2 жыл бұрынSINCE RECORDING THIS REVIEW, IT HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION THAT THERE IS INDEED, NO ADDED COLOUR IN THIS WHISKY AND THAT IT IS STATED ON THE LABEL. THIS WAS AN OVERSIGHT ON MY BEHALF AND I APOLOGISE TO THE DISTILLERY AND TO YOU THE VIEWERS, FOR MY MISTAKE
This is a whisky that, for me, feels like it has been around forever. The truth is...this 12 year old, is relatively new to the world. My impression though...is that it's gonna be around for a long time.

Single Malt: Whisk(e)y made by one distillery using malted barley.
Single Grain: Whisk(e)y made by one distillery using one or a selection of grains (usually corn, wheat, rye, etc.)
Blended Malt: Whisk(e)y made by blending single malts from more than one distillery.
Blended Grain: Whisk(e)y made by blending single grains from more than one distillery.
Blended Scotch: Whisky made by blending single malt and single grain (whiskies) from one or more distilleries.
N.A.S. Non age stated whisky. No age on bottle.
U.S. Proof: Proof is 2 x ABV. Example…100 Proof = 50% ABV.
Imperial/British Proof: ABV is 4/7 of Proof. Example…100 Proof = 57.1% ABV.

Glengoyne 12: what's not to like? It's an enjoyable, well balanced dram where bourbon and sherry casks work well together, and while there's nothing outrageaous or extravagant about it, this has enough body and flavour to lift it up from 'middle of the road' entry level status. Thanks for adding this to the series and giving it some proper attention, Jim!

Another enjoyable review Jim. I love the Glengoyne 12; you don't have to think too much about this, just sit back and enjoy it for what it is. Like others no doubt, an increase to 46% and non-chill filtered would make this a stonking dram. An awful lot to this balanced and flavour-some whisky that will see me return to it whenever the opportunity arises (given that I'm a dram away from a bottle kill, that will be sooner rather than later 😉). Slainte my friend 🥃👍.

One of the first bottles we bought when we restarted our whisky journey, along with it’s younger 10yo sibling. Both fab drams but particularly enjoy the 12yo and always try to have a bottle in the cupboard! Also great value for money too, possibly the only downside is the 43% abv. Great dram and another great review!

How would you compare the 10 and the 12? (I own and love the 10, and want to try the 12).

@@johnny1873 think the 12yo has the edge with a little more depth of flavour to it, if you like the 10yo would be shocked if you didn’t enjoy the 12yo too ...

Finally, got around to commenting! We don't get the 12 here in Ontario, only the 10, and I loved it. As Hells said it was one at the beginning of my whisky journey and as a result will hold a wee place in my heart ... and it's still good. :). I also got to go to Glengoyne at the end of last year and loved the tour and the blending experience. Beautiful day and a beautiful distillery. Great folks there too. Will always love Glengoyne ... might feed into Roy's vPub topic for this week? ;)

Have yet to try any Glengoyne as I have only seen the 10 here and always found something more interesting. This series has started me thinking about my whisky purchasing. I seem to be staying away from entry level or core range offerings of most distilleries once I have tried them(what would be called "daily drinkers") and focusing more on unique bottlings that are presented naturally. Jim, am I a whisky snob? I certainly can't afford to be😳. Good stuff and cheers!

Cheers Bill. From an outside perspective we, who like to spend a little more and be a little more choosy about our whisky picks could, I suppose, be considered snobs. Indeed on one occassion, when in my brother's presence...I turned down the offer of a cheap Irish blend from a punter (truth was, I just wasn't in the mood). My brother exclaimed..."you'll have to excuse him...he's a whisky snob!" Dumbfounded by this, I later repeated what he had said to my wife. "How dare he!" she said. "Doesn't he know you are a whisky bore!" 😄😄 I may have told that one before but, it always gives me a laugh because it's so genuine. I'd say we all travel this journey in our own way. I call myself a novice because I always feel like I'm learning something new and will never surpass that but, to someone who's just starting out...I may be considered a whisky snob. From this novice's point of view...I'd say there's nothing wrong with your way of doing things buddy. As long as you don't exceed what you can afford...you're grand. But don't quote me on that 😄

Hi Jim , Glengoyne 12, haven’t had it for a while but it is a decent dram, shame Glengoyne don’t bottle their core range (except the CS of course)at 46% also its not a bad price (around €40) but in this category there’s alot of competition. Thanks for your honest and good review, slàinte Jim.

Great review as usual, Jim. I managed to pick this up for under £30 back in 2020 and thought it was fantastic at that price. I'd happily pay £35-£38 but not too much more. I'm pretty sure the previous livery of the bottle said it was natural colour (either on the label or on the packaging) - it would be disappointing if they've started adding e150 now.

