Gladiator 'Wolf' (real name Michael Van Wijk) was a villainous character who routinely displayed poor sportsmanship in all 8 series of the original and two revival series of UK sports gameshow 'Gladiators', and he was Referee John Anderson's nemesis, similar to a heel in professional wrestling.
Producers refused to allow Van Wijk to be mean as a Gladiator, but he soon persuaded them to let him try it. This distinctive persona led him to be the most popular Gladiator in the history of the show, although he courted controversy with some people at times.
This video shows more best moments of Wolf's time on the show including loads of fights, excuses, insults and even a few Yellow and Red Card offences thrown in for good measure!

You’re Absolutely Welcome, Thank You So So Much for unbelievably managing to even watch both of them back to back, well, that’s the whole reason on why I made those videos in the first place, Michael Van Wijk (Wolf’s Real Life Name) was indeed quite the showman on this programme and he proved regardless of his age at the time around his 40s as the oldest person to be as a ‘Gladiator’ on how much of his alter-ego character would have a MASSIVE impact on the astonishing success of this show for over 8 incredible years and I also wanted to celebrate the 25 Year Anniversary of the Original UK Series from back in 2018! YOU ARE A STAR! 😃🤩⭐️🌟

I remember getting chills and goosebumps seeing Wolf again. I saw the ads for the revival and thought, damn, all my favourites are old now, probably retired......and then the legendary Wolf appears. Loved the interactions between him and John Anderson. It was fantastic and I based my heel wrestling persona on Wolf. He is a genuine legend and deserves top spot in the Gladiators Hall of Fame. (Reckon John Anderson would induct him?)

NO CHANCE! 🤣🤣🤣 Mark Clattenburg, professional English football referee has been chosen for the BBC revival series, personally, I would’ve chosen Nigel Owens, former Welsh professional Rugby Union referee, he would deal with any dissent or confrontation between Contenders and Gladiators in an instant!

Well, it’s funny you mentioned that because Michael Van Wijk (the Original and Sky One Revival Wolf’s real name) did say in a interview once a few years back to consider returning to do the show again but this time, like in the Sky One Revival series, as a Team Coach for the Gladiators, there’s been loads and loads of rumours going around at the moment for the show to return to celebrate it’s ‘30th Anniversary’ later on this year in October, but they are keeping it a Top Secret! I love this show, but without a doubt, without ‘Wolf’, the show wouldn’t have lasted as long as it did without him!

Warrior used to train at my gym, he was a scary dude. He'd squat 200kg+ most days. But jesus he made some noise about it. Hilarious watching people almost falling off treadmills trying to see what was going on. He was actually a super nice guy once I had enough balls to speak to him.

Bringing him back for the revival was a good idea badly executed, it didn't seem to occur to them that apart from the legends episodes there wasn't any protagonist for Wolf to be Antagonist to. He can't really antagonise the contestants when he's not playing the games, he can't antagonise the referee without an initial 'incident'. What they should have done is made Trojan a contender coach, then Wolf can boss the gladiators, Trojan could champion the contestants and then Wolf would have had someone to play off. As it is it comes across forced and stilted which is a shame.

Whilst you can't beat the original series I still loved the revival series from 08/09 especially the legends specials pitting the new breed against the originals. Wolf is my favourite of the legends and oblivion of the new breed.

He does however IMO put me in the mind of the legendary comedy actor/performer Norman Wisdom because of his sometimes goofy personality, he was an amazing addition to the show and quite funny when paired with Wolf occasionally on specific events! 31 Years On, they’re still great friends outside of Gladiators and most importantly, great sportsmen too! 😉😊
