Glue chipped glass technique. No sand blaster required!

This glue chipped glass technique can be done by anyone and requires very little space and minimal investment in equipment.
Unlike my previous tutorials, this glue chipped glass technique doesn't require the use of industrial tools like a sand blaster or vinyl plotter

@@johnniepassmore5341 the silver paint is Krylon Looking Glass. The black is Hycote Matt black. I bought it because it was the cheapest but any black spray paint will work

I must agree with you. Dave Smith is without any doubt the finest gilder in the world. I have known Dave for 30 years.. We met at Fine Gold Sign in California. That was 30 years ago. We exchange photos of the breakfasts we eat. I will send Dave a photo of an embossing tool I made about 30 years ago. Will request he send it to you. It is made from 2 pieces of old bug rake. Wired to a bit of bamboo. I liked it because it was easy to tuck into tight areas. the pattern was much more diverse than yours. I do love the patterns you make. You can look up 4 videos I made. Gold leaf tips with Joe Balabuszko. Dave likes them. I would appreciate any critique you make.

I have done a fair amount of glue chip work. Not huge, but enough to learn it well. This video is so helpful for people who do not own a sandblaster. It opens the door for curious artists. If you mentioned the requirement to not overheat the glue, and the fact that animals will eat glue fragments , and suggest people wear dust masks, it would be a bonus. This video is terrific in so many ways. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I am now off to dig out my dremel tool, vinyl, and

I love your work, and you make good videos. The diamon bits are great for for grinding and achiving the whites finish, but there is also the White pink green and grey grinding stones that may give you some nuances. There are also some abrasifs rubber tips (used in jewlery for polishing) that can lightly unetch the Glass. Thanks for all the knowledge that you give us.

Hi. Thanks very much! I have used the pink and blue bits but they grind down quite quickly so I prefer the diamond bits. I haven’t tried the pink and blue bits for glue chipping though so I’ll have to give it a try! :D

@@toddburtonart mine doesn’t have a brand that I know of. Size choice is completely down to what size pieces you want to make. Mine is an sbc420 and the internal measurements are 121 x 57 x 60cm The main thing is that you get a compressor that’s good enough to run it

Great work Sir. I'm a custom painter and happened to stumble across your channel. What a trip, as a custom painter I use the same tools as you but I apply them to motorcycles and custom signs using automotive paint. I'm going to try doing a glass sign. Actually get a blaster from Amazon for 50 USE garnet and open blast using a good mask. Garnet doesn't produce a dust. I set up my 1st for 95.00 and borrowed the neighbors compressor

Fantastic. I was a bit surprised that the mirror spray worked. I tried something vaguely similar (without the etching and glue-chipping a few years back) and the paint sort of dissolved the vinyl. It was kind of melty and peeled off the glass. It might have been the Rustoleum mirror spray though. Anyhow, thanks for making these. :)

Hi The Krylon is good but it has limitations. It dissolves enamel paint so you have to mask the areas of the sign that are already painted. The rust oleum mirror effect paint is pretty much the same. @@happygilderIt's just such an impressive art form. Many people have told me "yeah, so it's a sign so what?" And I always answer; "Well, then YOU go ahead and try to make one that looks good. It' HARD work!" One thing I have to ask you though, if it's alright? The paper with adhesive you cut the patterns and letters out on, does it have a specific name?

I now know what I will be doing for my first project! Have you heard of Alclad Chrome Paint? I have seen a lot of people using it on models and it is really close to chrome. I have wondered if it would work on glass to make a mirror better than the Krylon Mirror Effect

Instead of a Dremel, could you use sandpaper to "roughen up" the glass? How thick is the glass that you normally use? Awesome videos! Just watching all of your videos and they have got me really excited to start a new hobby.

Hi, acid etched glass it too smooth so the glue doesn't grip to it.

