Very similar story!!! My best friends family also got a DVD player back around 1999, and it came with a few DVDs in a bundle. Gladiator was in there as well. The movie plays loosely with historical figures. Commodus and Lucilla were real people, and Commodus did become Emperor after his fathers death. Commodus fought regularly in the arena with other gladiators as well as wild animals, but his opponents often just submitted because they didn't want to fight the Emperor. Commodus died in 192AD. After his mistress tried to poison him with wine in a bath, and failed, a wrestler named Narcissus strangled Commodus to death.

Excellent to see Mish & Viki's appreciation, in their own way, of this classic. Interesting that Viki's first wish was to see it all again, afterwards; I really hope they do. A definition of "classic" is to be able to see/hear the same piece, over & over repeatedly and find something fresh in it each time. You can do that with this film. Hardly surprising that Mish suspected the oh-so realistic Colosseum interior scenes might have been filmed at the place itself (it seems so convincingly like the real Colosseum); but they were actually done in Malta, augmented by CGI work.

40:47 Since we don't know the timing of Maximus's relationship with Lucilla, I did wonder if Lucius might be Maximus's child, but in the end I decided he couldn't be. Lucius is the same age as Maximus's wife's son, so the boys must have been conceived around the same time. However, Maximus loves his wife so much -- and he is so honorable -- that it's highly unlikely he would have ever betrayed her. Therefore Lucius's father must be a different man.
@fettfan91

Lucius also mentions that he was named after his father, more proof it was a different dude.
@bigdream_dreambig

Lucius Verus was the younger step brother of Marcus Aurelius. When he and Lucilla were married Lucius was around 26 while Lucilla was 14. Even though the movie takes some liberties with the historical accuracy we can guess that Maximus and Lucilla might have had a teenage romance before she was married.
@fettfan91

@@bigdream_dreambig to be fair the whole dynamic is pretty ambiguous, all we know is that Max and Lucy were intimate at some point. I suppose theoretically Lucius could be his I just never thought so.
@TheRealRealMClovin
@TheRealRealMClovin 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah Lucius mentions the father being named as him Lucius Verus. Also the real Lucius Verus was the Emperor before Marcus Aurelius, was married to Aurelius daughter who is Lucilia like in the movie, this is real history. So yeah we can confirm that father was real as She was married to the previous emperor named like the son. But despite that the son and Maximus characters are made up, while Maximus is based on Narcissus, the gladiator who actually killed the Emperor. Beside that we know they were intimate before, but it's unlikely they both were cheating as their sons are the same age while Maximus being also an honorble person who holds promises and truly loves his wife.

Really good movie one of my favorites, Ridley scott did a damn good job. Jacquin Phoenix did a really good job as the antagonist/emperor, so good as when i was a young and watched this the first time i was terrified by him and is one of the most memorable villains for me, the ending too got me hard. The even more terrying thing is that Emperor Commodus was like this or maybe even worse than how he is depicted in this movie.

32.03 - FYI - there was no 'thumbs up' in gladiatorial contests - 'thumbs down' meant spare your opponent by planting your weapon in the sand. 'Thumb sideways' meant 'cut his throat'. Most gladiators fought with the same weapon used by the legions - the Roman gladius - hence the term 'gladiator' - meaning 'man with sword'. Also , fights to the death were rare , not only were slaves expensive - but training them for the arena made them far more expensive. Owners of gladiators wanted to fight them for as long as possible to recoup that large investment. There were also female gladiators - that generally fought topless or nude with hardly any armor to get the mostly male audience worked up. Lastly there were 'classes' of gladiators specifically created to face off against one another - this explains the odd pairings - the opponents were created to have strengths and weaknesses against one another so that fights would be pretty fair and the more skilled and strong-willed would prevail.......the Romans expected this and were not to be disappointed. While "Gladiator" is a strong entertaining film - it is chock full of historical inaccuracies.

Believe it or not, Ridley Scott & Russell Crowe "winged-it" almost throughout the entire filming WITH-OUT a screenplay/script; Crowe was inspired by the writings of Marcus Aurilius (who as Roman Emperor DID kill Christian Martyrs). The entire movie was based on the film "The Decline of The Roman Empire?" w/ Alec Guiness as Marcus Aurilius. Oliver Reed passed away while still filming so the last scene is him with his back towards the camera. Russell Crowe honestly thought he would not win anything considering he intentionally became fat for "The Insider" prior to "Gladiator" so Crowe looking shocked/surprised asking other people involved with the film to make sure he had actually won an Oscar is priceless to see.

Actually, the Romans had no experience in fighting in the forest. It was quite difficult for them to get organized besides losing their enemies' sight. While the Marcomannic wars were still on; the Romans decided to cut down as many trees as possible to allow legionaries to be formed easily as well as to operate their war machinery more effectively. The main purpose of these was to make the enemies come out of the forest in order to have such a better view to attack them.

Both movies have a lot of similarities but while the classic is focused more in a political way this one is based more in a personal way. @@rollotomassi6232 but remember, the only stuff we have on Caligula came much after, and from a political advisory, so while it’s sensational, take it with a grain of salt. I’ll check it out, though.

Some random suggestions for you to check, pretty sure you'd like them: - Pirates of the Caribbean - Titanic - Spartacus (the Netflix show of 2010) - Avatar - Interstellar - About Time - Edge of Tomorrow - Good Will Hunting - The Shawshank Redemption - Back to the Future - Knives Out

If Gladiator fights would be broadcasted nowadays, there would be no Super Bowl, Olympic games or whatever that would have even remotely as much spectators as this event.

People say Darth Vader is the greatest villain of all time? Oh no way. Who the hell can generate more anger for a person than Commodus? Joaquin killed this role.

The thumb thing in this movie is actually backwards. Thumbs down meant to keep their sword sheathed and thumbs up meant to draw your sword aka execute.

The Romans did enjoy theatre actually. The amphitheatre was a key part of any Roman settlement and their social life, where they would visit to watch plays and socialise.

You girls should get down on the show Spartacus Blood and Sand. There are 4 seasons and it’s one of the best shows ever made. Every episode is like a finale. First season is like 12 episodes, second is 6 episodes and seasons three and four are 10 episodes each. It’s based on history which makes it cool. The storyline is incredible as well as the villains. If you liked this, 300 and Troy... you’ll like that. It’s like those mixed with the Notebook 😂

Pretty high praise and treatment from the Emperor as well considering Maximus was not Roman. He was a Spanish Auxiliary. Rome at that time in history didn't have their own Roman Calvary but used calvary from their Provinces. Marcus makes it a point to Maximus that he had never been to Rome.

Maximus' wife was played by Giannina Facio, the wife of the director Ridley Scott. She was also the small but important part of the muslim king's sister in the director's epic "Kingdom of Heaven". The song is a fictional language kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q5iYoNVil9SVeJs.html Everyone in this was perfect. I always like Derek Jacobi, and Connie Neilsen. Joaquin Phoenix is excellent, and he makes it so easy to thoroughly despise him in this.

Latin: Ave atque vale. Morituri te salutimus. English: Hale and farewell. We who are about to die salute you. Edit: There used to be a species of European leopard that was made extinct by the Roman games. The Colosseum could be flooded for an exhibition of mock naval combat. Similar to how sports arena's now can have ice for hockey when needed. "Bread and Circuses" is the term for the combination of public entertainment spectacles and food assistance that Rome used to calm restive populations.
