I built an 18" 6.5 Grendel for playing and for a deer/hog gun this year. We have a serious hog problem down in Louisiana and with my 270WSM and 6.5 Creedmoor bolt action rifles I normally hunt with getting more then 1 shot off at the hogs when they showed up was very hard to impossible. So far this year I'm extremely impressed with the Grendel already shot multiple hogs some over 300 lbs and they dropped dead in their tracks!!! Great video as always keepem coming brother.

Grendel is pretty fantastic in shorter barrels too. Down at 12 inches, you’re still pushing that projectile at 2200 FPS and can still do 800 ft lbs of energy somewhere between 350 and 400 yards. It really isn’t all that put off by the shorter barrel.

I spent a little over 20 years carrying an M16a1, so when I retired (US Navy Seabee) I was not interested in owning an AR15. Not because I hated the rifle, I just didn't like the 5.56 round. When the 6.5 came out I had to check it out, a great round that I have built 11 AR15s around and given as presents to my relatives for Christmas. The 6.5 got the AR back into my life and it's been fun. My relatives and I have put literally thousands of pounds of meat (mostly hogs) into the freezers over the years.

I REALLY hope 6.5 Grendel one day takes off the same way 300 AAC did. The one thing holding me back with the 6.5 is the lack of retail support, also the proprietary bolt head.
@calebsmith6202
@calebsmith6202 4 жыл бұрын
Eh, the bolt face is robust and modern Type II styles don't have the bolt sheering issues earlier Type I bolts did. More retailers are producing ammunition and quite a few are making guns, Remmington just came out with a 6.5 Grendel load. Best way to incentivize market saturation is to invest, I can't recommend a Grendel enough.

Hornady and wolf make 6.5G ammo that's all you need. Considering 6.5g drastically out performs 300hype-out (except maybe supressed shooting) I think it's worth paying a few bucks for a bolt.
@asmcinn
@asmcinn 4 жыл бұрын
Lacking retail support? What more support do you need? You can buy bargain-bin uppers or spec out your own custom build from AA for 3x the entry kit price. Plenty of barrel and BCG options are available if you want to build your own. The only "downside" is that there are only a handful commercial ammo manufacturers and price is about double per round what you pay for 223/556.

@@asmcinn That's the retail support they're likely talking about. 2 companies make ammo for it mostly... Hornady and Wolf, sure you got boutique ammo companies but that's not really readily available everywhere. 6.5 Grendel while a wonderful round just never caught on because of all the parts you had to change out on a standard AR. Lack of available ammo doesnt help either.

There are better options for much less, IMO. Look up PigSaddle, mount it on a camera ball and one of their tripods, and you have it. Best of it, is that if you are into photography, you can use the ball and tripod for long exposure photography or a stable mount for landscape photos, filming areas, or long distance nature photography (bird nests).

However it's very expensive to even produce the end materials into a sheet or block. And then manufactures can shape their products using this material.

I love my 6.5 Grendel build but as soon as i got it all my local vendors, except one, quit stocking ammo. Of course all they stocked was $25 a box or higher. Before i went with Grendel i looked at the 6.8 spc for a comparison. No one stocked the 6.8 spc ammo but they did the Grendel, so i went with the Grendel. Now it's reversed. I started looking for ammo online and it was no cheaper with shipping. I found a vendor in a neighboring town who stocked the Wolf ammo this past weekend. I just cleaned him out at $9 a box. He said he would have more in a few weeks and i told him to give me a call.

I finished up my first 6.5 Grendel AR15 build earlier this year specifically to hunt whitetail deer. I went with a 16" barrel to save a little weight and will be using a suppressor. the ^.5 Grendel is truly amazing. I can’t believe I waited so long to get on board. Now since loads are developed and the type II is here, it has become my new favorite. Hunts deer out past 250, hits steel out to 1000 yards. The list of cartridges it competes with as the yardage increases is impressive, kinda like the further it flies the better it gets. It is not a Creedmoor, but in an AR platform, it is as good as it gets with all things taken into consideration, including energy ay distances.

