A large part of an organism's complexity is not encoded by its genome but results from post-translational modification. Glycosylation, or the addition of sugar molecules to a protein is an example of such a modification. These sugars, or glycans, are often complex, branched molecules specific to particular cells. Cell surface glycans determine human blood types, allow viral infections and play a key role in tissue inflammation.

Great explanation Wonderful presentation A few highlights 1. Compared excellently Genome, Proteome and Glycome 2. 5' and 3', N terminal and Carboxy terminal with Non-reducing and Reducing terminals of complex carbohydrates 3. Yet another imp is conserved region in glycans to bind to proteins across species as that of conserved domains in proteins and conserved seq of nucleotides in DNA 4. Blood groups are due to glucose derivatives from UDP. O group trigalactosamine, A group with tetra and B group again tetra with galactose. 5. Immune system recognises subtle difference within them Great

At 11:20 you discuss the bodies ability to assemble or manufacture the other 8 monosaccharides from Glucose. I hear the term gluconeogenesis in nutrition information pertaining to the bodies ability to make glucose from fats. This is why glucose is not on the list essential nutrients. Is this a misunderstanding on my part or is there conflict of beliefs in the academic community on this matter?

@@patldennis Yep! GNG is a dire straights dynamic, starvation, it is not sustainable. A fat person will die still fat - if they don't eventually get dietary sugars. The liver can't provide enough sugars to make the fat we need as well sugar to do the many things we need, much less run a mile.
