Alongside housing minister Steve Clark, Ontario Premier Doug Ford held a press conference in Toronto on Wednesday regarding the province’s housing crisis - going on to acknowledge the controversy surrounding his government’s recent and “biased” Greenbelt land swaps and development plans.
Before admitting his team needed a “better process” and claiming his government will “implement 14” of 15 recommendations by Ontario’s auditor general regarding the Greenbelt, Ford emphasized his priority to develop not only more properties, but affordable ones for young adults and immigrants across Ontario.
Developers in Ontario, however, supposedly had direct influence over the province’s recent decision to extract lands from the Greenbelt and received “preferential treatment,” according to an explosive report from auditor general Bonnie Lysyk earlier Wednesday - a report which showed the Ford government began working to remove protected land as soon as it won re-election.
According to the auditor general, the owners of 15 parcels of land removed from the Greenbelt could see the value rise by $8.3 billion.
As a result of the Ford government's Greenbelt land swaps, opposition leaders and journalists are calling for the resignation of Ford, Clark and the minister’s chief of staff who supposedly drove the project.

Folks, let me tell ya. It's not about my friends and donor developers making billions on something I had control over. It's about homes and families, rainbows and gumdrops. Folks I promise to never do what I did, ever again. But I don't regret it. Because some family will have a home. And my developer friends will have bigger and better homes. Because folks that's what Canada is all about. Affordable family homes that are built on land that friendly developers flip in a couple of years and make billions on.

What are you talking about.. that's the issue in Canada. Is there is a supply issue. Not enough supply to meet the demand. Ppl are willing to pay a million for 3-4 bedroom family homes. If ppl are willing to pay it will artificially inflate prices.

Doug ford is so out of touch. Make it easier for actual people to be able to buy homes. When you can kick renters out to increase your rent profits but double almost triple prices. There is something wrong my foes is so Out of touch with the real world

Has anyone looked at the options available? I haven’t heard much about that. I hear that in Vienna, over 60% of the people live in social housing that is owned by the city or not-for-profit cooperatives (the local government decided, decades ago, that housing was a human right and so ought to be kept affordable for all; the rents are just a fraction of those in comparable European cities…)

@@MobyShamu there is enough approved building space outside of the Greenbelt, apparently, the approved space outside of the Greenbelt is the size of Paris. Also, we need the Greenbelt because it's the best-growing land in Canada. edit: Most people won't be able to afford the massive houses they're going to build. And the Con government was told we don't need the Greenbelt, we have plenty to build on already.