I’ve been playing with this caliber for five years now at least. I like it but I don’t love it. It’s really tough to get decent velocity out of the heavier bullets which are of course the ones that give you a good ballistic coefficient. I’ve used different powders and different barrels over the years. When it comes to hunting a good 223 is good for pigs and a 308 is great for deer. While many people are getting into the caliber I think I’ll be getting out of it shortly.

6.5 Grendel is demonstrably the best all-around caliber you can run in an AR15 pattern rifle (6.8SPC is _great_ within 200-250m but it's NOT a "long range" design, it was designed for CQB fighting and the Grendel is a LOT more efficient at long ranges, not just "neck and neck" or "a little better" it's a LOT better). I love 6.5 Grendel, in fact I'm taking my 16" Grendel out tomorrow for some 1000m shooting in the coming good weather here in the PNW. FWIW, I have a 12" Grendel I've taken White Tail with (last one was shot at a little over 270m) and a 16" rifle I consistently take out to 1000m on steel. Barrel length is important but the 6.5 Grendel still works REALLY well out of shorter barrels.

6.5mm, a bullet that is often forgotten throughout history, but one that when we look back on, realise that they were some of the best performing rounds compared to their piers. I honestly don't know why no country has stuck with it, even nowadays in light of it's arguably better performance. I could be wrong though, perhaps it sits in the uncanny valley of rounds where it isn't small enough to be light, but not large enough to carry energy out to further ranges, but alas, I wouldn't be one to know.

I will be getting a 6.5 Grendel bolt gun instead, Ruger just came out with a 16" Ranch. This should offset the cost of ammo as I will shoot less in the bolt gun, and get the most accuracy out of it.

After shooting a friend's AR in Grendel, my first thought was "The AR-15 has finally grown up." I stand by that, after owning one for just over two years. Grendel makes the AR a true rifle. 6-800 yards is no problem for this cartridge. I must add, Grendel likes a long barrel. 20" minimum. I built mine with an HBAR for better performance. That said, the Russian Wolf ammo (100 grain FMJ) is designed for 16" barrels. It's does better in the longer barrels, of course. The Hornady 123 HP is match grade ammo, and lethal past 800 yards. Grendel is exactly what the AR-15 platform needed. They designed the cartridge for this rifle! It's excellent!!! With 40% of the recoil of a 308! I have NO regrets about changing to Grendel.

@Eugene Stoner You keep running your mouth about something that hasn't been an issue with the 6.5 Grendel since the type 2 chamber & bolt became the predominant spec and the .264 (6.5) LBC - Les Baer Cartridge went defunct. You should really refrain from espousing what you have little (actually zero) experience in. I mean I get it. @Matteo_
@Matteo_ 4 жыл бұрын
@Eugene Stoner Geez... Did you really just parrot something I've seen out of an ARFCOM post, near-verbatim? As for militaries using the 6.5 Grendel? Eh, you might want to check that again. IIRC the Serbian military adopted it. And in terms of LE? Yeah last I heard, a few counties police forces added it for use in their special tactics units. My guess is sniping use from a smaller type platform like the Serbians. My round count? Well, I own several 6.5 Grendels. However, my current 16" is on its way to 4000 as its halfway through it's third case of the 100gn Wolf. I order by the case and typically burn through most, if not all of it when I take it out for the weekend. 😉 Okay there Mr. Behind-The-Times. Let me school you on a few things. They can and do feed reliably from 25/26 round 6.5 Grendel magazines. Not 6.8 mags relabeled as 6.5. The 6.5 Grendel has more case taper than a 5.56 therefore it requires more of a curve to the mag body. However, if the mag is, in essence, a 556 mag with the dimpling changed to accommodate the 6.5 Grendel then yes 10 to 15 rounds is generally the limit for reliable feeding. 7.62x39 bolts are not the same. The x39 and .264 LBC (Les Baer Cartridge) have a .125" bolt face depth due to the deeper chamber seating depth. They are not specified/recommended to be a 9310 bolt material. Whereas the 6.5 Grendel does and was derived using the same bolt as the 50 Beowulf or 12.7x42. (.136" bolt face depth) Also, the case taper design of the x39, in conjunction with the larger flat-base surface area of the .310" x39 bullet lends itself to higher bolt thrust. This in turn leads to higher wear and stress on the bolt lugs even though it runs at a lower pressure spec... Do 556 bolts have higher bolt life expectancies? Yes. Provided those bolts are not HP (high pressure tested) Otherwise no since HP testing simply preloads stress to induce failures earlier. A fact Colt Canada proved when they discovered the C7 & C8 had higher bolt service life than their US counterparts. But let's be clear, the divide is not as great as you are attempting to allege. Bolt issues dissipated when the recommended type 2 bolt & chamber became the predominant 6.5 G spec. JP & AA bolts enjoy a solid service life. Other manufacturers bolts are seeing really good service life. Provided the material is of quality and heat treatments are correct. Even issues with extractors have been seldom until recently, with some batches of extractors. Although like any bolt design, the extractor in an autoloader is going to be subject to metallurgy and heat treatment. Regardless of the cartridge, it's chambered for. You either get it right, or you don't. When it's wrong, then 5.56 & 7.62 NATO, along with any other cartridge will see failures. 6.5 Grendel actually had full auto testing as a standard with Alexander Arms at one time, not that Marines and soldiers are taught to use full-auto fire from their service rifles. You get a clear idea of what type of moron you're dealing with when they start talking about full-auto fire from their service carbines and rifles. But nice attempt at moving the goalpost in a discussion centered around civilian AR's, ie semiautos. Oh and FYI there bucko I'm a Marine vet. Combat Engineers. 😉 Much like I carry a spare bolt and a backup BCG for my 556 AR's for a class or just simply some range time. I do the same thing with my 6.5. Why? Because regardless of the chambering. A weak point in the AR bolt design is the cam pinhole. I don't have the logistics that Uncle Sam once afforded me so I come prepared should Murphy come a calling. Do everyone a favor bud. Stay off of the decade-old ARFCOM info. And get a f'ing clue as to what you are talking about before running your suck, hmm?

