@MattAlexan The place was a well known cesspool. By the last decade of its existence it was underfunded, outdated, dirty, dilapidated and with some of the worst conditions of any zoo in the developed world. Numerous health and safety regulations were breached and most of the animals suffered from stress and boredom. You may have fond memories there as a kid but in reality shutting it down was the only humane option for those poor animals.

Glasgow zoo was such a depressing place. Last time I visited was 1991 and it was dire. The whole place was run down. The animals barely made a sound. The Glasgow zoo was basically a compound to hold depressed looking animals. Anyone remember the reptile house!!!!

As a child of the 1970s I lived very close to this zoo, I could sneak in through the fox,s exhibit……..I knew this place like the back of my hand, back then I didn’t understand what the odd animal behaviour was, but now I do, I thought the animals were dancing, the single polar bear stood and swung its head left to right all day every day, the lone elephant chained by leg with a four foot chain stood and swayed its head, the lions that never moved, the leopard that wore out a path in the grass from constantly walking round and round its enclosure…all the animals in this place were stressed and bored. I remember the zoo invested in a bear enclosure and got awards for it (not long before the zoo closed) but this place was a very sad place and continued to decline, it was persistently broken into and the lizard enclosure had many animals stolen…it was however a prime land site and I’m sure property developers were desperate to get it, I wonder what’s happened to it now, it totally put me off zoos for life, those poor animals.

I used to live near the zoo. It was great when I was a kid! It's a real shame it is no longer there...

Scottish SPCA: "The Society Inspectors have visited the zoo on several occasions to check on he status of the animals, and although various buildings are in obvious disrepair due to finances, the inspectors have always been satisfied with the welfare of the animals. The Society has also been impressed with the commitment of the staff at the zoo, who continue to work tirelessly to care for the animals in these difficult times." I know as I was in charge of the carnivores and half the zoo.

Fact: the lion cubs we could afford the contraception injections however, these injections have a high failure rate and did not work. Inbred? The zoo never said anything of the sort, that was all down to the poor journalistic press. All the animals were given new homes, housed in the UK, Europe and some returned to their owners.
