Because Revelation 5:5-12s Branch was written in 90AD it was after Jesus had ascended so he has yet to manifest. Read the earliest Catholic writers, like St Ignatius of Antioch (died 108, ordained by the apostles) and Justin Martyr (died about 155. Both martyrs actually). I believe like they do. You won’t find deeper lovers of our Lord than our saints. That said, most Catholics haven’t learned and experienced the riches of their own faith. Sadly, like the Jews, they were given a wonderful heritage of faith, but it hasn’t been received into their life experience. Like a gift never opened. A.W. Tozier, an Evangelical, wrote a book filled with beautiful Catholic insights. (THE PURSUIT OF GOD) . He just omitted to mention that they were by Catholic saints, lest he lose his audience. We can learn from and enrich one another. We worship with some Protestant music. Most Protestants have sung ancient Catholic hymns by St Bernard of Clairvaux or “Faith of our Fathers” by Fr Faber. We love and serve the same Lord! As for “praying”, again, I believe there is misunderstanding. We worship only God. Most Protestants, due to a recent development of the English word “pray”, associate this exclusively with worship. That’s not what we do. We ask our brothers to pray for us (as scripture exhorts). It’s right to intercede for others, right? (What we’re doing here for Israel!) Believing that there is only ONE Body of Christ, made up of all, of those on earth and in heaven, we feel free to ask our perfected heavenly brothers to also pray with and for us. (We honor them as our heroes of the faith, but never worship them). True, asking for their intercession is part of our oral tradition, but we consider scripture as the written part of tradition and want to obey St Paul’s exhortation to hold to both (2 Thess 2:15 & I Cor 11:2). Rev 5:8 and 8:3-4 show that those in heaven participate in presenting our prayers to God. Why did God choose to insert these heavenly friends in the intercessory process of prayer? Perhaps their greatest joy, part of their heaven, is helping us in prayer by interceding. Maybe our intercession, as a “kingdom of priests” is a heavenly thing? Grace and peace and everything enriching be yours.