Ostrich 21 can’t go wrong with a 30.06 deer hunting either but when it comes to deer hunting with an AR-15 the list starts with 6.5 Grendel and ends with 6.5 Grendel if you ask me. 6.8spc isn’t bad either but the Grendel in my opinion is just a little better in every category the big bore calibers are good too if you don’t care about any kind of long range capabilities. I have a ks47 just an AR-15 made by psa chambered in 7.62x39 and takes ak mags and my son uses it for deer hunting. But since the 7.62x39 shares the same case as the Grendel it should feed from an ak mag also and I’m really thinking about swapping out his barrel and bolt to 6.5 Grendel for this year.

I just stumbled on this video an immediately felt the need to comment. Years ago I built a Grendel to hunt deer with after buying into much of the hype around the Grendel. I built a 24” barrel gun to get maximum performance. Accuracy was outstanding! But my first deer was my last with the Grendel. The inability to penetrate the base of a doe’s neck at 150 yards is unacceptable. Why? I’ve hunting deer with numerous rounds from 223 to 7 mag and I have never had failure to penetrate! Even with a 223 with a 55 grain Varmint bullet, my only deer with that round and it completely pasted though. I subsequently moved to a 300 Hamr which doesn’t have the range of the Grendel but it has superior terminal effect within it’s applicable range.

Personally i think the king ar intermediate cartridge is the 6.5-223 sadly tou have to make it yourself most times but boys a good round. 75 to 110grain 6.5 slug in a 223 case. Lets you sling a 100grain slug at like 2700fps with a 13inch barrel it performs exceptionally well in short barrels and in a 16inch your doing around 2800 to 2900fps which is mighty impressive. On top of the little bit of extra power the bc of that 6.5 is also going to give you a little more range and its still traveling at speeds comporable to a 223 with similar recoil plus all 223 mags and ar hardware works with it all you need is a barrel swap. You can accurate sling led out to 750yards or more with a 16inch all day long. Its what the military should of invested in instead of 6.8 m7. All they would need is barrel swaps for m4 m16s and saw machine guns no bolt swap nothing else which is also alot cheaper plus it doesent weigh any more than 556 and it doesent decrease ammo cap and you dont have to teach soldiers a new system. It also would of been easier cheaper and faster for ammo producers to make the rounds since 90% of the tooling and stuff is the same to make andload 223 or 556 cases accept you neck it up and put a 6.5slug and a pinch more powder at the end.

