Dynon Engine Probe Install Glen's Hangar Episode #10
Today Glen and Chris start installing the Dynon Certified Skyview glass panel in the Cessna 172B. They start with the engine probes to work the wiring from firewall forward back through to the new glass panel.
we also discuss making a new custom CNC machined, powder coated and LASER etched panel for the Cessna 172 - this is being designed and constructed by Lyle at Six Pack Aero (formerly Skyhawk Panels).

-Manifold pressure on a fixed pitch prop, though not necessary, SkyView needs to know Man Press. RPM and fuel flow to be able to compute Engine HP and % power widgets
-Fuel flow (red cube), not only instant gallons per hour, but also drives consumption based fuel computer. It's counting pulses that come up the wire as the turbin spins, 68k pulses/gallon (www.iflyei.com/wp-content/upl...)
-Mono audio, SkyView has stereo outputs, but you can combine L and R together for Mono systems.

A couple of clarifications on the info in this episode from the folks at Dynon: -Manifold pressure on a fixed pitch prop, though not necessary, SkyView needs to know Manifold Pressure, RPM and fuel flow to be able to compute Engine HP and % power widgets. -Fuel flow (red cube), not only instant gallons per hour, but also drives consumption based fuel computer. I love this series. Having just bought my first plane(150H) it really gives me a lot of insight into what goes into a major overhaul. I grew up around GA and spent several summers working for my Dad's A&P (and airport manager). He had a side business painting and I was the guy that did all the stripping dirty work (bottoms of the wings and fuselage) so your first couple of vids really spoke to me. I spent hours picking paint out of rivets. I'm only a few years behind you and while I don't think I'll ever try and tackle what you are doing, I sure appreciate the effort and enjoy the content.

For the time and effort spent on this project I would have thought replacing a 60 year old Rubber hose would have been on the list, I realize it passes a pressure test but its reduced flexibility would stress the components and joints over time. This is a great series.

From building fuel lines with AN fittings in my project cars and worrying about the same thing, most companies selling AN fittings will also sell an AN line cutter for cheap that doesn't debride the lines like a cutting wheel will.

Glen, I'm glad you included the description of the airplane in the comments. The 172 really hasn't change too much over the years, primarily cosmetics, and of course the change in the cabin design for the Omni-Vision window. But, the engine has been the one big change, going from a six banger to a four banger. I wonder, without actually going to look it up, is there an STC for upgrade the Continental O-300 to a Lycoming O-320, or, even better, an IO-320? In a previous reply, you said when I asked about IFR that you planned on running a VFR for now. I'm assuming then that the cut outs on either side of the pilot's yoke are for the radios. Are you going to be able to see them and have ease of control over them from your seat with the control wheel installed? To me, from where I sit, I think they would end up being right behind the control yoke. But, that's just what I see. I really am enjoying this refurbishment. I think you are going to have a really nice 172B when you get done here.

Hey Glen, I've been following in on this channel mainly because I'm a fan of your Glen & Friends channel. I'll admit, planes and flying don't have a strong fascination for me to begin with, but I love your enthusiasm and focus on this project. I have to say, even though I don't know much about planes, I can certainly see great working customer relationship with your choice of instrument manufacturer. I'm looking forward to further instalments on this build!

Since you're already spending a ton of money on your airplane, why didn't you buy braided fuel lines with the appropriate fittings in place for the transducer and the carb? Even if the really old existing fuel line is in good condition, it seems foolish to leave it when you've paid for all this other work.
@GlensHangar
@GlensHangar 2 жыл бұрын
Regulations… you are allowed to ‘fix’ or modify an existing component; not manufacture a new one. No one makes a certified braided steel fuel line for a Cessna 172, so we can’t buy one that’s already made to fit.
@PatrickPoet
@PatrickPoet 2 жыл бұрын
I didn't understand why the intake manifold pressure would be pointless without a variable speed prop. You say it's not necessary but then say why it is necessary for SkyView to understand what's going on in the engine. That's confusing. There wouldn't be much point to not instrumenting it since so much of the calculations the computer does in real time require it. It would cripple your system to not have it.
@GlensHangar
@GlensHangar 2 жыл бұрын
At the time we filmed this - I wasn't aware that the Dynon computer used the manifold pressure data in it's other engine management calculations. In a steam / clockwork gauge aircraft (that both Chris and I are more familiar with) manifold pressure is used to set the correct RPM / mixture / prop pitch combo and nothing else; since this plane doesn't have a constant speed prop 'MAP' data would be superfluous.
