This video demonstrates how I glaze my double hole paper beads and regular paper beads. I talk about using PC-Petrifier and Vibrance. Some of the ideas were inspired by Lisa of Beyond Bracelets.

I’ve been a paper-based mixed media artist for more that 20 years and a fiber artist for more than 40 years before that. I made a paper bead curtain years ago and have been bitten by the bug again. I’m still testing substrate weights and media and sharing what I’m learning with my like minded club pals. Your videos are inspirational to say the least. I’m planning out a paper bead valance, made from book pages and neutral fabrics and shirt buttons, to hang over the lace banquet tablecloth that serves as drapery in my bedroom. Thanks for posting. Your suggestion of PC Petrifier is the best ever! I've been using it over a year now and love working with it. Here's another suggestion - I string my beads on fishing line and add a 1 oz. fishing lure to the end of each strand. That way the bead strand hangs straight as it dries. (I had trouble with the cheap fishing line curling up with just the beads on it.) When I add a new coat, I switch the lure to the other end and hang it upside down.

I love that idea with the 1oz fishing lure! I may have to come up with another weighty idea and present it on KZfaq in the future. I wil mention that you gave me the idea for the fishing lure. I have been thinking I do need to come up with some sort of weight at the end.
@fxblf

Before I start stringing, I make a loop in the fishing line using a crimp bead. I take a fishing lure and put a head pin through it, making a loop at the top of the lure from the head pin. Then I add it to the loop on the fishing line with a jump ring. When I'm done stringing, I add another loop at the end of the fishing line with another crimp bead. I hang it one way, then after a coat is dry, move the lure to the other end of the line with a jump ring and hang it again. Works out well. You don't need to give me credit - I'm just happy to help someone else out with a tip.

Great video. Thanks for posting. ..I have also been doing my glazing using this dipping and hanging method. ..however I have found d that when it comes time to separate the beads after drying...some beads are damaged where they where stuck together. Either the glaze pulls some of the paper off the connected bead or there is a pooling of glaze where they were joined which looks unattractive. Do you have this problem or is there something I can do to avoid this. Your input would be appreciated.
@JustPlainFun
@JustPlainFun 9 жыл бұрын
hilariusaquarius You can separate the beads with either perler beads or cut up coffee stirrers. I just bought some coffee stirrers for just this purpose. I also make sure to break apart the beads after every coat. I have never had this problem. Also make sure to use the waste beads at each end to catch the extra drips.

great thanks..I have one more question.lol. I cannot make a roundish bead no matter how I cut the strips.i did 1/4 wide for the core but I'm not sure if I'm doing the tapered strip correctly. Can you please help.😊thank you so much
@JustPlainFun
@JustPlainFun 8 жыл бұрын
+Donna Ward Making round beads is not easy. Basically you need to make sure the width of the wide end is the same width as your finished bead. You need to make a sample bead first and see how big in diameter it is then make the wide end of your strip that same length. It does not work every time because of the various thicknesses of the papers and card stocks that are out there. It really is trial and error until you come up with the right paper thickness, strip length and width of wide end of strip combination.

Hi Julie, I have watched this video several times. I love how well you explain in all your videos. I need some help. I feel when I get to the end of several dippings, I am disappointed in how my beads look. I dip 4 times in PC Petrifier. In fact, I just received my 5 gallon order of it!! My first try I used to Vibrance and hung them exactly like when you dip in the PCP. It really clogs near the bottom. I have since ordered what you use now, but have not gotten it in. I am trying to get a heavy gloss finish and my beads look slightly shiny after the PCP. Do I need to apply the Vibrance in a different way. Or let it dry longer? Need help for a finished look. thanks
@JustPlainFun
@JustPlainFun 8 жыл бұрын
I use 2 coats of Fast Finish Decoupage after dipping my beads 2-4 times in PC Petrifier which makes them nice and shiny. I allow them to dry 1 hour between dippings and overnight after the last dipping. I also make sure to turn them over after each dip for even coverage.

Great tutorial! Is there any sealer you'd suggest for inkjet printed images? Everything I've tried causes the ink to run. Thanks!
@JustPlainFun
@JustPlainFun 6 жыл бұрын
You can try spraying a fixative on your paper after you print it, then allow it to dry before you roll your beads. I only have problems with ink running when I use Sharpie markers. I use paper and cardstock with ColorLok technology so all of my printed papers don't run. I also use Matte photo paper. Go to: www.colorlok.com/ to read about how it works and how to find it. I look for reams of paper with the logo that is in the upper left corner of the above web site. I have been using this type of paper for several years and have had no trouble with the ink running.

