When I was in chemo I was consumed by worries and fears. I thought of little else. A friend/colleague insisted on visiting and brought homemade sweets and piano duets, Schubert and PDQ Bach among them. She opened up my grand piano, we sat down and sight read music, laughed, hugged and played more. I swear my healing started that day. Music is a powerful agent for the heart and mind. the best to you, keep music in your soul and you'll do fine.

The CBC, the Canadian public broadcaster, worked with Gould for years and much of what we can see of him is CBC produced. A gratuitous tidbit but one I marvel at is the fact that arts funding in Canada really took off in the 1950s after the recommendation of Massey Commission (1951). Some critics knocked the commission and its recommendations for cultural snobbery and focus on “high” art, which is not unfounded. BUT within a few short years we got Gould, one of the greatest pianists and most remarkable artists of the twentieth century.

I read somewhere that Glenn Gould was a substitute for Paolini who played a concert night before and scheduled to record Beethoven #5 the morning after. I don’t remember why but Paolini canceled the recording suddenly. Very fortunately Glenn Gould was in town (Toronto). The CBC called him in the middle of the night (I think about 3am) and asked, (begged,more like) him to do the recording. His initial answer was that he hadn’t played the concerto for many years and also he is not too fond of #5 so he will think about it and an hour later he said “okay ,I will do it” . He showed up 9am in the morning and played! Just incredible!

Glenn Gould was out of this world and his musical memory was a legend. In 1970, when Italian pianist, Arturo Benedetto Michelangeli, was unable to carry out his scheduled performance of Beethoven’s Concerto No.5, Emperor, in Toronto, Gould was given a telephone call the night before the concert, and asked if he could come in and play it the next morning, with the Toronto Symphony and the conductor, Karel Ančerl, as a substitute for Michelangeli. Gould’s answer was positive, and he rehearsed the Concerto, which he had not played since he recorded it with Leopoldo Stokowski and American Symphony Orchestra in 1966, overnight. The concert was recorded for TV as planned, and aired on September 12, 1970. As can be seen and heard here, Gould and the orchestra played Beethoven’s Concerto flawlessly.

Eh, this is a thing any known pianist can do. Once you played a piece 20-50 times, it remains in hands for life. You are right, his memory was exceptional, is just the example which is not on spot.
@jesperth.petersen83862 жыл бұрын
@@Paroles_et_Musique - bearing in mind: 1) that Gould stopped performing in public in April 1964, and thus the repeated long term playing, solidifying the memories of music pieces by playing them 25-50 times on tour 2) that his studio recording of the Emperor under Stokowski was finished in 1966 - then going back four years later to play it live like this from memory, with 24 hours notice, is still enough of a solid feat to be commended as a big thing. So we have to agree to disagree on this.
@Paroles_et_Musique2 жыл бұрын
@@jesperth.petersen8386 Is not about disagreeing but how musicians memory works. Top pianists perform same work hundreds of times, and when you do that, it is in your head for life - what we call affect memory. Someone wakes you in the nigh, 15 years later, you can play it. Moreover, Emperor is not Rach 3 or Prokofiev 2, is something basic to memorize, with repetitive structure and technically easy.

@@Paroles_et_Musique totally false. There are no pianists at this level who would agree to show up on short notice like this to play such a piece as it could tarnish their reputation and it would not be worth the risk. Even Yuja knows ahead of time that Martha may cancel- it's pre-arranged that she's the backup and she is prepared as an alternate. Gould got less than 9 hours' notice to play this and performed at this competence...simply amazing. there are tons of pianists who've played pieces 100s of times and who stopped playing them and can no longer do so after sufficient time has passed.

Gould brings tremendous intensity, clarity and excitement, his deep love for and understanding of Beethoven really comes through in this mind-blowing performance which I must say, makes my heart race. Whew. Absolutely fantastic! This 2nd movement is maybe the single most beautiful piece of music ever written. Thank you Beethoven for this precious gift to humanity. I remember after my first child was born listening to this, to this day I cant listen to it without being overcome by emotion.

I'm sure, fellow piano lover, that you would class the 2nd movement of Beethoven's symphony no.7 alongside this wonderful piano work.

@@williambunter3311 Yes, although it has a more somber, tragic quality whereas the 2nd movement of the 5th piano concerto is so tender and joyful. I recall listening to this after the birth of my 1st child and it truly melts my heart. Beethoven composed so many great works, right? Honestly if I had to rate my personal favorites it is the 3rd and 9th symphonies, as well as the late piano sonata, no. 32 Op. 111. But there are many, many great and immortal works by this musical giant, including symphony no 7..

@@pianonight Agreed, he is rightly munbered among the musical giants. .Though for me his best piano works are the Waldstein and Pathetique piano sonatas and the 3rd piano concerto.

I was slightly younger when I first heard this in the early '60s - still love that version - Leon Fleisher with George Szell and The Cleveland Orchestra. Heard many others I love since then, and only one where I thought the player should not have tried. But, like you, this is the one I most come back to. It restoreth my soul.

I love Gould too. Especially for Bach which normally doesn't sound right on piano. However, for the emperor, van cliburn with reiner and the Chicago Symphony is to my ears, the greatest version. Like Gould on the Goldberg Variations.

Glenn Gould è uno di quei pochi artisti al mondo che ami o odi. Questo è un settore che uscire dalle righe non è consigliato, ma se sei un genio come lui, è come la licenza poetica, si può tollerare.
