I was aware that the recession was due to the housing market and the main reason was that banks issued loans to many people ( avg qualify); but was not aware of the bond markets involved. Good information

There's a movie called BIG SHORT. explaining what really happened in the 2008 crisis. CDO,Tranches,Ratings, and more financial terms will be explained by famous celebrity. Fun part is few ppl took advantage in the early years(2004-2006) from the housing collapse that was brewing. Makkaley kandippa paaka vendiya padam !

Hi ..i have a doubt please explain us....the bond owners should be the owners of the mortgaged houses right? Then when default happened..tje bond owners should have got the mortgaged houses instead of the junk bonds. Why they( the pension funds and lehman brothers) did not get the underlying mortgaged houses ? So why the loss happened..atleast theu should have got the properties.We are missing the elephant in the room here.

Yes, the bond issuers ended up owning the foreclosed homes. But it is not their business to manage homes. When the original owners were evicted, which could take up to 2 yrs, the foreclosed homes were not in a usable state at all. Price of the homes already plummeted 50%. Add another 50% off for a foreclosed home. They ended up with homes that is worth in pennies for every dollar they borrowed.

Person A has 50% probability that he will not pay the loan. Person B also has same 50% probability. Combining both (A+B) will also have 50% probability of not paying loan ((50+50)/2). How it can reduce to 25% in this case?

Probability of two independent events A and B is given by P(A)*P(B). If you roll one dice, what is the probability of getting 1? 1/6. If you roll two dice, what is the probability of getting 1 on both? 1/6*1/6=1/36. Makes sense?

@@InvestmentInsightsTamil thanks for the fast reply sir! Let's flip the numbers. A has probability of paying 75% and so B. Combined paying probability =0.75x0.75 = 0.56. Combined not paying probability = 0.25x0.25 = 0.06. So combining two ppl will reduce the probability of not paying as well as paying. Feels like I'm missing something here, because probability of an incident occurring + not occurring should be 1. P.s: sorry for the repeated questions.

P(A and B paying) = 0.75*0.75 = 0.5625 P(A and B Not paying) = 0.25*0.25 = 0.0625 P(A paying, but not B) = 0.75*0.25 = 0.1875 P(A not paying, but B paying) = 0.25*0.75 = 0.1875 Total = 1.

Could a 1929 stock market crash happen again? it's took more than 25 years. if so, what one should do with MF investment. People may lose their job and they cannot invest on dip. Any strategy?

Though the chances are very less, no one can say that it cannot happen again. You should have equity allocation in your portfolio depending on how much you are worried about it. Say you have 50% allocation to begin with and if the market goes down more than 50%, then you can potentially increase your equity allocation. It is easier to say that than practically do it. How many people increase their equity allocation when the market has gone down by more than 50% and also when they have lost their job? They will be at their lowest point in their life at that moment. Takes lot of courage to do this when it actually happens.
