Glioblastoma: Working to Turn the Tide on This Deadly Brain Cancer

Researchers at the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center are working to better understand and treat brain cancer.
One of the most pernicious types of brain cancer is glioblastoma, which claimed the lives of senators John McCain and Ted Kennedy. Even with the best current treatments, patients who live more than a year and half after diagnosis are counted among the lucky ones.
Several research labs at the Rogel Cancer Center are actively pursuing new efforts to extend and to improve the lives of patients with this deadly disease.
The lab of Maria G. Castro, Ph.D. and Pedro R. Lowenstein, M.D., Ph.D. - both professors of neurosurgery and cell and developmental biology at Michigan Medicine - is optimistic about initial results from a clinical trial stemming from their laboratory research, which uses gene therapy to attack tumors while also enhancing the immune system’s ability to fight them.
Meanwhile the lab of Daniel Wahl, M.D., Ph.D., an assistant professor of radiation oncology, is interested in how abnormal metabolism in these tumors makes them resistant to treatment with radiation. The lab is exploring different treatment combinations to overcome this resistance.

@@OffiicialSteff Thank you! 21 years is an inspiration to me and I'm hoping I can achieve that too. A positive attitude plays such a huge role in outcomes. There are peer-reviewed studies showing as much. It's just one of the reasons I started a podcast for people like us who have been affected by this disease. Our medical knowledge is growing and new potential treatments are always in development. Thank you so much for the kind words!

The doc tried craniotomy and did not go ahead as he said tumor was inoperable. He suggested only conventional radiation and told us not go with chemo according to him chemo was waste of money. A cancer survivor in the family adamantly opposed radiation. But I was keen to go ahead with whatever I can before we came to a firm decision she left us.

This is a monster that needs to be destroyed. My mom was given a dual pathology diagnosis of GBM and oligodendroglioma. From the date of her first symptom until her last breath took exactly 8 months, to the day. The speed and aggression with which this cancer destroys is hard to comprehend! She had surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and temodar. This may sound odd but before I take my last breath, I want to know what causes this cancer. Every specialist my mom was seen by all agreed that her cancer was caught much much earlier than normal. Yet nothing made a positive impact. Trying to understand the cause is like the biggest, or highest priority of things on my bucket list. It’s already odd to me that my extended family, on both maternal and paternal sides, seem to have a strangely high rate of illnesses involving the brain. Trying to wrap my head around the cause is my own personal mission. For anyone who has GBM or has a loved one with GBM, I truly hope the outcome for your situation is better than what I witnessed. Regardless, enjoy every minute you can. Don’t allow yourself to get in a position where you look back with guilt or regret. Take every opportunity to remind that family member how much you care for them!

I have AA3 in the left-most part of my temporal lobe discovered over four years ago when I was 28. Some of us that don't go fast slowly have our brain degrading while always expecting death to be a few years away young. I'm hoping something like this makes it faster than 20-40 years from now before it is too late for me and so many others. Thank you for all of the work you are doing. It will happen someday and it keeps feeling closer and closer.

Dr Linda Liau , a foremost neurosurgeon , UCLA has been studying glioblastoma for her entire professional life and is currently engaged in a clinical researching DCVax-L which has been very effective in extending life for those patients. Some GBM patients are still alive after 10 yrs. The process requires tumor samples from the patient & frozen under a specific protocol, to create a vaccine derived from the tumor cells. It is currently approved for compassionate use in the UK as clinical continues. The clinical is expected to finish very shortly. Known data has been very encouraging.
