In this video, I show the unloading of the kiln of several glazed bowls for our local empty bowls event (which is now postponed)... I am using the following glazes in this video:
Coyote Gunmetal (In the Archie’s base series- I use only on rims, and over another glaze for stability to prevent shivering (chipping due to different glaze fit with my clay) Very runny when overlapped, and beautiful on rims!
Coyote Blue Purple (In the Archie’s base series- I use only on rims, and over another glaze for stability to prevent shivering (chipping due to different glaze fit with my clay) Very runny when overlapped, and beautiful on rims!

Coyote Steel Gray Shino
Coyote Shino

Coyote Desert Sage (very shinoish)
Coyote Cobalt
Coyote Baby Blue Satin
Coyote Lapis Satin
Coyote Licorice (Two Step Undercoat)
Coyote Sea Mist (Two Step Overcoat)
Coyote Marshmallow (Two Step Overcoat)
Coyote Blue Moon ((Two Step Overcoat)

I really liked your glazing videos. I'm 63 and getting back into pottery after a 15 year hiatus. It was a late in life start to a hobby but I loved doing it with my late wife. She had taken pottery in college and I got her back into it after some medical stuff as a diversion. I asked her to show me how to throw and it was Katy bar the door after that. I still have the recipes I got from my instructor in Northern Virginia in the early 2000's but would like to expand a little and some of your glazes looked great. I'm looking for sources for recipes (books, subscription etc.) Thanks again for the great videos.

hi!! first of all thank you for your videos, they are very informative and helpful. i have a question, at 9:10 on this video you have used multiple layers on the bowls... i love the outcome, and i wonder if i wanted to have the white piece (only) with the black dots, i should go for marshmallow over licorice? would that give me a result of a pure white and black spots on the whole piece?
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 2 жыл бұрын
It won't be a pure or crisp black and white- but that combo is lovely. If you want true black with white dots, you may consider application of dots of contrast color with a syringe. I have done that before with coyote white, and coyote black dots, and it works well!

Hi Karan...your work is beautiful! I recently glazed a noodle bowl for a gift, and discovered that layering certain glazes can compromise the chemistry of the glazes, and subsequently affect the food safety of the bowl. I was told that I can layer celadons made by amaco without any issues, but am looking for other alternatives to line my bowls with. Any suggestions/advise would be greatly appreciated. Have been looking on line but haven’t found any specific information regarding safe combos. Thank you again!!

hello! I wanted to ask you if its possible to mix/layer different glazes that are fired in low temperature when used on earthware?
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass Жыл бұрын
Yes it is possible. But, I would highly recommend testing on a piece before doing it on something you like. That being said, all sorts of glazes have different characteristics. Some may not do well layered. Some may. You just have to get to know your glazes- and perhaps trust the people who do know them! I'm sure some studios may say not to layer- but that may be due to the characteristics of their particular glazes that they use!

@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Rosie- I typically use cone 5 bmix for my personal stuff. This video was a school clay, which is very forgiving for the kids, it's standard 259- which is a cone 6-10, and has an absorption a bit higher than I really want, so I am planning on making a switch to just a cone 6 clay for classes. The thing I like about that, is it is forgiving for students, and takes refiring to cone 6 multiple times without issues of bloating. I am contemplating switching to Standard 553 - warm buff as a cone 6.

It was not the amount of glaze that caused the run but perhaps the hold time?? You original had almost no movement.
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 2 жыл бұрын
Right- the Archie’s series moves when firing over another glaze. (I apply it with a straight line, and the fluxes in it will make it run) If you put it on too thickly, it moves more. The hold time is normal to get the cone 5 temp to the cone 6. With application of less glaze, it may have been better.

That isn't because of the wax, that was the glaze application being too heavy, and it ran. Wax doesn't keep glaze from running, it just makes the bottom easier to clean before firing. :)
