I worked in the park for years, always walking by this place, enjoying the creative process. Finally started taking lessons... what a blast! After you get used to the idea of 2000 degree molten glass being a few inches from your bare skin... the rest is a piece of cake. Andy is a very patient teacher, and works with all levels of students... from beginner to advanced. I am very proud of all the pieces I've made during my lessons. Have even made gifts of several pieces to friends!

I stumbled across Andy back in 2004 when I was in Balboa Park for a college course assignment. I was absolutely mesmerized by her! Last month, I started taking classes in Detroit and I'm hooked for life!

Amazing process, but you really didn't need to show everything "a second time", as this is a video we can choose to rewatch parts of at any time! Thanks for the video and all, though! Truly fascinating.

So much can go wrong during this process... I'm amazed at the people who've mastered such a difficult craft. I've tried a bit of blacksmithing myself, which allows for a bit of error if you know how to fix it (metal is tough for the most part). Glassblowing, however, has no room for error. One wrong move and you have to start over from scratch.

+Elizabeth Aurich I'd say it's largely similar. Minor mistakes can be corrected, but the wrong mistake at the wrong time can ruin a lot of work.

Elizabeth Aurich Minor mistakes can be fixed but major mistakes suck because you usually have to scrap the whole piece. Trust me it sucks😢

The Leidenfrost effect. Wikipedia has a page on it if you want to look it up. Basically, the water in the soaked newspaper flashes to steam, and the steam provides an insulating barrier between the glass and the paper. It's surprisingly effective. You can work on the glass for a long time before you start to feel the heat through to paper.

To Alina N who is having trouble opening your pieces smoothly, it sounds like the issue is that you are not getting your pieces hot enough to open them smoothly. Don't be afraid to get your pieces what our studio calls 'screamin hot'. you should have better results.

when I open my glass, my jacks always make indents on the inside of the glass. The end result is that it looks like a pie crust. Ideas on how to prevent this?.. my first drinking vessel looked like something only my mom would like - because she's morally obligated to... Certainly nothing like this one.

why did we have to watch every thing twice ???
@SnowlandX
@SnowlandX 10 жыл бұрын
Because this is brought to people as a lesson, and repetition makes you remember it better.
@yogiblak7666
@yogiblak7666 10 жыл бұрын
SnowlandX No, VIDEO allows US to rewind to the part we don't understand. When the editor of the video decides to show things twice, we are CONFUSED as to which step we are at. It's WEIRD.
@SnowlandX
@SnowlandX 10 жыл бұрын
If repetition confuses you that's a problem on your end. Especially when it's made this obvious they're using repetition for educational purposes.
@yogiblak7666
@yogiblak7666 10 жыл бұрын
Dude, it isn't repetition that is the issue. When you repeat everything right after the original, then you aren't reinforcing the idea because it is still fresh. You need to take a psychology course and learn how the human mind learns. A summary at the end of the video would serve a better purpose. It is confusing because they aren't even playing the same clip over, they play another clip shot all over again, again, which makes no sense. That is why no other company who does learning videos do it THIS way. Nice try at an insult, buddy. But again, information is only RETAINED during repetition if the brain has time to process the original information. This plays them back to back so it is the same as ONE time, NOT repetition. Educate yourself.
