muhammad is the spirit of truth then that mean Jesus sent Muhammad. And who sent Muhammad again? Allah. This whole argument she is making, completely collapses on itself because she is saying Jesus isn't god, yet the logical conclusion to her argument shows that Jesus is God. Complete contradiction.

@mollyambass7231 3 жыл бұрын
@@JohnSmith-db2wl I don’t think God is a gender: he is spirit so he is not a gender. But in the Bible, God is known as “The Father”, and from what I’ve observed in the way he spoke to many people, God portrays himself as having a patriarchal language (so like a fatherly language). That’s why I believe Moses and the rest of the prophets/disciples wrote about God as if it was a “he”. Anti-woman? I don’t believe so. I believe that we are all made equal because in God’s eyes: it states in Genesis that mankind was made in God’s image. However, God made man first and then made woman FROM man. And when Adam and Eve sinned, unfortunately, one of Eve’s punishments was that because of her actions, men will rule over women. 🤷🏾‍♀️ Ever since, history has observed that in almost every civilisation that existed from the very beginning that this Earth was created, men have ALWAYS had ruling power. It wasn’t a period of 1400 years that the Bible was made John, evidence found today proves that the New Testemant was written around 2000 years ago, around the time Jesus died. And the Old Testament was written by Moses (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers & Deuteronomy) and other prophets who lived around 2000-3000 years BEFORE Jesus was born. So that’s more than 1400 years that all books of the Bible were written.

Hello AskCliffe. I believe a more direct answer to the gentleman's question of; "Where in the Bible do we have a verse that couldn't possible, on any level have been conceived of my a mortal mind of a patriarchal, pastoral society from the iron-age level that we know that this originated from?" (11:18) would be to refer to a couple passages in the Old Testament. First, Proverbs 6:6-8: "Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest." It would not be for thousands of years that humans would discover that ant colonies are made up of females. Second, Job 38:31-32: "Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion? Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons?" We had no idea that the stars that make up the Peides are gravitationaly bound until recently. We also did not know that the three stars in the belt of Orion were moving away from each other until thousands of years after these verses were written. While Mazzaroth is still an unknown to us today, Acturus is a star that is moving very quickly in a way that is yet to be understood. Also, we had no idea it was dragging thousands of other objects with it until recently. These are all things that God mentioned thousands of years ago well before any of the subjects were even remotely well understood by "patriarchal, pastoral, iron-age Judea." I believe your answer was good and true, however, as it did not go to the face value of his question, I feel the deeper truth you were trying to relay will fall upon deaf ears. Thomas, this gentleman and myself are all looking for something we can touch. Thomas found it on the very body of the Living Christ. I found it in Psalms 19:1 "... The heavens declare his Glory and the firmament shewth his handywork." This young man was looking for it in prophetic, scientific declarations. To have his wandering mind stilled, his questions must be answered on face value. The deeper truths he will ask later can be answered later. I love your work, please keep it up and keep sharing!

"It would not be for thousands of years that humans would discover that ant colonies are made up of females." Haha dude, all Hebrew nouns have either a male or female gender. Female nouns typically end with the letter "He", and since "nemalah" ends with a "He", then the noun itself is female. So when it talks about "ants", of course it gets a female pronoun, because it's a female noun. Has nothing to do with miracles, lol. I mean no real disrespect, but I found that quite funny. "We had no idea that the stars that make up the Peides are gravitationaly bound until recently." "Can you tie the chains of the Pleiades" refers to the seven stars of "The Pleiades", which can be seen by the naked eye. It's been known since 1600 B.C., and many cultures have names for it. You're reading way too much in the text, while it's apparent meaning is that the people back then believed it to be a particularly cold part of the sky, and unchaining these stars would release the cold and destroy the earth. This is what you actually find in the old commentaries of the Jews (see Rashi's exegesis). "We also did not know that the three stars in the belt of Orion were moving away from each other until thousands of years after these verses were written." How does the expression "can you loose the straps of Orion" imply that these stars are moving away from each other? It has a similar meaning to the one before, and they're connected. Rashi wrote: "to bring out its heat, to mitigate the cold of the Pleiades". Straps and chains are obviously used as imagery here. It's like how people draw lines between stars in constellations to create some kinf of an image. And these stars can all be seen joined together, and they don't separate, so in their eyes, from a literary point of view, they were bound together. The text is asking the reader if they have the power to keep those distant stars in formation or if they can cause them to break apart. The point being that it's God Who's holding them together in the way they appear to the observer. Chains and straps don't describe gravity; they describe the objectively verifiable observation that those clusters of stars are always seen together in the same way. We now know that gravitational pulls keep them in formation like that, but you're retro-fitting a modern day understanding into an ancient text. I understand why you would want to do that, but it isn't very convincing. I'm not saying that such miraculous descriptions cannot be found in Biblical passages, but the ones you're mentioning here can be easily explained in a more down-to-earth manner. "While Mazzaroth is still an unknown to us" Means "all other constellations", according to Rashi. "Acturus is a star" Bible doesn't say Arcturus though. The text mentions Ayish, which according to Rashi is: "The largest star in the Pleiades, to which many stars are attached." "These are all things that God mentioned thousands of years ago well before any of the subjects were even remotely well understood" Yeah not really though. Just your imagination running wild.

