The team backing Glen is the wrecking crew (top tier and prolific session musicians), written by another top tier talent, Jimmy Webb.

You forgot to mention Glen was part of the Wrecking Crew for years before he finally got his chance to sing solo and become the star that he was.

Remember this song the next time your power goes out, but then is restored. It is a great tribute to the men and women who have a very hard and dangerous job who makes our lives easier.

Worked as an Electrician for most of my young life. The talk about his work and can't take a vacation unless it's raining and he can't work hits so close to home. Great lyric "and I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time". He has a few more great songs, I love his younger ones like By the Time I get to Phoenix, Galveston, Dreams of the Everyday Housewife, and of course my favorite Gentle On My Mind.

Go watch the documentary film "The Wrecking Crew." It's about the longtime L. A. studio musicians that played on literally HUNDREDS of hit records in the '60s and '70s. And for a long time, Glen Campbell was one of the most in-demand studio musicians. If you needed a guitar player, you'd want Glen Campbell to play on your record. Then by the mid '60s, he launched his own solo career. And of course, whenever he recorded his songs, he would call on The Wrecking Crew to play the instruments on his songs. This was no exception. Jimmy Webb wrote this song and a few others that Campbell recorded. Check out "By the Time I Get to Phoenix." Glen's '60s songs are just the best.

Glen Campbell was actually one of The Beach Boys for a while. He is probably one of the best guitarists of classical rock. You might want to react to him performing with Roy Clark (another expert guitarist). Glen Campbell’s cover of Mull of Kintyre (Paul McCartney). is really impressive.

#1 hit, Glen had his own network variety show by then. The songwriter, Jimmy Webb already had a Grammy or two, a top notch songwriter...in the studio, Glen borrowed Wrecking Crew member Carol Kaye's bass guitar, out the treble way up and the bass tone way down, and played the low sounding guitar solo.

"Perfect" is a very appropriate word for it. Great song. Written by Jimmy Webb, a brilliant songwriter. Check out others he wrote, many of which Glen sang.

"Still on the line", a reference to being hung up on someone, wanting them... The word play that he's also a wire repairman makes it genius

Be sure to catch "Gentle On My Mind" - which was basically his debut - and "Galveston" and "By the Time I Get to Phoenix." His last big hit was "Southern Nights." Campbell was briefly a Beach Boy, for about three or four months, filling in for Brian Wilson on a tour around '65.

Lineman are any of the folks that service those elevated utility lines and poles. Some telephone, some electric. Used to include telegraph, too. It's a good job but can be dangerous

So I believe, the hiding meaning I get is In the lyric when it says " The Wichita Lineman is still on the line" The woman has rebuffed him and, there's an old phrase "She's stringing him along." So when he says "He's still on the line." It means "she's stringing him along." That's my guess.

The Wrecking Crew ! We should have a statues of them they gave us so much. All telephones used to go through the lines. It’s a beautiful song about a regular working class man, who at that time were admired deeply in our culture.