Thanks very much! I back up the glue chipped areas with spray paint. If you do it with a brush it'll seep into ant areas that aren't perfectly applied to the glass

Hi Mark. Yes exactly that :) The glue is stronger than the glass so it rips the patterns as it contracts

Etching cream will definitely give a more even finish, but it won’t glue chip because the results are too smooth

you can also buy diamond grit burs in different grits plus you can also use diamond pastes in different grit/micron sizes on a polishing buff to help change the shading levels as well all using the dremel so its a really handy device. I'm just curious - can you use anything besides hide glue for the chipping?? - its very hard to source from where i'm at

The glue I use is called 'Liberon Pearl Glue'. You can buy it on Amazon in the UK

Great work. The border of the letter E is perfect. Did the vynal mask have that exact border for you to follow or did you do that freehand with the diamond tipped grinder? What temperature do you need to dry the glue? Thank you.

Thanks Albert! The vinyl mask creates the outer border. I'm not sure the exact temperature for drying the glue, but it's more warm than hot

I don't know how I missed this one...? I have a rotary tool; but you've something I don't, artistic talent. I could completely tell what that was when you finished. If I'd attempted it, at best it may resemble a map of Poland if I were lucky. So I'm wondering, could you glue chip on chemically etched glass perhaps?

Unfortunately glue chipping doesn't work on chemically etched glass because the finish is too smooth for the glue to grip onto. I reckon you could make this one no problem. All you need is a set square and a knife ;-)

Here's a tip, hide glue glows under a UV light. You can see all the details by using it and also keeping track of your waste for our 4 legged friends. In my studio I use a huge uv light to confirm cleanup. My pomeranians thank me every time lol

Hi Mark, yes it can and it’s best if you do it on the back of the mirror. It takes a bit more effort to get through the backing paint but it will work the same :)

Hi, I'm not sure if it's gold leaf. The tiles were there when we moved in so I don't know anything about them. I've never gilded tiles myself but I imagine it will work the same. You'd just seal it with clear lacquer and then rub the excess gold away

Hi Johnnie. Armour etch won’t work because it creates a smooth surface so the the glue won’t grip to it. You can use the rotary tool in your house. It’s not a messy process :)

Thanks Paul for showing some basics here. This looks look a good project for me to start with 👍. I'm still trying to get my hands on the correct sort of hide glue. Something I was wondering, if you apply hide glue on glass without using a stencil, then cut it to shape at the jelly stage, will it chip only where the glue is applied, or do you need make like a score line to stop it chipping over the designated edge? If you know what I mean. Hang on, I think I've answered my own question - I guess it should chip only where its been etched!!

This is definitely a good project to get started, and not a lot of tools required :) You always need to trim/score the glue, otherwise the chip will carry on through the edge of the clear areas

Hi Paul. I was just finishing up a sign that I made for a friend's birthday. I had painted the colored part with one shot enamel and then sprayed the looking glass spray over the chipped part and over the back of the one shot (basically the reverse of what you did) and the paints reacted and lifted the one shot up. Should I have used a hardener with the one shot? Any info would be appreciated.

Hi Myles, sorry for the delay in responding. Krylon is brutal on enamel but you can get away with using it. I always double up on the coats of enamel and spray the Krylon in really thin coats. On the occasions where it lifted the enamel, I use a q-tip dipped in cellulose thinner to rub away the affected area and then repaint it.

how would the chipping be effected if you etched in a design into the chipped area..?....say etch in a spiderweb design inside the chipped area before chipping...would the chipping reveal a chipped spiderweb design somehow..?

Mate, just a quick question; I saw the sand blast cabinet in the background. I've only owned or used large industrial sand blaster for panel beating. What size cabinet is that? I've made a couple small address signs, but I've been asked to do some larger works for office signs, etc. Thanks ... also I've used a "Paasche" Airbrush Sandblaster as I have one from my college years doing jewelry classes and found it worked on a small scale. Some years ago I was asked to do a reverse image on glass like the old pub signs in Australia in the 1930's. The image is painted on a glue paper, floated on gelatin like you would with Gold Leaf. I have repaired two while in the States, so it'll be fun (I hope). If you can find one here in Aus they can fetch over 30 grand!!!. I'll email you the process after I start the next one. You have been an inspiration Mate, I can't thank you enough, bringing it back for the world to see. Now with a desk top cutter and Corel Draw or Adobe Illustrator, you can do some quality magic... Thanks Julien! I've added a link in the description now. I strongly recommend using this particular brand because it's the best I've come across, even if there are cheaper pearl glue alternatives. It's not an affiliate link btw :)

