Rules question: I don’t understand your explanation regarding the Area Effects (7min mark). More specifically, why the one enemy is not affected by the targeted area because there is no line of sight to that enemy due to the wall. It seems to me the same could be said about all three enemies . There is no line of sight to any of the three enemies as they are all behind a wall. I just can’t figure out why you only apply the line of sight rule to only one enemy and not the others. I would be inclined to say none of the enemies could be targeted by the Area Effect card as none are in line of sight of Hatchet. Thank you
@redsaberdude4 жыл бұрын
at 6:45 make sure to notice that the door has been opened. so you treat that hex as if there was no wall there. which means the rightmost edge of hatchet's hex can draw a line to those two vermlings's hexes, but not the third one because the non-door wall is still in the way. does that help?
@linkmastr0014 жыл бұрын
The right corner of the Hatchet's hex can have a line drawn straight to the right corner of the two Vermlings he mentions he can see, without crossing/touching a wall. The "wall line", for lack of a better phrase, is only the bottom line (i.e. bottom-left corner to bottom-right corner) of the Hatchet's hex, which doesn't extend to the right corner of his hex. Does that help?
@pierre-danielbourgeau65154 жыл бұрын
Tricky hexes! I see it now. Thank you.
@michaelgoshorn4762 жыл бұрын
This seems like the most anti-themetical rules I’ve seen in this game. I can see requiring line of sight and range to throw the “grenade” or other explosion, but to require each hex in the explosion/area of effect to also be in LOS just doesn’t make sense. If I throw a grenade around a corner it’s gonna hurt whoever is there if they are in the area of effect even if I can’t see them. Weird rule.
@Cornchps8273 жыл бұрын
Question about line of sight: from my understanding so far is that if you can make a straight line between anywhere on your hex to anywhere on the enemies hex it is a success. But at 7:10 you mention an example that makes me question my thought process. Can anyone help?
@WatchItPlayed3 жыл бұрын
There is a double line directly in front of the attacking characters, so it cannot see through that. However, beside that is an open door, and it allows me to draw a line from where I point with my finger, to the edges of the hexes I'm saying I can see.

Thank you RS for your amazing videos. 😀 I'm playing this scenario now and I have a couple of questions if I may: 1/ Does an attacking hero still have disadvantage if its target isn't adjacent to it but another enemy is? 🏹 2/ If the player(s) get to keep their gold after a failed attempt and can just try again, wouldn't that make getting gold too easy? Just focus on looting, fail, try again, rinse and repeat? 💰

1) Nope, just if the target is adjacent (you'll find this covered in the first video). 2) That's not really a rules question, and more of a design question, so can't really help there.

Quick Questions to "The Big One"@6:23 It says in the rulebook: The character can perfom a ranged Attack 3 on all enemies in the cluster of seven hexes, so long as at least one of the depicted hexes is withing range 2. Does this mean I have to have line-of-sight with one enemy, or just one hex and and I can attack an empty hex. And even if I can just hit one with range 2, I can hit everyone else who is in said cluster even if they would be at range 4

Question regarding the range attack: Let’s say the range attacking Vermling is more or less surrounded by the heroes and they are all adjacent to the vermling. The Vermling can move 1 space to move away from all the heroes to get rid of the disadvantage. However, that one hero the vermling would still be stood adjacent to happens to have the lowest initiative of all the heroes. Does the Vermling still attack with the disadvantage, or does it choose to attack one of the other hero’s without the disadvantage?
@WatchItPlayed3 жыл бұрын
There are enough combinations of movement/focus/advantage, that I can't really say with absolute certainty what the game intends, but in this case, I would rule that the monster attacks the target that does not cause it disadvantage (because if moving does not cause it to lose disadvantage, then it will not move in the first place).

Watch It Played I’m sorry but in the video it seemed like you only went over the case when an enemy card needed to be flipped. I’m wondering when it was already flipped. Perhaps this was implied, but I wondered if some enemies from the previous room already had their turn, do the new ones still get to go. Seems like the answer is probably yes.

