It just kills me that so many good GM engines are gone. One in particular was the 4.3 liter V6. I have owned two , my current one is in a 2005 Sierra 1500. Great on gas, good power and reliable as hell. Shame they killed it, but that is GM.

We've seen large numbers of 4.3 die from oiling problems. You haven't been able to find a running one in a junk yard around here for years. Don't understand why as it's a sawed off 350 so it should run forever. But it doesn't.

I'm struggling to understand who exactly the 2.7 appeals to. It makes decent power, but under considerable more stress than the 5.3. Stress is the main killer of engines. The 2.7 has to work harder to achieve the same results as the larger options. Which stunts it's life and ironically makes the gas mileage only marginally better than the V8s in the best case scenario, and often it ends up being less efficient. It being the cheapest option is literally the only thing it has going for it, but if the roughly 3k you have to pay to get the 5.3 is enough to send you over budget, why the hell are you buying an almost 50k truck?
@jeremsgarage

The 2.7l Is designed as a truck engine from the ground up. It's better than the v8. It's components are stronger, its torque is more useable, and is by far a better towing engine. It is designed with many many many "diesel" features. here is a link to help explain this more. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gLKomKWr186zeIU.html Thanks for watching!

Like you, I have had almost no issues with my 2.7 T4. It limits the towing weight some, but otherwise I think it drives better than the V8 because the torque comes on a lot earlier in the torque curve. I have 83k miles on mine, and the only issue I have had is that the emissions charcoal canister went bad (which is an extended warranty item on my year of truck). I have only done scheduled maintenance. With how I use my truck, I wouldn't trade for the V8.

I agree. My father, a mechanic, told me, 30 years ago, that a quality, well built, 6 cylinder is plenty of engine for most vehicles including full size pick-ups. He said that the only reason for a larger engine would be for higher towing capacity. I'm really looking forward to the numbers, over the next 5 years, when it comes to how these overstressed turbo 4s are going to last in mid-size and full-size trucks. That engine is being asked to pull a lot of weight. That info is what we're all waiting for. I think the industry should just go back to the tried and true straight 6, and just build it even better.

An inline 4-cylinder DOHC 16V crossflow head configuration is much easier to keep cool than a V8 configuration. The radiator and coolant capacity is similar to the 5.3 V8, so the 4 cylinder DOHC will stay considerably cooler than the V8. A 2.7 L inline 4 has the same bottom end, crankshaft bearings and crankshaft strength as a 5.4 L V8. Actually the 4 cyl crankshaft would be stouter than the 5.4 V8 because with only 4 pistons to connect the crankshaft is mechanically stronger. GM has used forged pistons and rods derived from diesels in the 4 cylinder turbo, ensuring a stout bottom end for the power delivery. To date the 2.7 L 4-cyl turbo has been utterly reliable, while the V8's in 5.3 / 6.2 sizes have had failures due to valve train issues! Ford made a major mistake in using a 2.7L V6 turbo. A 2.7 L inline 4 is a much stouter engine design than a 2.7L V6, because the 2.7L V6 has the weaker bottom end of a 1.35 L 3 cylinder! In the 2.7L size, the 4 cyl is a much better choice for making lots of torque and power over the mechanically weaker V6. I've never been a GM fan, due to many personal issues with GM products over the years, but this 2.7 L turbo looks like a bright spot for GM, provided GM management is smart enough to build on it. I seriously doubt GM can follow thru on the 2.7 promise, due to GM's history of regular management stupidity!

Nice truck! I like the styling really well on the newer model Silverado trucks. I just bought a '21 Honda Ridgeline about 5-6 months ago and I absolutely love it. Of course, lots of folks love to hate the Ridgeline - which I'm really not sure why since it doesn't compete with the F-X50s, the Toyota offerings, or the RAM and Silverado offerings. That said, I hauled a very heavy dual electric recliner from the SC coast to WNC and didn't have any trouble hauling it - even up the very steep gorge entering the mountains. It's also done really well hooking a trailer up to it to haul my garden tractor to the repair shop and back, and it hauls my garbage to the dump when I do my fall and spring cleaning. I don't own a boat and I don't live on a farm so I don't need a truck more suited to those purposes. In ECO mode on the highway (and driving nicely) I've gotten 31 to 32 MPG. I really can't complain about it. It's all the truck a suburbanite like me needs.