Hi, I used the microwave to reheat the glue, but it was on the 'Defrost' setting instead of the normal microwave setting :)

Thanks!! I use Liberon Pearl Glue. It's a UK product so if you need a non UK product I'd recommend asking on the facebook group. There are lots of people on there from all over the world on there who are having success with glue chipping :)

Howdy! The glue I use is called 'Liberon Pearl Glue'. It's easy to get in the UK but quite expensive anywhere else. I would suggest asking on the Facebook group. There are lots of people having success with glue chipping from all over the world, so someone on there will be will be able to help you with a supplier :)

I saw someone on KZfaq just scratch the glass roughly for the glue to grip onto and he got great results. Are you sure "sanding" or etching the glass so precisely and thoroughly is a nescessary step? OR is scracthing only possible with special types of glue?

I’ve never tried it by sanding or scratching but I’m sure it works just as well. I don’t think you’d be able to be as intricate with the designs as you would with a sand blaster or dremmel though

@@happygilder : Ugh ... can't find the video I mentioned. My brain found it hard to accept that a few scratches would give glue the same grip as a fully sandblasted or Dremeled surface. Sorry I'm not sure what that number means. I've used Rabbit Skin Glue, Chipping Glue, and different brands on Pearl Glue. My favourite is Liberon Pearl glue but the others worked fine, they were just much slower to chip

Can the same effects be achieved if i don't have a dryer or heat source. Does it need heat to chip?

@@blakewilcox313 The heat source speeds along the chipping process but it's not essential. As long as it's not humid where you are it will chip in a warm room. Might take a few weeks though

what's artificially activating the chipping process, is it heat or is there a humidity component, too? would allowing the chipping to happen if just set aside for a week or two make a difference in the pattern?

35% humidity and the hide glue being 140 degrees. Proteins align and hopefully it ferns. It's all science

@@scotthendricks79 ah, gotcha, thanks. one video series the guy puts them in a box to control things, but his aren't how-to videos so it's a mystery of what exactly he's doing. our friend here sets it on a heater of some kind, but hasn't mentioned humidity or proper temps that i've seen. someone else mentioned that left alone with no controls at all and it will naturally chip, but that could take up to three weeks depending on the ambient conditions.

@@manlymcstud8588 it's heat and humidity, the glue dries and boom. My box I built gets to 16% and 101 degrees F. Using no lights. It's 24x48 and takes a average piece 36hrs to fully chip using a 1 to 1.5 glue water ratio.

No tempered glass won’t chip because it’s stronger than the glue. I always use plate glass

Hi Paul, I'll start by saying Love your work, and your will to teach others is admirable BUT when etching glass with a Dremel you should ALWAYS wear glasses and a mask!!! Even w/ a wet technique glass powder can get in your lungs and it will never leave - - Safety First! Take care, Kind regards

As a lazy person I find myself wondering what happens if you don't trim the glue after it gels. If the excess glue is on top of vinyl it shouldn't do anything to the glass underneath. The only point of failure I can think of is if it causes the glue on top of the glass to not adhere and chip correctly. Any experience with this?

The trimming process sets the boundaries for the glue to retract. If the glue is retracting in towards the etched areas, then there's less chance it will take a piece of un-etched glass with it :)

@@happygilder Paul try this, make your design then add a 3 to 4 mm boarder around it. Take it and blast up to the 3 mm line. Then apply your Hyde glue carefully and you don't have to cut anything. Plus if it goes over anything less than 3mm it pulls that up and boom, you have a bright line ready to go. It hardly ever 98% chips past that. Makes projects go faster.

Oh i use oracal 651 non water adhesive so if you chemical mirror it holds up. Aluminum oxide and garnet work with it. I've never tried anything else.

Acid etching won’t work for glue chipping because the etch is too smooth. The surface needs to be rough for the glue to grip on to :)

@@happygilder I started a new job in Oct 2021 and we have a sandblasting booth in the workshop! I hope to get a chance to use it to try glue chipping. I was explaining the process to a fellow employ yesterday. And we were wondering what they would have used in the 1800's to mask off the glass. Do you know? I'm sure they cut the designs by hand...no matter what masking material they used.
