Superb, thanks Tim. I'm looking forward to our soaring and comp season in the UK couple of months to go yet. I really liked your description of the decision making and how many climbs it is possible to reject in the best conditions to improve your speed. The side panel with the task map really helped understand the context of the first leg. Well done 👍

When flying near cloud is there are height limits you need to worry about? Eg I believe 3000 AMSL or 1500 AGL, whichever is highest, here in Australia you need a 1000 foot clearance from the cloud mostly to avoid IFR traffic.

Yeah normal planes in NZ have 1000 foot clearance vertically, and 2km horizontally, unless either below 3000' ASL, OR less than 1000 feet above the ground. Gliders in NZ have an exception that takes it to 500 feet vertically. On top of that, we have special 'restricted glider flying areas' that we activate during a contest, so we can fly up to cloud base legally, without any risk of other non-gliding traffic popping out through the clouds into us. We still have to be clear of cloud enough to see each other, and see the ground at all times. FLARM also helps a LOT when it's bad visibility, and was required for the contest. Cheers for the tip!

Those first two climbs you stopped for were extremely satisfying! Enjoyed the Mike Lima subplot, a real Bane from the Dark Knight Rises kinda vibe... was it SW wind for that whole first leg?

Hi if you watch in 4k you can see the airspeed dial on the panel. As for wind direction, your guess is as good as mine!

@@PureGlide Thanks! More thought of the dominant direction of the wind as a general meteorological information that could be useful to interpret why the strongest lift under a cloud is where it is.

I really enjoy your videos and have learned a lot about what my own glider is capable of. Have you considered a 360° camera or a second camera pointing straight up for your future videos? I find I'm always trying to look up at the cloud directly above you to figure out exactly where that lift is coming from!

Congrats to the good outcome - would you mind analyzing if it was a bad route back from the 1st turnpoint? The other direction looked so uncomfortably dark.

Yeah I should have stuck to the dark line of cloud - that was the convergence line, and even if it wasn't lifting much under it, it still wouldn't have had the sink that I found going the way I did, which would have saved me having to stop and climb on the way South again...

Hi Tim, do you have a second mobile in your pocket? I always fly with my phone in my pocket in case I have to bail out and need to phone an ambulance etc. Thoughts?

No I don't, but I do have the PLB on my parachute. However it's only secured with Velcro which is probably not good enough. So it's a great point, I should sort out something better! Yes an old spare phone would be a good idea in the pocket. Or get a dedicated glider tablet.

@@PureGlide I’ve been playing around with the navigator app after watching this video and it really is great! I think I will be buying a “burner” phone to keep in my pocket and trying out the app for the rest of the season! I thought about the dedicated tablet, but seems you would either need a SIM card in it to access some of the features which rely on an internet connection.

There are two rectangular screens on the dashboard right of the big screen, below the small screen you can find the Vario. Presumably something like a LX S80.

You got distracted from your narrative for a moment at about 3:21 by the need to fly the glider. What were you saying about delaying your start call so you can start your engine? It seems unfair to the pure gliders to motor back for a re-start if you didn't like your initial run? Well done on the day!

Yeah we have some weird rule you can only motor back to the airfield if you haven’t called a start yet. You do have to call up for permission from the contest director. Weird I know, and yes somewhat unfair!
