Papa Jo was easily the best "showman" drummer back in the day. He knew how to get a crowd's attention during a drum solo just by being tasteful. A true master of speed and dynamics.

Speed, dynamics and volume control. Papa Jo could draw you in, like he was whispering a secret to you. He always leaves me wanting more. I would much rather watch a master like him, Joe Morello or Gene Krupa, than a drummer who just attacks, like Buddy Rich.

Bought my first kit at Frank's in 1975. Slingerland kit with Paiste cymbals. Only had $400 cash on me. They trusted ne for the remaining $100. The hi-hats, coincidentally, were Paiste Formula 602 Sound Edge hats, which I still use to this day. Hanging out with Jo at his crib on East 64th street, I got to check out his hats, which were old A. Zildjians, a thin 13" Top and a Paperthin bottom, maybe 12-3/4", anyway, slightly smaller than the top cymbal. Felt blessed that my first hi-hats, also fairly light, were very much in a Jo Jones mode...Jo used to say, "I was never a player, I was always a listener, and look who I got to listen to." As such, my limitations being manifest, I always aspired to be a good listener on the drum kit.

WOW,......a very creative, and very subtle solo. A thinking solo. Unlike much of the bombast you hear today with an excess of drums and cymbals. One ride cymbal and a high hat, a snare and 3 toms. Adult and class all the way. Thank you Papa Jo.

Amazing. Papa had extreme skills, but what a demonstration of not needing to cram as many notes as possible into each measure. Quality, not quantity. And with only a single cymbal and hi-hat. Can't imagine that Papa would ever lower himself to getting a reaction from an audience by playing a double pedal bass drum roll.