Do you have to glaze between the beads separately (after they are off the line ) since they were touching and it seems like maybe not much if any of the sealant gets in there?( I have never done this but I want to try and was just wondering, since they will be for a necklace for my niece and she may get them damp when washing her hands or playing.... Thank you soo much for sharing this, I am way excited to do this and maybe my niece is old enough to try at least the rolling part, she is 9, I just would not want her around the glazes unless the white Elmer’s glue ( like you said in another video) might be safe. Does the school glue Elmer’s work or would it not be strong enough?.. Maybe if she is just playing dress up or something with the beads she would not have to glaze them or I could do that part.... thanks again!
@JustPlainFun
@JustPlainFun 5 жыл бұрын
No I do not glaze the beads separately after they are off the line. That would defeat the purpose of glazing them the way I do. I break them apart after each dip and the action of dipping them after breaking them apart after each coat, adds more glaze to the ends of the beads. The only thing with using the glue and water is, over time, the beads may yellow since there is acid in the glue. It is a safer option though when working with kids. The Vibrance I use for the top coats is also safe for kids.

Another question 😀 how do you get your fishing line so straight? Mine curls up when I take it off the spool and it's very annoying.
@JustPlainFun
@JustPlainFun 8 жыл бұрын
+peaches5712 In my experience, the fishing line straightens out after the first round of bead dipping. I do reuse the fishing line and by the time I am ready to string on the 2nd batch of beads, the fishing line is straight. I do invert each strand after each dip which helps in getting it straight. I do have a problem with curling, when I cut a fresh piece of fishing line, off my roll but I make sure those strands are hanging away from the other strands until it is straight. Usually it is straight by the time I am done with the 4th dip. Hope this helps.

I have two questions, Do you ever have a problem with color from your beads bleeding into the PC Petrifier? The two kinds of pink beads you're glazing here are beautiful. Where do you get your papers from?
@JustPlainFun
@JustPlainFun 9 жыл бұрын
drobberbaron The only time I had a problem with the color running into the PC-Petrifier is when I used colored card stock. Next time I use colored card stock, I will use a small amount of PC-Petrifier in a small jar and keep it separate from the rest of the beads. The pink paper is from a 200 sheet pad of 12"x 12" scrapbook paper I bought about 8 years ago.

isn't the amt of fishing line needed to tie a knot at the ends much les costly than using crimp beads? Also do you use the heavy test line because it is thicker than lighter test?
@JustPlainFun
@JustPlainFun 6 жыл бұрын
50lb fishing line is hard to knot and using the crimp beads is a lot faster. I use 50lb fishing line because it is thicker and easier for me to work with.

+1994abbygirl I use PC-Petrifier for the base coats and Vibrance by Janice Mae for the top coats. You can use Mod Podge Gloss and water for the base coat. I would mix 1 part water to 4 parts Mod Podge or make it the consistency of milk. If you use Mod Podge as your base coat, make sure you use something like Vibrance for the top coat to prevent tackiness.

I wish I could post a photo here. I will upload what I have on Facebook and let you know where it is. I have just come up with a very quick and easy makeshift bead drying rack that is completely temporary. All you need is a shelf, some thing heavy like thick books and some wooden spoons. Lay the books on the shelf, I actually have cardboard magazine files and place the wooden spoons under the books or full magazine files on top of the spoon part of the wooden spoons and let the handles stick out so you can hang your strands of beads from them. I would put a trash can under your strands while they drip dry to catch the drips if possible.

Yes it does, especially when it's brand new and you just open it up. It kinda smells a little fish. Weird huh? It not noxious like a petroleum smell. I have asthma and it does not bother me that much. It does stink when it's new. The gallon I bought about 6 months ago does not stink as much as it did when it was new.

What is the difference between the PC Petrifier as a glaze and then the Vibrance as the last step? Are they both considered glazes??
@JustPlainFun
@JustPlainFun 8 жыл бұрын
The PC Petrifier is actually a wood hardener. It works best as a base coat for your beads since it will soak into the paper of your beads to make them hard. It also enhances or darkens the color of your beads. I have actually dipped a couple of strands of my beads 10 times into the PC-Petrifier and they came out just the same as if I dipped them 2 times in the PC-Petrifier and 2 times into the Vibrance. The Vibrance and Fast Finish Decoupage is actually thicker than the PC-Petrifier. I now use the Fast Finish Decoupage for my top coats. It is less expensive for me than Vibrance even though both are equally wonderful to use as a top coat.

