Learning to accept failure is a lesson more people should be allowed to experience freely and safely

Man. I’m 44 years old and just started taking drum lessons. Several people I know were like, “So… You’re just going to start playing drums now?” And I get it, there are actual children out there that can play with one hand better than I can with two…. I’ve seen toddlers play better than I can. That said, so what? What’s that got to do with me? I like to do stuff. It’s fun. I think in a while I’ll probably be good enough to play with some other really bad musicians.

I once met a guy in his 70s who was an amazing guitar player. I assumed he must have been playing all his life, but he said, "no, I actually started in my 40s". but that's still 30 years of playing, plenty of time to become a master. He was touring with his band by his 50s. it really put things into perspective for me

Good for you for learning regardless of the doubters. I'm trying to learn new things these days and get those same comments. Keep doing what you love.

I play drums and guitar, and have done so pretty much my entire life. I’ll tell you that so long as you play everyday some amount of time, you will definitely progress. Sounds stupid and so forth, but when you are in the middle of being awful and want to give up, just keep on going. Play something every single day. You’ll get there. Oh! and use a metronome every time you play.
@FamousByFridayАй бұрын
@@donaldsmith5667 Thanks! Yeah, I’ve stuck to it. I can play a bunch of songs badly now and I’m learning fills. I’ve got a little practice pad too. It’s been a lot of fun.

I’d watch a tree planting video. Thank you for the encouragement. I have a lot of fear around underperforming and not being good enough. Funny how fears can stop us from going for something. It is in conflict with my values too; I don’t think art has to be perfect to be worthwhile, and that the process in and of itself is valuable.

This is such great advice! I really do have trouble allowing myself to suck.

Thanks for posting this. It's very motivating, and kind of makes me want to revisit my own WIP art recordings I have saved on my drive. Not only is it so important to allow yourself to suck so you can get started on whatever you're creating, but if you don't give yourself permission to do so, you can end up never documenting the progress you inevitably make. I used to overlook that a lot, but now? I think it's time to revisit my old stuff and appreciate where I've improved.

I like to yell “NO LEARNING CURVE, ONLY PERFECTION”, because it reminds me of what a ridiculous standard that is. I wouldn’t accept it if someone else held me to those standards. Why am I allowing myself to hold me to those standards?

The thing that helped unlock my creativity recently was the determination to “make it stupid”. When you’re “smart”, people have big expectations of you, but every time I tried to sound smart, I felt stupid. And everyone who acts smart looks stupid to me. So, I figures, just be stupid then! It’s more fun anyway! Blehehehuehuehueheu

I haven't been songwriting because I expect every song to be great. Its so dumb. lol It's hindering my creativity. I needed this short.

Basically, get used to failing a lot/ getting over the fear of failure. As an artist, i struggle with this, but I've slowly come to understand that fear is part of the process not just in art but in life as well.

People tend to think that they should be good right off the bat.. And not just that, people think they should not just be good, but be a natural. Some songs are written in one go, person sits down, writes the whole song in one go, and it ends up on the album pretty much exactly like that.. Many of us try for a few hours to make a song, get nowhere, get demotivated and stop... Meanwhile, some of the best musicians out there are spending DAYS writing a song. The all-in-one-go song writing is SO RARE, most of it is days and days and days and days of failures until you strike gold. That is if you're GOOD already. You're gonna suck at whatever you're doing for a LONG while. Just keep doing. It's the ONLY way you'll get better. Same is true for sports, exercise, any job you take or straight up just living life. You're gonna fail more than succeed. That's a guarantee regardless of what natural talents you're born with. There's a reason big artists spend 2 years on a record.. That's at least a year worth of abject failures right there. Professionals just failing for months and months. You, me and most everyone else, we are non-professionals, we should NOT expect to do well most of the time. Accept it. We suck cause we haven't done it enough, and even when we stop sucking, we're still gonna fail constantly.

Patrick Rothfuss needs to watch this short. For those who don't know, Rothfuss is a fantasy author who promised a trilogy and has yet to deliver the 3rd book after nearly 13 years, among other transgressions. In 2007 he was posting on his blog dunking on George RR Martin for being a slow writer, essentially saying that long gaps between books wouldn't be a problem for him because all 3 of his books were already written and would be released one per year for 3 years. He then proceeded to take 4 years on the second book (first book came out March 2007, second March 2011), and as previously mentioned THIRTEEN years on the alleged third book. I don't care to read anything he ever releases again personally, but there are a lot of fans who are still hoping for a conclusion to the story, so for their sake I hope he watches this short and farts out at least something.

The fear is more that if it sucks and someone who could open doors sees it, then to them my shit sucks, and later, when I don't suck, they won't give me the time.
@thecrispymaster2 ай бұрын
That ain't how it works, though. These door openers see gazillions of people. If you suck to start with, go away for several years to improve and then come back, I can all but guarantee that they'll have completely forgotten you in that time.
@haileybalmer97222 ай бұрын
Tell you what I learned? Not everyone who fails sucks. In fact, a lot of those door openers see people every day that they’d love to open doors for, it’s just that they can only take the people who are 98% and above. You might be a 95%, and that might not even be your fault. Maybe someone tapped into something they’re expecting to blow up, and you didn’t. The thing is, if they keep seeing you and seeing you, someone will say yes eventually. Showing up after repeated rejection shows the people in charge that you’re serious about your art.

I actually have a few videos on my channel so far and to be honest I still think they're a little rough. I especially don't like my 1st video and think it sucks but to be honest I'm picking up on certain things as I go and I am enjoying making them. Now if only my ADHD didn't exist so I can get them out faster.