Cheers Yash. Yeah it does say Natural Colour on the bottle. This was pointed out to me so I added an apology in the video description. I don't doubt for one second that you won't be the only one to mention it though 😄😄

Had a couple of these early in my decent down the malt whisky rabbit hole. It's very nice but I have a love hate thing with Glengoyne. They make beautiful whisky and do so many things right BUT it would be so much better at 46% or even 48% and NCF. Had two bottles of the Legacy chapter one that is 48% NCF and that would be such a great place for the core range to be. Know I'm preaching to the choir here but there you are. Probably going to miss Monday but will be taking my mom to lunch when you are live. She is also a malt fan that I didn't discover until 4 years ago. Evidently there was always bottle of Glenlivet 12 tucked away when I was a kid in the late 1960's. Now that I know she has gone through a variety of samples and am taking more with me for Monday. Her current favorite is the older version of Benromach 10. Cheers Jim

Cheers Tim. Can't argue with you. Would love to see Glengoyne bottled more naturally. I won't hold my breath waiting on it though. That's great about your mother. Fair play to her. I noticed you popping into the live stream. Much appreciated buddy. Don't think I got the chance to say hello but, it was very much appreciated nonetheless.

Enjoyed your review. I enjoy Glengoyne a fair amount and I hope everyone gets a chance to try it. I can't believe the value on the CS and while I like Glenallachie they are significantly more expensive over here. Thanks for your thoughts, cheers!

Cheers Jon. In a perfect world, all whiskies would be equally priced, equally available and released globally at the same time at with the same presentation. It's a damned shame we're so far away from achieving that isn't it buddy? Thanks for dropping in.

@@WhiskeyNovice I do wish everyone could try any whisky they wanted too. However, while frustrating it is also awesome that some whisky is unique or rare or hyper local. Gives us something to chase, or hear about or even just dream about. I must mention price often here, I'll try to rein that in a bit. Thanks again for sharing!

This is a good one worthy of your review. I like this one and it caused me to become a Glengoyne fan... but I have only focused on the higher quality offerings. This is an interesting example of the price disparity that has emerged in the US. I can pick this up for $55 online, but it is $110 at the local big national retailer. There is no way I would pay more than $60 for this. This just shows how prices are all over the place across the US. Good review and description, Jim. This is a tasty dram at the right price.

Cheers Bud. Yeah that's a ridiculous price swing. $55 is, in my opnion, top dollar for this whisky. To ask more, let alone double that, is just taking the piss. It's slightly worrying that some might actually pay that price thinking they're getting a mind blowing whisky 😬

This was available when I started my journey, and just what I needed to kick start the quest. And thank God....it kept me away from the mass produced 40%ers. It's a nice dram. As a novice I believed I found chocolate on the finish. That sticks with me even today. I picked up a second bottle and I couldn't keep it closed. For an uneccessary bottle in my collection I hit it pretty hard. I just like it. Even at 43% it can ride (in the back seat) with most integrity 12,13 or 14 year olds. I hate to be so nerdy but if this was 46???? It could be a contender! Tried an Old Particular indie 10 year old at 48%, that one needed quite a few months to open up. Different animal though. My first GA12 was Ralfy's heavy bourbon version and it's a good comparison. Actually a little funkier than the Glengoyne.

Thanks for reviewing this Glengoyne. In my opinion a decent dram, but I haven't had it in quite some time. Reason being that in this price range there are more interesting whiskies available. Slàinte mhath

Cheers Frank. Can't argue with that. I think it's something we all discover and is only a matter of timing. We hit on a lot of these "affordable" 12 year olds at some point (generally early) on our journey and then once, as you've suggested, we realise there are better presented whiskys for the same price...we don't look back. And I'd imagine it will always be like that. Slàinte my friend.

Everything that I wrote under the review of Tamdhu 12 stands for Glengoyne 12 too. In Bulgaria Glengoyne 12 is priced at roughly 36-37 GBP, some 30% over the price of Glenallachie 12. Mind you, the alcohol prices in Bulgaria are relatively low due to low taxes and excises. As long as the producer, distributor, retailer or somebody else along the supply chain doesn't get too ambitious (or plain greedy) and tries to sell it as a "premium" product. IMHO, given the underwhelming presentation Glengoyne 12 is overpriced and hence - not worth my money. There is nothing in the form of reviews or customers feedback that can convince me that this whisky is something really special. Competent, unoffensive, easy going, 43%, chill-filtered malt. So is the Tomatin 12 yo only it will set me back just ~27 GBP. I'd very much like to try a sample of Glengoyne 12. Paying the premium for a full size bottle - absolutely not. Cheers!

Nice vid and a decent bottle, but not one a pick up too often any longer. Where I am, gift packs of it with a "free" glencarin are quite quite common for about $45, so it can be pretty good value for money; but for about the same price I can find Craigellachie 13 (without the glencarin), and that's usually the deal-breaker for me. Question: Is Glenmorangie 10 40% where you are? It's 43% in the US, and is priced about the same as Glengoyne 10 @43% and Glencadam 10 @46%. Truth be told, I really like all three, but Glengoyne 10 is my favorite of the bunch, and I think I prefer it over their 12.

Much prefer the Glengoyne 12 over the Glenallachie 12. I find the latter over rated & boring, far more going on in the Glengoyne. Just my opinion.

How would you compare the 12 to the 10 year old? I really love the 10, but are yet to try the 12. Is it worth the extra money?

Here, there's a difference of about £10 between the 10 and the 12. Personally I'd say yes, that £10 is a step up and is noticeable. Cheers.

Whiskey Novice Thank you for you quick and informative response! I got a good deal on the 10 when ordering online (between 40-43 euros). I love in Sweden, and here the 12 costs around 58 euros, so quite a step from what I got the 10 for. But now I do feel inclined to go for the 12 anyway!