Julie, thanks, this is all so new to me. I did my first set of beads ever and I'm in the process of PC Petrifier coats. 2 Questions please, I bought the Vibrance , do I dip it just like the wood hardener and how long do I let them hang with the Vibrance? And, on my first dipping in PC Petrifier, I noticed the scrapbook paper got the wet paper , spotted look, I didn't know if that would change or I need to do something different for lighter paper?
@JustPlainFun
@JustPlainFun 8 жыл бұрын
I never noticed a spotty appearance with my beads with the PC Petrifier. I know I got it with other finishes when I got the white glue on the outside of the bead while rolling them and didn't clean the glue off. You dip the beads into the Vibrance just like the PC Petrifier and I let them dry one hour between coats.

Hello Julie, I am double posting here.... The first was to school the unruly pup Anthony down below. Now I would like to add a suggestion and get your opinion. SInce I have never glazed paper beads but I DO make hand-dipped taper candles, I was thinking of dipping the strands like I would dip multiple tapers. Do you think tying the strands to a horizontal rack and dipping the strands all at once into a narrow but sufficiently deep container of the PC-P would work well? If you cannot mentally picture what I mean, please search hand-dipped candles and look for an example of multiple candle dipping. Anyone else with experience with dipping, feel free to chime in! Again, thank you, Julie, for sharing your experience and ideas.

Thank you for your kind words! On dipping them like candles. You could do that but one thing you have to keep in mind. Unlike candles, you need to invert your strands of beads after each dip so you get even coverage. I would think you need to be able to tie both ends of each strand to a dowel or something to be able to invert them. I will see what I can come up with. Thank you for your idea!

Sure, I would string them just as you have... :o) With a tail to binder clip at both ends they can be flipped to be redipped!

You can let the extra PC drip onto a piece of cotton fabric to stiffen the fabric to make more beads. I have a video on that! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rb-DqMV52NLLdqM.html. I also have a video on making bead sheets with tissue paper using the waste drips. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f9CpmJxi3JmaY4k.html. I no longer use binder clips at each end. I use crimp beads and make a loop at each end. I do have a newer video. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/icVno6-nzd_FlGw.html

ohiosprincess001 I ordered the PC-Petrifier from Amazon.com. I bought a gallon of it. You can get it at Home Depot but it may cost more. The Vibrance is only available on line. I bought mine through Etsy. Amazon may have some in stock as well. The PC-Petrifier is the name of it.

some bead makers are using hard modge podge. If I use that instead of the Pc Petrifier would I use 2 coats of that before the vibrance. I like shiny hard beads. I like the idea of the Modge Podge putting it on with my fingers instead of the PC Petrifier
@JustPlainFun
@JustPlainFun 8 жыл бұрын
+Susan K I use 2 Coats of PC-Petrifier and 2 coats of a final glaze. Right now I am using Liquid Laminate but when that is gone, I will switch to Vibrance. Both the Liquid Laminate and Vibrance result in a shiny hard finish. I do not like Mod Podge because it can result in a tacky finish. It always did for me when I used to use it years ago.

+Julie A. Bolduc They came out a few years ago with a non-tacky Mod Podge Hard Coat which really isn't tacky when it dries--I didn't like the regular (and forever sticky) Mod Podge, either. Thank you for making such a thorough video! :)

I haven't thought of selling the numbers but I could. Perhaps in sets of 6 of each number? What do you think?

@JustPlainFun
@JustPlainFun 8 жыл бұрын
+Donna Ward If you put enough coats on, it will seal and shine. I once put 10 coats and they were as if I did 2 coats of PC-Petrifier and 2 coats of Vibrance. I prefer only having to dip 4 times so I do the 2 coats of each.

The PC-Petrifier, when it is new out of the bottle, does and can irritate some people. It doesn't bother me much and I have asthma and allergies and I am a bit sensitive to common allergens. The Fast Finish Decoupage, (formerly known as Liquid Laminate) and Vibrance are more like white glue in odor and not bad at all.
@JustPlainFun
@JustPlainFun 7 жыл бұрын
I haven't had any trouble with either glaze on my skin but I do keep a paper towel near by to wipe my hands off if I get any of it on me. You can always wear latex gloves if you are concerned.

@anthony riley In future, at least attempt to display a bit of class! You are welcome to use the Caesar's choice icons to convey your negative opinion regarding the video. Reserve the messaging area for CONSTRUCTIVE dialog. Additionally, I see you have yet to post a video of your own. When you demonstrate your superior talent in videography, then perhaps your opinion will actually have value. Though, not likely, since your snide comment neither offers productive insight for improving anything related to this artist's efforts nor does it contribute anything to the subject matter. In fact, all it reveals is the shallowness of your mind and the meanness of your character. Julie A. Bolduc Thank you Julie for sharing your experience in this process. As a newcomer to this type of bead production, I appreciate your generosity of time and innovations. Ignore the rabble who have nothing better to offer than their petty hate and discontent!
