Norfolk Southern's SD70ACU locomotive began life as ex-Union Pacific SD90MACs in 2015.. See them in action before and after their transformation from yellow to black.. Plus ex-CIT, A&O and Indiana RR.

I was just digging up some 2012 train photos on my Mac and I came across a “strange” (to me & my area) red & black engine, a CN no.8825. I had to google to ID “CN”. Thank you for posting this. Although I am not a fan of intermodal nor auto trains, I do enjoy watching mixed freight, gondolas, flat cars, box cars, tank cars, pulpwood cars, and all forms of hoppers, cylindrical, covered and open. I appreciate the train you shot near the first of the video since I was able to count the cars the two SD-90's were pulling. Yes, I'm a car counter as I like to see how many cars a certain engine or consist can pull. Although I'm not very familiar with the modern diesel electrics I do like to see how most cars on freight trains are weathered. This gives me an idea how to weather my model railroad freight cars. Thanks for shooting the whole train of 125 cars. The only diesels I am familiar with are EMD GP-7's and 9's, most of the Alco RS series of engines and of course steam engines. I didn't know that Winchester Western had their own hoppers until I viewed this video. Also I'm not a fan of graffiti painted on the cars. I model a time period before graffiti became popular. What happened to the railroad police in the yards? The latest models of engines I run on my layout are EMD GP-38's with low hoods. My model railroad currently is limited up to the late 1950's. Thanks for a great HD video! W Rusty Lane in eastern Tennessee (Witherington Place Railroad)

Not a fan of intermodal,or auto rack trains,either,..I like the mixed/manifest trains,and also the grain trains,though! I'm modeling 2011 to present on my 4x8 Ho scale model railroad,..although I do have older vintage buildings on my layout along with a modern grain elevator. I have an SD40-2 "Admiral Cab" locomotive ordered,along with a GE ES44AC. My other EMD locomotive is the NS "Erie Heritage" unit. Most of my trains on my layout will be grain trains since I am modeling the grain industry.
@Fullsenddiesel4 жыл бұрын
I don't see that stuff, I only see manifest trains because it's a Shortline Railroad. The Railroad name is St Lawrence and Atlantic Railroad, for short is SLR, good Shortline Railroad and I don't see derailment, only 2 derailment from around 1990's and one in 2009 in Maine. SLR is part of the Genesee Wyoming family.

In 2009-2012 I shot a lot of UP video on the Golden State Route in southwest Kansas. I liked catching the SD9043s because they were unusual. I knew the day would come when UP phased them out. So why did NS get so attached to the SD80/90's? Especially when UP couldn't wait to get rid of them. Is it something about the performance characteristics in the eastern mountains that just didn't apply out west? Possibly performance on the long flat stretches?
@cody82172 жыл бұрын
No one I know likes how the SD70's pull in the mountains. I've had a few and they don't pull very well and their dynamic brakes are too strong. Makes for a rough ride. They are loud too. No one wants to listen to all that noise for 12 hours. Makes it hard to hear the radio, too.
@Slim_Slid2 жыл бұрын
The SD80MAC's were all owned and only by Conrail,then Norfolk Southern had them on their roster after the merge.CSX got some of them as well but then gave them later on to Norfolk Southern for trades of SD40-2's they wanted. The SD80MAC's were becoming expensive to maintain not just because of their 20-710 G3B EC's but also EMD is more costly than alot of GE rebuilds.Their age wasn't just the obvious factor. Norfolk Southern sold their SD80MAC's to PRLX.Some of them were acquired by Canadian Pacific as parts donors for their SD9043MAC's and SD70ACU rebuilds. The SD90MAC's,both H1 & H2,with Union Pacific were a problem to begin with.EMD was in such a rush because of competing with GE after the AC6000CW's were manufactured.The 265H prime motors had horrible reliability and were not designed very well.Keep in mind that the SD9043MAC'a were already around before the 265H officially was debuted. The SD9043MAC's remained until tears in the frame happened but most of the 6,000 HP SD90MAC's were scrapped while some survived as rebuilt exports. Alot of the SD9043MAC's that Union Pacific had in storage were purchased by Norfolk Southern for the SD70ACU rebuild program.Half of them soon after were sold to PRLX and some SD9043MAC's still remain in storage.CEFX still has tons of their SD9043MAC's that only see usage if on leases.Some of them were also purchased for SD70ACU rebuilds as well.

@Slim_Slid6 ай бұрын
Norfolk Southern never had plans to rebuild the SD80MAC's,that was a false rumour itself.They just wanted to retire them once they became old enough because of costs and stricter EPA regulations. The SD80MAC's with the most hours and miles that were sold to PRLX were deemed as scrap value while the units that had lesser usage have been used as parts donors only.Canadian Pacific purchased six SD80MAC's as parts donors as well for thirty of their SD9043MAC's that have been rebuilt as SD70ACU's.On top of this,the SD70ACU's that Norfolk Southern sold to PRLX back then are finally getting scrapped.

Curious question, do the SD70ACU's have DPU capability, or are they like the SD70M's and lack it? For the record, DPU capability is being able to lead a train and have DPU's on the rear, or to be a sole DPU.

Trains21 This is especially true for Canadian Pacific. They followed in the footsteps of NS and had 30 of their SD9043MACs’, of which most had been in storage for years, rebuilt into ACUs. The 9043MACs’ were numbered 9100-9160 respectively, and the 30 ACUs’ built are numbered 7000-7030. The irony behind it is that the rebuilt SD70ACU’s look identical to the 4 SD90MAC-HIIs’ that CP had purchased in the late 90s’ and were numbered 9300-9303 respectively. I call it ironic because the SD90MAC-HIIs’ were extremely unreliable, and spend more time in the shop than on the road. In fact, the original order was for 20, but CP cut it down to 4 after hearing about the issues Union Pacific was having with the phase IIs. They were put into service in 1999 and didn’t even last ten years. I believe all four were removed from CP’s roster by 2008. I’m not sure where they are now but I do know 9300 was cut up in 2015.

@@aydinparker1620 Norfolk Southern never officially purchased any SD70AH-T4's.The orders were canceled at the last minute.NS,BNSF,& KCS had them on leases but never did any purchases,only UPRR and CSX actually did.Union Pacific is the only railroad with 100 of their SD70AH-T4's because CSX finally sold off the 10 units they owned back to PRLX.The SD70AH-T4's ironically were junk just like the SD90MAC's that they were soley based on.All of the PRLX SD70AH-T4's currently are being leased in Mexico to Ferromex.

Norfolk Southern actually sold 65 SD70ACU's to PRLX.Also,they are finally getting scrapped by PRLX. There is only 45 of them still around on the roster and at that,27 of them are on 24/7 freight service.Being that all 110 units were Union Pacific SD9043MAC's, most of them already have wear and tear in the frames and that's why they were sold dirt cheap in the first place.A few of these units also came from CEFX but those are now apart of the scrap fleet.

Are the ACUs still around on PRLX property or awaiting to be dismantled?@@Slim_Slid
