As long as I have known the Glenfarclas brand, it is a whisky that I have heard very few negative comments on. Prior to the Scotland tour I had reviewed several of their whiskies on KZfaq and did some presentations on the distillery itself as well as the history of the Grant family.
John Grant purchased the farm lease and the Glenfarclas distillery for £512, in 1865 when his neighbor and the founder of Glenfarclas distillery, Robert Hay, had passed away. From that time on the Grants were subsequently named either George or John for the next six generations.
Historic records show that Robert Hay ran an illegal distillery from the late 1790s' on the Rechlerich Farm which was on the Ballindalloch estate. Robert Hay didn't take out a license on the distillery until 1836. Glenfarclas means "valley of the green grass", an indication of the richness of the pasture land which surrounds the distillery. John Grant and his son George were successful Aberdeen Angus cattle breeders and were more focused on farming than the whisky making so they hired their cousin, the iconic "Whisky Man", John Smith from Glenlivet, to run the distillery while they stayed farming at their own Blairfindy Farm. When John Smith moved on five years later to start up Cragganmore distillery, John and George took over running the distillery.
It is not one of the giants like Glenfiddich or Glenlivet or owned by Diageo but it is one of the few independent family owned companies today that have stuck to their core values of making an honest presentation of quality whisky. And what I mean by an honest presentation is that it is an affordable whisky with natural color, non chill filtered and some good quality cask maturing. Glenfarclas has been traditionally maturing it's whiskies in Oloroso Sherry Butts and Hogsheads from Miguel Martin Cooperage in Jerez, Spain.
So this was not just another distillery tour that we had stumbled upon. This was planned well ahead here back in Canada because Glenfarclas was on my list as one of the top ten distilleries to visit.
I hope you watch the presentation on the colorful distillery history and the challenges that the Grant family had to deal with to have successfully survived to this day. If you're not into the presentation and just want to watch the review just scroll ahead. Enjoy the video. Slàinte Mhath
