@@Squiddit While I don't necessarily disagree with his criticisms, I think that a lot of them come from not understanding where the experimentation comes from and thus in his review it comes as him being ignorant (or just outright ignoring) the subtext of the album, which is why the 7 feels weak. Especially when he seems to pay lip service to said subtext.

I'm MEGA late to finding this album and I'm surprised that I feel like I completely agree with Melon, but it seems a lot of the comments have a different take on it (in particular Yoshi's Island was a low point for me as well) - I'm influenced by context quite a bit, so anything to help me better understand the record and enjoy it more is appreciated!

God underrated album. People keep saying it's emo but it's really cool. Edgy? More like an awesome supportful song. This is their first album and it's just complete bangers. All the tunes are catchy too, I'm giving this a hard 9. 10 is if they had more background.

The only problem with giving this a 10 is the lyrics aren't very special for most of the songs and as good as the tracklist is, there isnt a very grand message coming from the music like other 10s. But I do agree with it being more of an 8

The bands aesthetic & image, from their album cover, the name of their band, album and song, especially those lowercase song titles led me to believe it would be a “trying to be innovative and quirky band but is actually not” record. But after a quick listen, I realized that’s not the case whatsoever. Super creative and pretty weird. I do realize I shouldn’t initially judge any band or album based on their imagery. Great review!

I get the vibe of like, and this the first song on the album, youre lying down for a nap and you fall asleep for a second and then your best friend bursts in and takes you to go get your favorite drink and watch a movie, and at the end it would be 1 year later and you miss your friend and you two dont talk anymore. Idk just the vibe i got from that song

i personally dont think that reason the lyrics dont just sound like teenage angst isnt because the whole thing is meant to sound theatrical, i think the reason is because of context. glass beach has the musical ability to properly contextualize the lyrics so they dont sound cringey, the reason teenage angst tends to sound cringey is likely due to the over the topness mentioned here. teenage angst isn't baseless (at least it isn't a decent portion of the time) its just conveyed in a way that is too basic(?) if we take a lot of teenage angst things and change the wording you get poetry, but here instead of changing the wording, they changed the delivery; they added musical composition that not only allowed room for the words to be said, but set them up in such a way that they didn't feel like someone trying to be edgy, but like actual real emotions being experienced by someone

Nicholas Taniguchi If I had to call them one thing it would just be “experimental indie” but more specifically I think they imploy a lot of emo vocal and lyrics themes with pop, electronic, psych, jazz, and other instrumental/melodic characteristics as well.

Glass beach came out with a new album "Plastic death", It put. a-lot more effort on the sound then vocals and i would say that the new album is even more ambitious than the first glass beach album. Please go check it out, as i would argue that it is truly worth checking out. And also you said you would review if they came out with something new :)

My god, this album is amazing imo. Classic J Dies and Bedroom Community are easily my new favorite songs, i love how fast and aggressive Classic J gets and i just feel drawn to Bedroom Community though i'm not exactly sure why. Every time i listen to it i feel like i have to stop when Classic J ends even though it's the first track, it's just so emotionally draining

Counterpoint to your 7 I consider this album to be the material that relates to my age group that AJR could only dream of producing. It’s an honest album that takes no prisoners and the roughness only adds to it. I’ve found myself putting this album on repeat more than any other album because for once I found an album I could relate to. Social isolation, reaching adulthood post-recession, gender dysphoria and other varying topics that speak to people between 18-30 help propel this album to spread more of a modern rebellious message and mood than any album from 2019 has. Shoulda been a 10 honestly. Your opinion is different obviously but I think it has a message and purely genuine vibe that surpasses any other indie record this year.
