6mm Wargaming has many detractors. But I would humbly suggest they are overlooking several major advantages of a much-maligned scale. Whether it be, cost, space, speed or range I think everyone should take another look at 6mm.

Due to Little Wars TV I have discovered 6mm and have all the figures for the battle of Isandlwana and the three major battles of 1066. I still like my 28mm figures but 6mm has a place on my table as well.

I love 6mm for all the reasons you describe. Another great reason is if you want to start a new period, you don't need to bribe or bully a mate into building an army to oppose yours - you can just build and paint both forces in no time at all. The negative, in my totally subjective opinion, is the seemingly "default" game being DBA, which I think is absolute garbage. Funnily, a lot of regular DBA players moan about it too, but just carry on playing it cause it's easier then trying to convince half a club to learn a couple of other systems.
@MiniatureAdventuresTV

I always end up painting two armies, and your correct in saying its a lot easier in 6mm. I've never played DBA, but then I usually adapt existing rule-set's for 6mm and/or solo games and see what happens.

I got into 28mm.... I'm completely out of space. I also have a bit of gamer add, perhaps another way to describe it would be "new game greed" constantly thinking to try a new game. Now I have to much stuff that I'm not even sure I want anymore. If I ever find a way tp sell any of it I would switch to 6mm as the space savings, reduced cost and ease of painting sounds great.

Well said mate! I took my part of the game you played in at Joy of 6 in a holdall, on the train! I don't think I could have done that in 15mm. Also we had two Brigades a side in that game which is impossible to do with a figure scale larger than 6mm on the size table we used - I reckon it'd have to be at least 4 times larger.

So much easier to carry! I've recently run a 15mm demo game with my French Foreign Legion stuff and that just about fitted in two RUB boxes...plus nearly a dozen other boxes for terrain, movement trays, buildings etc 😆 For a 6mm game I'd have got the whole lot in two boxes.

Great video Lee. You are preaching to the converted here. My first ever army was a Donnington 15mm Early German, followed very quickly by Heroics an Ross WW2 German, both of which I have had for over 30 years. I love Baccus and bought a large Samurai army, but to be honest I love my Irregular stuff. Again, have been supporting them for over 30 years. Whereas Baccu are more detailed, I find the Irregular blocks super easy to paint. One of my latest projects, just finished was 6mm Italian wars, where the cavalry and skirmishers were Irregular. Everything else was 3D printed. J I simply shrunk from 28mm and 10mm to get what I wanted. 6mm is awesome. My table is the same as yours so we can easily play big battles in 6mm.

Hey Big Lee! You are tempting me and causing me to rethink my opinions! Of course, growing up, "God's Own Scale", of 1/72nd (Airfix) formed the bulk of my collecting... and it still does! But larger encounters in the same space is very appealing. One of these days, you'll have to cover storage... not only of the miniatures... but all the terrain and buildings that go with them! All the best!

I am committed. to 15mm. Because I began painting them 40 years ago and see no point in replicating the armies in 6mm. Having said that I regularly play with my friend with his 6mm armies, and have great games, especially when we play Large Napoleonic Battles using our highly adapted DBN rules that we call WTF! because I have a French Corps, and a British Peninsular Army I have just completed a Russians army to compete wit otm hallway through an Autri-Hungarian Army and have yet to begin painting the Prussians. PHEW! it's a chore and a half! My point? Well if I could turn the clock back, and the variety of figures where available back then, I would go for 6mm. Why? Because I like to to very large campaign battles and I just do not have the space for a 20ft table! You could easily do Waterloo or Borodino on a Makeshift 9ft table with room to spare, I detest cramming figures to the table edge! Where's the strategy in that? A bonus is, 6mm figures do not break the bank! You can swifty create armies of your choice even if you are unemployed, or retired like myself!

I agree that 6mm are easier to paint and look good on the table,but kinda disagree on cost simply because you need more figs per base to get that nice look. Example: the. ACW Rules I use have 60x30mm basing for 6mm, I use 12x15's and it fills the base and has a nice massed look. I would need at least 2 or3 times that number for the same effect with 6's. I think that cuts into the cheaper argument a bit. Especially if you take advantage of sales and discounts. Perversly I think their great for small scale games where the pbasic stand is and platoon or squad. Anyway great question as always. Good Gaming👍🤞

I especially like 6mm for ww2 gaming. I have nearly two hundred GHQ micro armor tanks/vehicles. I play Command Decision so one tank/vehicle is a platoon and its nice to get full sized battalions and divisions on the battlefield. I have given some thought to Baccus but the shipping prices to the states is quite high and actually makes 6mm less of a bargain unfortunately. I also factor in that I am more of a collector and painter for fun than I am a gamer so I want more detail but still get the mass effect and I can get that with 15mm or even 10mm for that matter. However, that being said, if I ever get back in the war gaming mindset I will strongly consider Baccus 6mm and hopefully they get a better international shipping price otherwise its very unappealing unfortunately because I love 6mm.

Been using 6mm for may years. We have played Sword Beach on an 8 x 6ft table using entire British 3rd Division with US assets on one side V full German Division on other in one day using 6mm, plus Waterloo, every English civil war battle ever fought, Lutzen 1632, Gettysburg and many more massive battles all played in a single day. If you want to play the actual battles and get a proper feel for what it is like to command the armies you won't get this at 15 or 28mm ever unless you wanna spend over £1000 on the figures and then have the table to play such games. I love how the larger scale gamers still snipe at 6mm without realising they are missing the point...... work it out for yourself.

I like the pose options of 15mm & 28mm when I put forward a skirmish line and I like sh Brits advancing. I’m not sure about using double ranks. I know it looks better but that doubles the cost/number of figures to paint and to maintain the look the number of figures per rank must also be doubled so a battalion must/should have 24 figures per rank. My AB figures are based 1 rank of 2 figures in line. (an 16mm X 10mm base). What is the feasibility of a 5.33mm X 3.33m base to maintain scale. I don’t think I could base 2 x 6mm figures on less than 10mm wide base

Adler do marching, advancing and skirmishing poses, in British, French, Prussian, Austrian and Russian, in both early, and late period uniforms. Leon also does ranges for the Spanish and minor states. I base x2 ranks of 6, for a total of 12 figures on a 30mm base, meaning I have small battalions with 36 figures, medium battalions of 48 and large battalions of 60 figures. These look fabulous, and allow me to use most rulesets, at 15mm scale, including Black Powder, LaSalle, General D'Armee. With sabots I can also be Napoleon from Marengo to Waterloo, on a 6 x 4, using Blucher rules. The extra figures, don't take longer to paint, because the painting area is much smaller, and despite all the extra figures, it still works out cheaper than 15's

The table size matters, yes. You mostly can´t expand your home. I always paint too extrem in 28mm and that uses a greatamount of time. 15mm works faster and 10mm even more. In the smaller scales the temptation for too many paint layers drops. 😆 One of my next projects could be 6mm...