@damnitschmolt92054 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think push and pull were changed from original Gloomhaven.
@brother_oak4 жыл бұрын
Yep - in the original both monsters and characters had to push/pull the full amount if possible (or not use the push/pull at all). In JOTL the monsters still have to push/pull the full amount if possible, but the characters can choose to only push/pull some of the distance
@toomanybarts4 жыл бұрын
Chris Ashton so has this rule been re-written for the Big Gloomhaven? (I have both but am starting with JOTL).
@brianflansburg89344 жыл бұрын
Jaws of the Lion has fewer mechanics and a number of simplified rules. The maps also tend to be smaller. A lot of complexity in Gloomhaven has to do with specific card text and sometimes how it interacts with text from other cards.
@TheMexicanSuperman13 жыл бұрын
Could you explain 7:23 again? You couldn't just shift the damage area to be a upper corner hex and damage that one Raider who is currently unreachable? In other words, do you HAVE to have line of sight for all your targets when using that card?

So I saw that you answered how you had LOS at ~7:15 - I had to come to the comments to understand that, thanks! Quick follow-up: Since the closest enemy is in an adjacent hex, your comments directly following would indicate that you should get disadvantage on your attack on him. BUT, in this case, your LOS technically must go through another hex to get to him, so could you say that for the purpose of that attack he is not adjacent, or does the LOS not really factor in?

Great videos! Two questions though 1. Basic actions, can you use both cards to move 2 hexes each and thus ignoring the one top and one bottom rule for abilities? 2. When looting, do they mean your whole turn? Or can you move two with one card and end that "card turn" to pick up the money and then move with your other card as a basic action? Watched your video and read "learn to play guide" and also checked "glossary" but couldent find the right answer.
@WatchItPlayed2 жыл бұрын
1) Yes! 2) This just means that the looting happens at the end of your turn. Once your characters turn is over, if the space you are in contains loot, you automatically get it. The rules says it this way (Page 15 Learn to Play Guide): "at the end of each character’s turn, that character automatically loots their current hex."

Great tutorial, thanks. I do have 2 questions though, I can’t find specific references to. One, when using just the basic attack ( the little corner number), I’m assuming you have to be adjacent to the enemy because there is no range given, and two, if you run out of monster ability cards, just shuffle them and start that stack over as necessary?
@WatchItPlayed Жыл бұрын
1) Correct! 2) There is a shuffle icon on the bottom right of certain cards in the attack modifier decks and monster ability card decks. If a card with a shuffle icon is revealed during a round, that deck’s discard pile should be shuffled back into its deck at the end of the round (you'll find this explained in this video series, but I shot this long enough ago I don't remember exactly where).

Hey George, very good question! I do my best to answer all rules questions on the games I cover, but for specific targeting and movement of monsters in particular cases I'd suggest checking the rules forum for the game on BoardGameGeek or the publishers website. I hope you can find your answer there - have fun playing!

@13:07, it was mentioned that there are two separate rooms and that you don't activate monster cards if there are no monsters in a room. Theoretically speaking, if we went inside the 2nd room while there are still monsters in the 1st room, does it mean that we won't activate a monster card for the monsters in the 1st room? And if there is only 1 monster type, does that mean that monsters in other rooms won't take their actions, even if all rooms have already been revealed?

Quick question on negating damage: if you have no cards in the discard pile and you are yet to act, meaning your two action cards are still on the table, are the cards that you have yet to choose from for the next rounds "in your hand"? Or is your hand effectively empty and thus you cannot lose one to stop incoming damage?

Can I push/pull a monster to an adjacent hex? For example, I am next to a trap and monster, and the monster is also next to the same trap, can I move it laterally into that trap? It's not moving the monster hexes closer and farther away from myself, but keeping the same distance between us. Thanks!

Hi Rodney! Great guides, thanks a lot for those! Two question before we go further to scenario two over here. 1. Can I choose to use just one cards action and therefore spare cards that else should have been discarde? Or MUST I do both cards actions on my turn? 2. When I have the action that says move 3 (or whatever), do I need to move all those steps or can I choose to only go 1, 2 OR 3 steps?