I pull 8,500 lbs, 36 ft long trailer, and nearly 12 ft tall at 2,000-2,200 RPM at highway speed. While getting 9 MPG. Empty I can get 25 on the highway. It had a 10k km drive from canada to new mexico and back, holding 120kph (70mph) consistently on the hoghways through the whole trip, scorching heat wjth 4 people and plenty luggage. also towed a 7k lb+ dump trailer with dirt and mulch in it multiple occasions, and tows my 5k lb camper. Has yet to skip a beat, the engine is no issue, and will not be in my forseeable future. I have experienced ZERO stress through the engine. The transmission is obviously the weaker point in these trucks, but maintenance is key. Also the multi gate lockout: you need keyless entry for that feature to work. Removing the drawbar is a good thing to do. The damage to the truck frame when it's left in with some rear end collision is extensive compared to it being removed and the vehicle could take the hit squarely on the bumper. Also if you ever walked into one in a dark parking lot it can be quite painful so you're being thoughtful to others by removing it.

I, for one, really like your video. You are a down to earth person that tells it like it is. However, I want to hear what yo have to say when the truck hits 50 or 60 thousand. The problem with turbo charged engines is most people do not know how to care for them. Go to the supermarket, pull into a parking space and shut the engine off without letting it cool down for a minute or so. Yeah, I'm an old school truck driver, but some things hold true for todays modern engines. My 96 Chevy K1500 5.7 has almost 300k on it. I seriously doubt the 2.7 Turbo will hold up that long. But, I hope it does. Proper maintenance will go a long way towards that kind of longevity.

Thank you for the Kind comment! I appreciate you sharing your experience. Yes, these Turbos's need to be driven and maintained well. I've been thinking about doing even stricter maintenance on my vehicles because both my truck and my wife's MKC has a turbocharger. Her car has 111,00 miles and change. We've put over 70k miles on it with only a few sensors going bad. But I stay up on it's maintenance too! There are several examples of these trucks hitting about 130k plus and I found a few for sale with north of 150k miles. Kind of hopeful that GM has a winner here. Take care friend! You did a nice review of the truck. A 2.7L 4 banger with a turbo? Good luck down the road with that turbo. My daughter has a Buick Encore with a turbo 4 banger. Guess what-they replaced the turbo twice already and it only has 70K miles on it. Fortunately they had a good extended warranty! They are planning on getting rid of it and buying their grandma’s 2014 Town n Country van this fall. It has a super reliable V6 in it, not a stop-gap 4 banger. But hey, maybe you won’t have to do anything to it in the next 25,000 miles? I’m sticking with my low mileage 04 Hemi Ram. She runs flawlessly and does what she is supposed to for gas mileage and it’s a 4x4 with trailer towing package 3:92 gears. It does 17 mpg on the highway and 14 in town.

Nice review. Plus you live in Tennessee so you must be terrific! We had a 22 Silverado RST Z71. We used it to tow four vehicles, and I was quite pleased with the 5.3. We were pulling a 1978 Thunderbird from California back to the Tri cities and they’re were times when the entire dropped to 2 cylinders. Overall the trip mileage was a respectable 19.8 Due to a family issue, we ended up trading it in. The dealer had an 18 Sierra SLT on the lot. It came down to money-he offered to sell us a truck similar to yours for not much more money. But at 60, we decided to step back and have it fully loaded (moon roof, heated/cooled seats, etc) But it’s good to know the 4 cylinder isn’t a flop

Thing is, we go racing most weekends throughout the summer, our tow truck is a 96-Z71 Chevy, we throw the camper on the trunk lode it with tools and equipment, car trailer, load the car, load it with jacks tools spare wheels and tires and more tools bikes and toys, been using this truck for this for decades, 500'000 miles, flawlessly, and if we happen to take this truck not loaded it will get 22 mpg, that, the overworked 4 cylinders will never do, though I will admit, there has never been another truck built that will do what the mid 90's Chevy's can do, they set a new bar with that truck that I'm sure will never be reached again.

