Fun Fact: Commodus in actual history would often dress as Hercules and walk around cosplaying the hero... and he actually did fight in the gladiatorial arena. Fun fact in addtion to Rick's: Commodus and Marcus Aurelius were real people, maximus definitely was not. Marcus Aurelius is known as the Philosopher King, he was a wise ruler that spent his life in the borders of rome fighting German Barbarians. but he never wanted at any point in time, to give power back to the senate (honestly the senate was usually a bunch of corrupt old men that wanted the power remain with the Aristocracy and not the people) When Marcus Died (commodus didn't kill him), Commodus basically spent his entire rule not doing what the last 5 emperors before him (who were widely regarded as the best Roman Emperors) did. He spent it spending the Roman treasury for bread and circuses to make the people happy, he spent so much that he was bankrupting the Roman Treasury. he also spent his days in the arena, but there was no danger, he mostly fought animals that absolutely had little to no chance of escaping or harming him. he killed hippos, giraffes, Ostriches, and all sorts of exotic animals. eventually he was assassinated. and thus the Pax Romana (The Peace inside the borders of the Empire) came to an end. and Rome just steadily went into decline after, it would never reach the same heights that it did during the period of the 5 Good Emperors.

Winner of 5 Oscars including Best Picture. Before Russell Crowe was cast to play Maximus, Hugh Jackman, Tom Cruise, Tom Sizemore, Mel Gibson and Antonio Banderas were considered for the role. The opening scene was filmed in Surrey England, the gladiator training school was filmed in Morocco and the scenes involving Ancient Rome were filmed in Malta for 19 weeks. Oliver Reed, who played Proximo, died of a heart attack on May 2, 1999. It was dedicated in his memory. Russell Crowe sustained several injuries during filming and almost died as a direct result. The scene where Maximus was fighting Tigris Of Gaul, the tiger almost killed Russell Crowe, but thankfully, he walked away with incident.

Some decent offroad biking, not super gnarly, not boring flatness, but quite a place for Mountain Bikes, Motorbike offroading and horseriding. Some of the soldiers were hires from gyms and so forth, but unbeknownst to us, disguised as an audition for some dating drama thingy, so I missed out on being a soldier. Rick mentioned that he likes Roman history. Just curious is you guys have seen HBO's series Rome. Its the story of Caesar and Augustus and is an absolute recommendation. It was basicaly what eventually inspired HBO to make Game of Thrones. Tonnes of actors from HBO Rome also played a role in GoT, like Ciaran Hinds, Tovias Mekenzie and Indira Varma. Plus one of the main roles is played by Ray Stevenson, i mean, c'mon any better?

Fun fact... The Germanic Chant prior to the battle in the Forest is the same one used in the film ZULU.. Zulu was one of Ridley Scotts favourite films so he wanted to pay tribute to it by using the Zulu chant as that for the Germanic tribe ..

They had to use the track from Zulu because the language being used by the extras was to say the least was getting a bit adult with all the excitement.

Talking about the accidental cast members, there's a shot in the war sections at the start where Maximus is interacting with his horse, holding the reins and stroking it etc, and like dead centre shot there's a crew member in jeans trying to hide behind the horse's head because he's got trapped in the middle of the frame 😂 I liked the reference to the 2010 Robin Hood that Calvin made at the start of the reaction. It's certainly no Gladiator, but I like the film for whatever reason as an easy-watcher. I'd enjoy that being in the rotation for reactions if the others/Aaron haven't seen it.

not sure, would have to watch the behind the scenes commentary again but I think the horse Russel Crowe rides in Robin is the same as the one he rides in the battle scene. Could be real as horses live for approx. 30 years and only 10 years passed between the two movies.

Commodus shows from the start just how painfully stupid he is. While it might be selfishly justifiable to want Maximus dead, it would've been far more beneficial to his position to have Maximus taken out and killed, then claim he was assassinated and martyr him for Commodus' own gain. Say some savage that survived the battle, got him as he was walking the grounds of the camp. Then, praise him, make him the hero his troops believe he was, give his family special status, and use his name as a rallying cry to bolster support for his claim to the throne. As it is, had Quintus agreed that Maximus' family would be well-cared for, even given special status (at Commodus' order), he probably would've gone off to his death with no resistance. Commodus CREATED the problem by giving him something to fight for. Had they just promised (and kept the promise) to care for his family and elevate them, he might've just let himself die for their gain. Like killing yourself for the life insurance to help your family. Commodus was just an idiot. He was kind of terrifying, and extraordinarily dangerous...but very very stupid.

I loved this movie when I first saw it. Like Rick, I know some history about the movie and the historical inaccuracy. I'm a history buff and I found out later about it how, Commodus is based on an emperor but not real. That gladiators didn't really fight to the death. They usually fought animals or each other but rarely died. And what people don't really notice, is that there were a few female gladiators though they were rare. But despite all the inaccuracies, I still give high praise to this movie, it's so iconic.

Top ten of my favourite movies. My #1 favourite soundtrack. Too short on time to go through all these comments and see if someone said this: the slow mo in the first battle that you didn’t like was an on-the-fly practical fix. They didn’t schedule enough time to shoot the battle, and the sun was going down. Rather than spend the time and extensive money to redress the scene, reset everything, pay actors for another days’ work, and fall behind schedule, they shot it with the different shutter speed to match the lighting of earlier in the day. I don’t find it distracting at all. I find it dramatic, and when I found out why they did it was impressed with the ingenuity of fixing a very costly error with almost no time to think.