1) You must use both cards. 2) You may move UP to the value shown.

Thank You Sir! Not only am I impressed about the fast responce! After all, its a vid that have been up here for 6 month. I am also very greatful, I will stay tuned to this channle for a long time! Thanks Lord Rodney! ;-) Well just one more clarification then, at 5:37 You talking about a third option as I understand it? First I can do the action and the card is lost (due to the symbol) or I can do the basic move (since we here talking about the bottom half) and then I have the card in discard pile. But then You say at 5:37 that we can just skip that action? What about the card then? Is it still on hand and not in any pile (discharge or lost)? Those that means I can skip all the action for that card and the card is not a in the discard pile that I should shuffle and pick one for the lost pile? This was why I wonder about the 1 question above?

Why do the coins respawn upon losing the scenario if we get to keep what we looted? Where does it actually say to add the first two #1 cards to your deck after the second scenario? I can’t seem to find where it’s written ... and what if a still-unused ability deck happens to get mixed up? Maybe use the 3 digit number at the bottom and reference a chart on bgg, perhaps? I think of these tragedies because kids lol.
@WatchItPlayed4 жыл бұрын
It talks about the #1 cards at the end of the previous scenario (in the small print at the end, if I remember correctly). And yes, if the cards get mixed up, just put them back in order based on the small numbers in the corner. But also, in that small print section, I think it reminds you of the names of the 2 cards in case you did mix them up.
@heathercheeseman8013 жыл бұрын
I’m having issues grasping the monster movement. So in your example- the monster has 1 move and there’s a trap in between the monster and hatchet. However, 1 move would put the monster adjacent. Does the monster move onto the trap to attack? I know the monster changes its focus to the other character much further away. Does the monster move 1 space towards the focus character? Or does the monster ONLY move when they will be adjacent to a character (like in scenario 1)? Does the monster not move at all because the trap is there?
@WatchItPlayed3 жыл бұрын
Hey Heather, I'm not quite sure which example you are referring to (I give a lot of examples in the video, sometimes times tamps are best). That said, let me try to summarize some of the rules from the manual, with some extra notes from me, to see if it helps with your questions: At the start of any monster’s turn, regardless of what the monster is doing, the monster will find a focus. The monster’s focus will be the enemy it can get in range to attack using the least amount of movement. If multiple enemies can be reached in the same amount of movement, the monster focuses on the tied enemy earliest in the initiative order. Finding a focus is not dependent on line‑of‑sight or whether the monster can actually get in range to attack an enemy "this" turn. That's important, you don't HAVE to get in range of the attack, but it will "try". If a monster is performing a ranged attack, it will consider this range when determining where it can attack from. Otherwise, even if it is not performing an attack at all, it will focus on the enemy it can get adjacent to in the least amount of movement. When determining what is the least amount of movement, the monster will find a path that goes through the fewest number of traps possible, even if that lengthens the path considerably. Monsters also factor in the extra cost of entering difficult terrain when finding their path. Only if there are NO possible paths (given infinite movement) to get within range of its focus, will it not move. Does that help?
@floodkevin47162 жыл бұрын
Try watching again, he covered it. It would move to the next focus. Not to a trap.

Hello, one more question: assume the second room is not revealed yet, the Raiders have an initiative of 40, Hatchet has 60. First Raiders in room 1 move, then there is a Hatchet's turn and... he reveals the room 2. We do not flip the monster ability card (as there is already one active, in room 1 we have some alive Raiders), and what do the Raiders in room 2 do? The initiative tokens show they already made their move, as Raiders in room 1 did, but Raiders in room 2 should also move in the same turn as they were revealed. Should we move the initiative token of Raiders below Hatchet's and then move only the Raiders in room 2?
@WatchItPlayed3 жыл бұрын
I'll be honest with you, I'm finding this question confusing. Sometimes, complicated situations are hard to get across in text, and would be easier to explain with the board in front. Perhaps watch that section of the video again and see if it helps clarify for you?