@@XaeeD Thank you for the reply and perspective. I did find out later that Mazzaroth quite literally means the constellations, but thank you for that info. As for the female noun for the word ant, this is interesting. The word "way", "derek" as used in the verse, is masculine, but the pronoun "her" was added due to the previous noun being female. Do you know of other examples where objects were given female nouns? Not arguing, just trying to learn more. As far as the stellar verses go, it doesn't matter how long it has been know or if any other culture named it. I made no claim on those concepts. The verse is claiming to be God asking Job if Job can perform certain tasks. The verses need to be read within the context of the conversation. Imagine a conversation between a weak man and strong man. The weak man is talking to the strong "man" and asking him why he is doing some thing. The strong man replies by asking if the weaker man if he can perform the same tasks the stronger man has already accomplished. When a strong man asks, "Can you wrestle an alligator?", it implies the strong man can. The strong man is saying when you can do this thing, you'll understand why I am doing other things. The same goes here when God asked Job "Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades?" There is an implied, "Because I can!" or even an, "I did." The verb used to describe their 'grouping' is qāšar. It literally means, "to tie together". God is asking, "Can you tie these stars together?" This is paired in the same verse with, "or loose the bands of Orion?" Don't belts go, "on" and not off? Shouldn't God have said this in the opposite way? "Canst thou scatter the seven sisters, or tighten Orion's belt?" You say I am reading into it, but I say you are taking away from the plain reading of it. Job is questioning God's legitimacy on bringing forth the pain and suffering he has endured. As an answer God is telling Job that once he can understand the mysteries of the universe and is powerful enough to make them so, then Job will understand the complexities of God's ways. We see groups of stars that are close to each other, but are not bound together and other groups are not. You want to claim I am adding to the text, but God picked specific stars and made claims about their relationships, some are bound and some are not. I am saying this was not known by humans to be the truth until millennia later. It is plainly in the text to be read by all. Maybe my understanding of the nouns/pronouns used in the Proverbs passage was faulty; it's possible .. probable even, but no one knew the Pleiades were "tied" together and no one knew the stars of Orion's belt were moving apart. God did, and God commanded it to be written.

Yeah I disagree with Cliffe on that point. You could even point to the internal consistency as well as fulfilled prophecy. I don't see anything wrong with showing that the Bible is the word of God. William Lane Craig and a few other evidentialists use this minimalist approach where showing that the Bible is innerrant and the word of God is something that comes later on once a person has been converted.

I was thinking the same thing. Yes prophecies of the future are the strongest evidence that the Bible is the word of God. Over 330 plus of Jesus alone. Not counting all the other ones. Some have done the math of the probability of a few prophecies coming true. And its mindblowing. No other Book in existence has done anywhere close to what the Bible has predicted.

I think Cliffe's point is that someone can come to believe in Christ without assuming or believing that the Bible is divine/the word of God. You can look at the historical accounts of Jesus and look at them as historical facts and still put your faith in Jesus. I agree with all of that. However I disagree in minimalist/mere Christianity approach.

I don’t know if Cliffe was just trying to avoid confrontations with the first muslim lady or he was PC influenced because it was just soo easy to destroy her ideas. Her first question was from John 16:13. Just going back above to John 14:17, Jesus talked very clearly who that spirit is “the Spirit of truth. The world cannot receive Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you do know Him, for He abides with you and He will be in you”. “We can’t see the spirit and it abides with us for ever”. I don’t see how the dead and paedophile Mohammed falls in the context of invisibility and immortality as specified in the verse. Her second question was from Deuteronomy 18:15. “The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own brothers. You must listen to him”. God was actually talking here to Moses. If for any minute any Muslim thinks this is about Mohammed, then they are just self destroying. If this is true, then Mohammed was a Jew and from Israel. Can they really stand this?
