Creative Growth Art Center in Oakland, California, is the world’s first and largest nonprofit center dedicated to giving artists with disabilities the space to let their talents shine. Since 1974, the center has served hundreds of artists with developmental, mental and physical disabilities who lacked formal education in the arts. The studio helps to provide the tools, the space and the inspiration needed to grow into professional, exhibited artists. Today, artists represented by Creative Growth have been invited to the Venice Biennale, have had their works acquired by MoMA, and remain in high demand among collectors around the world.
We're thrilled to say that this story was awarded an Emmy for Outstanding Arts, Culture or Entertainment Report at the News and Documentary Emmy Awards in September 2019.

What you said is word for word of what my teacher said to me, I have terrible anger issues and I have ADHD say what you want about it I don’t care. So to the point I had to have everything so perfect if it wasn’t in my head it was art so I would get to a point of uncontrollable anger and I would begin to tear up my drawings and paintings but now I love doing art and none of my drawings are perfection but! Never give up guys! My favourite art movement is surrealism that I personally prefer to draw in, I draw my dreams

I wish I could get my son to do artwork. He's 22 has Duplication 15q syndrome and Autism but has a high IQ. He shows interest because I do a lot of art myself. I think he is afraid to try because he thinks it needs to be perfect but he has mild Cerebral Palsy that affects his hands so he has a hard time using pencils, pens, paint brushes and things like that. I told him art is not perfect it is just your own interpretation. I will keep trying with him.

@Deborah Tawadros, I'm so sorry your son is struggling right now. I can only imagine how he feels. Have you ever thought of having him. Start out by working with clay. It's soft and he can work with it. To mold it into what he likes. And that way he's exercising his hands to build strength and clay comes in different colors too. It's just an idea. God bless you and your son. 🙂

@@moonlight_5836 I kinda love that stuff because in a way that's what it's meant to be. It's ment to piss people off and show how shit the art market is. How rich people keep buying paintings without knowing the meaning, just to use the artist name or piece to brag to their other rich friends and because the rich keep spending more and more money on art, art is becoming less accessible for the more average person so artist are finding hater and garter to maintain art as a career. Also another point could be about the idea more than the actually painting. Like a canvas is meant to be painted on but not painting on it still is creative, but I do understand it's over used

I'm disabled, an ongoing movement rn is to move away from the idea that saying "disabled person" is offensive. A lot of us feel that out disabilities are very important parts of who we are bc they influence how we interact with the world and how the world interacts with us, and that to treat our disabilities as external to us is to ignore a part of us. Not everyone feels this way, but it's the most "up-to-date" notion in the community right now. This was three years ago, tho, so who knows what you're up to now lol.

true but i hate the great big story, just recently one of their journalists were caught in a scandal apparently he/she stole the rights to one of these talented artists painting, by manipulating them into signing a contract. And yup they sold their art for over 20,000$. I have the link if you guys want to read it for yourself. Truly disgusting.

Do you know anything about the world? As an art student, these supplies are expensive as fuck, and no third world country will be able to afford such a program. However, there are other ways to make art, so there might be some sort of artistic value to some poor schools that are “innovative” or trying to support their culture through art. I do think street art is better in a ton of ways, not only does it let kids express themselves, but it’s cheap and can possibly inspire the community. But other than that, art is still “dead” in some parts of the world, wether it would be dictators, gangs and limitations....there might be someone willing to sacrifice their life to make some sort of art that reflects their humanity/individuality.

Jane Doe Stay ignorant, then. I told you, I’m an art student that’s about to graduate, I’m not talking too “deep”, I’m stating the facts. I had to elaborate to the OP, since they thought the world was fit for wealth and elaborate tools. However, I bet nobody knows that in a lot of third world countries, art is used as a weapon to counter propaganda and oppression. Most of the time, art is used for pure wealth and stature in first world countries...seems like the poor will always have more substance than the materialistic society.

I was born with Aspergers Syndrome, a spot on the Autism Spectrum. I may be high functioning, but I was always expressive with my art when I can’t properly understand and interact socially with other and scared to speak how I feel. Art gave me an outlet that I love and want to continue for my life as a career, a passion! I hope other learn from this and smile knowing that though all people with disabilities have an issue, they aren’t alone, and they are just as human as the normal people who see themselves above us with disabilities and see that we can be just as contributive to the world as they can! I grew up with my mom working in the field with people with disabilities and grew up knowing an old man with Down Syndrome and he was family to me. I learned a disability is just a disconnection to a normal function of the mind or body and there are ways to work around it. I’m proud to be in this community because I learned that the true hearted people are those who have an issue that sets them apart, and those people have hearts of gold. seeing this kind of facility makes me smile ear to ear as there is so many happy people with any form of disability, mental, physical, and developmental just so happy to express in way no one could ever fully teach them before!

As a society, we often see those with significant disabilities as permanent burdens to be accounted for, needing constant attention and maintenance. Because of this, people with disabilities are often never given a chance to do anything substantial. From the very second we know they are disabled, we start regulating their lives, instituting routines and restricting their freedom in favor for a streamlined care program that gives the rest of us peace of mind. It is so easy to think "oh, they are doing fine in that home, they must be happy" while in fact these disabled persons can live a very restricted life, not only by their disabilities but by the care systems we willingly place them into for our convenience. This art studio is brilliant. Disabled people are not something to be cast away because they aren't immediately useful to society.

I see these people and I see pure expression of creativity. When I was in my visual arts diploma course I really struggled with thinking too much and felt like I was boxed in by the requirements of the projects. I struggled to look past making art that made sense, had an explanation, looked pretty and was sell-able. These people are unhindered from such pressures and ways of thinking, they simply create. My prof kept telling me, "Do not think, just make 'stuff' " and I really struggled with that. I'm not saying that there is no thinking behind what these people do, in some ways I'm sure that they think even more than us neurotypical people, but they are not being told to express themselves in a certain way, in a certain medium or a certain color. They just do. They are more of an artist then I will ever be.

People say that "modern" art sucks! I'm the artist myself and for my drawings, almost every single one of them describes my emotions, my point of view, etc. It takes hours to finish one drawing. I don't say that "hey look at us" but I wonder like what do you guys dislike about "modern" art? You can find every kind of art out there! Want portrait it's there! Want peisag it's also there. There are no good or bad drawings out there you know?

I like the art but I hate when people just put a dot on a piece of paper and charge a million dollars

If you get an elderly disabled pet you'd have three of your four loves combined. XD

Go on google, find a place and ask :D I volunteer with kids with mental disabilities at camp during school vacations and it's amazing (14+hrs work per day for 2 weeks straight is exhausting but super fun)

they don’t “make” it trending, it has to have a certain amount of views in a certain amount of time.if everyone banded together and watched, or it went viral, it could be on trending. but i totally agree.

This is why I love art. Although the artists I taught, were from ages three to five. They constantly amazed me. The hardest part was getting them to try.