I have an 18” 6.5G & I’m presently assembling a 13.9” 6.5 Grendel(Pin/Weld) from SOLGW. I agree with Tim on the trigger. The SD-C for has a stiffer & more tactile reset, with a more defined second stage that is a hair heavier than the SD-E by .8-1.2lbs +/- a few tenths and I’ve found myself using either the SD-C in all my rifles or just using a basic BCM PNT nickel Teflon coated Mil/Spec style trigger are the two options I lean towards these days, preference wise. Every other trigger besides those two are simply MEH for my tastes. I want the 13.9” 6.5G to have a lw Mini DMR that is short enough w/ Samdman k can to handle maneuvering in tight spaces while at same time it offers the ability to still reach out to moderate-long distances(400-750yards) while still delivering good energy one it gets there. Given 300-350yards is around 1000ft lbs of energy & 700-750 yards is right at or just below 500ft lbs of energy. Where as my 13.7” 5.56 only has a couple hundred ft lbs of energy at 500 yards making it a realistic 0-300 yard rifle with occasional ability to lob in rounds at 300-500 with minimal energy transfers left using the 13.7” 5.56 platform. Thus by selecting the 13.9” 6.5G it has all of the benefits of the 13.7” 5.56 without any of the draw backs allowing it to still have plenty of energy left at ranges out to 750 yards. This will be handy for a compact hunting rifle as well as if the need should ever arise to hunt anything of the two legged tyrant variety, it’s a solid choice for paper, steel of defending life, liberty & the pursuit of happiness.

The 6.5 has a higher ballistic coefficient but is actually less aerodynamic. (: The ballistic coefficient is the mass of the projectile combined with its fluid dynamics. These things combined allow you to determine the efficiency of a bullet. The ratio of mass and fluid dynamics is what makes the 6.5 bullet more efficient. That is because the extra mass of the 6.5 bullet more than make up for its lack of fluid dynamics. For example if you took 150 grain .223 projectile and a 150 grain 6.5 Creedmoor projectile, assuming they have the same basic shape just a difference in diameter the .223 is going to have a significantly high ballistic coefficient. I suspect you already know all this but at 8:00 minutes you offer an explanation to why the .223 is losing velocity faster than the 6.5 bullet. You say it is due to the reduced ballistic coefficient which is correct but then you say less aerodynamic which is incorrect. The ratio of mass of in the .223 is why it is losing when compared to the 6.5 not the aerodynamics. Again you probably already understand this but many of your viewers might not. Another great video and you are spot on with everything else. Have a nice day.

This cartridge will be dead and forgot by the masses in less than 5 years. Only small niche circles will still even know what it is. The 6.5 Grendel will always remain superior.

Gs Xr - Not to sound conceited, but you don’t have a clue who I am, and that’s cool, but trust me, I know EXPONENTIALLY more about cartridges, cartridge design, and ballistics than your average guy. You’re not gonna fool me. And you’re incredibly wrong about the greater MV leading to greater downrange velocity, because there about a dozen different factors that play into that factor, not just your MV. You obviously have zero clue about what you’re talking about. It’s 100% obvious now. So, please, go spread your misinterpreted fanboy regurgitations somewhere else. 👍🏻 Your posts remind me of that old saying... “If you can’t dazzle them with brilliance...Baffle them with bullshit...”
@TroyPosey
@TroyPosey 4 жыл бұрын
Gs Xr - You forgot to include bullet weight into that calculation... Something every 6mm naturally lacks compared to the .257 & 6.5mm projectiles. Therefore just because of the slightly higher velocity & roughly comparable BC, does not mean the cartridge can compete at longer ranges beyond the 6.5 Grendel. 👍🏻

I have a couple of 6.5 Grendel's. I built them to give my grandson a little more range than the 300 Black Out I was letting him deer hunt with. His shots were getting longer, and I wanted to give him a better point-blank range. Great little cartridge. I reload all the calibers I have. I would never shoot that cheap Wolf steel cased ammo in anything I own. Brass cases will never damage anything not so with steel. You can reload brass and reload them with good bullets that will outshoot that cheap Wolf stuff at less the price than the wolf ammo with the brass cases once you have them. Having said that my grandson has moved up to higher powered bolt guns for hunting now. I would not use a 6.5 Grendel when hunting for large bucks. Easy on a bad shoulder but you really need great shot placement on the larger bucks.

