Ingo Renner sent me out for my first solo at Tocumwal in 1973. What a great guy.

Wonderful document. BTW - the days winner Markku Kuittinen would win the first of his two world champion titles the same year this film was released 1987.

This is such a great video that really embodies the challenge of soaring and soaring competition. Too bad the quality is what it is. Having always flown contests and X country using GPS, I am really impressed with navigation skills of these pilots. That landscape is intimidating.

Old school, because no GPS and photo turnpoints instead. These Gliders probably reflect state of the art more than 30 years ago

Yes. This Video is about 35+ years old. I had it on VHS tape years ago.

I did not know that. What a loss to the world. The LS-6 he flew in this film “YV” is currently for sale and I am one of the interested parties.

This film is older than 25 years. The SSA put this out as a Chris Woods production. The one before it was “The Quiet Challenge” narrated by the great John Denver. As a kid I watched both of these VHS tapes until they turned to dust. LOL!!

Why old school ?

No GPS or track logs back then. Pilots needed to take photo proof of waypoints, ground observers had to determine start and finish times, etc. Pain in the ass compared to today!

I met Charlie Spratt once at Calistoga. A fantastic supporter of the sport of soaring.
