Thank you for this very informative video. I'm a lawyer in Switzerland and as part of a competition, we are working on a case of replacement of a Francis Turbines which are suspected to be defective. In that context, a lot of questions are raised about manufacturing process and quality standards. At 1:51, it says that there is a meticulous and systematic control of quality before the actual manufacture. Does anybody know if there are any (publicly available) manufacturing and quality standards ? And what are the quality requirements and the quality tests implemented along the building process ? It could have been any number of things which caused the turbine to fail. The raw materials i.e. steel alloys could have been compromised coming from the mill, The welding of the turbine and casing could have had been bad for numerous reasons. The engineering of the turbine could have been incorrect for the site conditions (head and flow). The installation of the turbine and generator could have been faulty. Rocks and other debris could have entered the turbine intake and destroyed the runner / wicket gates. The mode of failure will most likely determine what happened and who is at fault. There are engineering and material standards that must be adhered to in the design and fabrication of turbines which are pressurized with potentially catastrophic consequences should something fail. Any reputable manufacturer of hydroelectric turbines is going to adhere to these standards (ASME, ASTM, ISO, etc.) as well as non destructive testing (NDT) of all critical components. I say this as someone with an engineering degree who has worked in the metal working field for a decade.