You know what you're talking about. Best external ballistics from an AR-15 and powerful enough yet manageable (a definite step above 5.56mm). Best do-anything gun? Double the range of your AR-15 without majorly impacting close-range performance. Since manufacturers of 7.62x39 can cheaply produce Grendel ammo, if it caught on we'd have cheap 6mm Grendel. The cartridge would be very versatile. Take it to a class and clear rooms with cheap inaccurate ammo, then switch to better ammo and go long outdoors. And you could easily hunt smaller deer with it, similar to .243 Winchester.

@@gsxr1189 Sorry that is incorrect. A DMR can be with an intermediate round. And considering the DMR that was being fielded when I was in was a 556 using the 77gn. Also, that bit about the 6.5 Grendel not having military adoption is incorrect as well. It was adopted a few years back.

@450/400 Man Our military looked at it several years ago for that purpose. It was passed over because at that time the military did not like the proprietary steel required of the bolt to ensure their specification for round count life. That said the Serbian military did adopt it for that role about 3 or 4 years ago. And are in the process of adopting it for widespread/general purpose usage. IIRC their new 6.5 Grendel service rifle (AK variant) is the M17. Which is why there is an affordable steel case option available through Wolf and Barnaul. And why there is a growing interest in 6.5 Grendel AK's

I own 5.56, .300 Blk, .450 BM, 25-45 Sharps, and .350 Legend. My favorite Ar-15 chambering is the 6.5 Grendel. Everything for home defense, long range shooting, and hunting. It's an absolute winner. It hits hard and is silly accurate, (I've shoot my 18" out to 800m so for.). It also helps that a bulk can of Hornady American Gunner 123 gr cost about the same as American Gunner .223 55 gr. There's nothing it really can't do.

If you reload you can increase velocity over the 6.8 factory rounds. The 6.8 barrels that have 6 grooves and lands do not have the correct bore area per SAAMI spec so make sure you buy a 5R, 4 groove or 3R barrel that allows you to reload to higher performance levels. You can reload to get 2700fps out of 110gr bullets and a 16" barrel, the 120s can hit 2600 out of a 16" barrel. H335 powder. A Grendel shoots 123s out of a 16" at apx 2400fps, the 6.8 can beat that by apx 200fps.

Because a heavy 77/80 gr 223 bullet is better than a 123g Grendel. The 80g will have much less drop and less wind shift. The advantage the 6.5g has at 1000 yards is 401 vs 327ft lbs of energy.

Great VDO as always - Great hunting cartridge. But, I opted for a PWS MK116 MOD 2-M -Caliber: 7.62x39 Gas Piston. I also stripped all the military junk off a ghost SKS and have its weight down to 7.7 (no ammo). I'm not knockin' this VDO - simply providing other alternatives to hunting with military rifles both old and newer. As you can attest, I few years ago I could have said the SKS was an economical hunting alternative but for what they cost today, probably better to stick with an AR-15 platform.

The 6.5 Grendel is the first new cartridge on the market that has prompted me to build an AR in a different caliber than 5.56. I just finished building my 6.5 Grendel AR15 and only lack my scope mounts (on order) before I can take it out and see what it will do. It looks much the same as the one you feature in your video including the suppressor. I started this project a few months back with the intention of shopping the various online sales to see if I could build a quality rifle on a budget and it came in at just under a grand, less optic and suppressor.

It sucked to be laid up for so long, but was worth it in the long run because afterwards my shoulders were completely healed and about as good as new (after rehab, of course). The trick is finding a skilled surgeon who will do a good job. Fortunately for me, my wife is a Workman’s Compensation executive, who know all the good surgeons in our area. The last one I used worked on several professional athletes in my area, which told me all I needed to know about his skill. If you can manage to shoot videos ahead to save some for your recovery time, that would keep you visible to your audience. Good luck.
