PHILIP GLASS (b. 1937)
Satyagraha
Act II: Rabindranath Tagore
Scene 1 - Confrontation and Rescue (1896)
Performed by the New York City Opera Chorus & New York City Opera Orchestra
Conducted by Christopher Keene
www.philipglass.com/
*Satyagraha (English pronunciation: /sʌtˈjɑːɡrəhə/, Sanskrit satyāgraha "insistence on truth") is an opera in three acts for orchestra, chorus and soloists, composed by Philip Glass, with a libretto by Glass and Constance de Jong. The opera is loosely based on the life of Mohandas K. Gandhi, and is the second part of Glass's "Portrait Trilogy" of operas about men who changed the world, which also includes Einstein on the Beach and Akhnaten. Philip Glass's style can broadly be described as minimalist, but the music in Satyagraha is somewhat more expansive than is implied by that label. The cast of the opera includes 2 sopranos, 2 mezzo-sopranos, 2 tenors, a baritone and 2 basses and a large SATB chorus. The orchestra is strings and woodwinds only, no brass or percussion.
The title of the opera refers to Gandhi's concept of non-violent resistance to injustice, Satyagraha, and the text, from the Bhagavad Gita, is sung in the original Sanskrit. In performance, translation is usually provided in supertitles. As the passages are generally repeated, the DVD provides the full text at the beginning of each scene.
Satyagraha was commissioned by the city of Rotterdam, Netherlands, and was first performed at the Stadsschouwburg (Municipal Theatre) there on September 5, 1980 by the Netherlands Opera and the Utrecht Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Bruce Ferden.

I didnt remember this from the stranger things 3 trailer, but I definitely noticed it in episode 6, holy crap. What a crazy sequence. Millie and Dacre both deserve emmy's for that scene alone. All the flayed just walking mindlessly? The threats? Holy crap. Just insane.

@HARMONICO101 Thank you so much for posting this. I'm sick of people trying to denigrate Glass just because he doesn't strictly adhere to sonata form or the traditional classical style. Glass's "inspired" works are master pieces in my book. He is expanding the possibilities of classical music without forsaking core classical principles, I am a fan.

I just heard this for the first time on Stranger Things (I apologize, gatekeepers). But I was positive this was not the first time I had heard similar music. My searching led me to the name Philip Glass, and to here. But.... I had to know.... was this related to the same music that has been seared into my memory since I was 3 years old? Music I never the had name for, but was always oddly intrigued and fascinated by? Music from an animated set of skits from Sesame Street. The search terms "philip glass sesame street" confirmed what I've wanted to know for 40 years. And now I must dive into this brilliant man's entire catalogue.

the problem with glass, although i do love many of his works, is that it is often the same features that are used. i am not too fluent in english but this piece makes me think of his violin concerto (which i find incredible) but here in a way that has less savor. this is not a modern problem actually, see vivaldi... but when you heard something similar from the man, this gets somehow a bit bland.

@nbtothepower Amongst the elite snobbery of classical enthusiasts, there was(though largely eroded now) a fairly stedfast anti-minimilistic culture of which Glass was considered king and consequently chastised for. These people do denigrate him because he doesn't fit the mold of 18th-19th century music. The same people have a huge distain for atonal music and anything that breaches too heavily sonata form(most of the 20th century).