I have had more trouble with babied used vehicles I bought in the past vs ones used as they were designed for. That 4 cylinder really does the job of the 5.3 easily. A nice wide& low torque curve is such a nice benefit. This motor in the Colorados/Canyons will make them beasts! Haha. I wish you all the best!! 😊

@@londen3547 it’s all stats and physics. You clearly don’t understand. It has 310 hp 430 lb ft of torque. 80% of that torque is available at 1200 rpm and Carrie’s through the rev band. The 5.3 makes 355 hp & 383 album ft of torque. 80% of the torque in the 5.3 happens at over 3,000 rpm, but Carrie’s through the rev band. The 5.3 is pretty torque laden down low, but a turbo gas is much like a turbo diesel and generates a lot of torque early. The physics says the rest. If you haven’t driven & used both, then don’t speak. You really aren’t aware of what you are talking about. It not gonna do the work the 5.2 does, but definitely equals the 5.3 and is going to be better at lower RPMs than the 5.3. It has more stresses, but they built that the same as they do a turbo diesel. It should last just as long, if not longer. It’s not my preference, I prefer the 3.0 litre 6 cylinder turbo diesel that is even more powerful.

Bought a new 2020 Chevy Silverado 1500 0:22 RST 5.3 Z-71 black Midnight Edition loaded in November 2020. Am 72 and hadn’t had a GM product since I was in late teens. Loved that truck and had serviced at dealer every 5000 miles. Had serviced at 10100 and wt 10500 dropped a lifter. Didn’t have a problem with that and dealer fixed it and replaced all lifters in that bank. At around 17500 this July had an incident that seemed like the lifter thing but then it smoothed out and not issues. Got back home without a problem and then a few weeks later acted up again. Dealer had for couple days and said bad injector. Couple days late same thing. Dealer kept a week and said found a small crack in the head. Got back and couple weeks later did same thing. By this time had little over 20,000 and warranty running out November this year. Decided to traded it and went to trade for a Nissan Titan but ended up with a 2023 Maxima RS. Probably will never have another GMC product and I love the way they look.

Im 52 and never wanted or considered anything less than a v8 for a full sized pickup. Last November, life events necessitated a 4wd: job/ move up north where snow and ice are around for months. The truck the local dealership put on sale for black Friday checked all my boxes (and then some!) But it had the 2.7T. I decided to give it a test drive with an open mind.. I really was surprised how easy it drives. I thought id have to really stand on the gas to get it moving (like a 4 cyl s10 I once drove) but it was nothing like that. Very light use of the gas pedal gets the truck moving nicely. And if you stand on it, it goes...almost as quick as the 5.3 did in my '17 truck. . My primary concern or fear is all the technology and options that came on the '23 LT package having issues after the 3/36k warranty run out - so i bought the extended warranty. Time will tell if i chose well, but 3 months and 3500 miles into it, im completely happy with it.

As a retired certified CAT&CUMMINGS knuckle buster diesel engines are built heavier with better quality of metals to withstand the stress of turbochargers. I wouldn’t trade my 2010 5.3 Silverado for two of those trucks. They don’t tow nearly as well. They don’t have the weight. They don’t have the same rotating mass, so there is absolutely no way no matter what anyone says that they have as much torque. And there is absolutely no way that they will last as long. There is no way that a forced induction engine will last just as long as a naturally aspirated. Unless of course Toyota build it. A small four cylinder has to work much harder than a eight cylinder with twice the displacement. I just see it as more things to go wrong. Thanks for watching! Is your doubt based on any facts or first hand experience with the 2.7l? These engines have diesel technology in them and should outlast the body of the truck if maintained. I'm sure it will need some occasional maintenance items and wear items but the engine is built very very tough. TFL truck has some very good videos with the 2.7l engineers and you would be very surprised what went into these motors. As to the 5.3l... they are great engines but are still having the DOD issue with wiping cams out. The little dongle to turn them off is not a long term solution as the lifters can and do still physically fail. The best solution is to keep up on the maintenance and if really wanting the DOD gone to replace the hard parts. Which is a cool way (not cool) to spend 3k plus. Thanks for watching!

My buddy traded in his 2017 Silverado with the 5.3 for a 2022 with a 2.7l the dealer told them it was the same horsepower, more torque and could tow just as much. Maybe true but we took it snowmobiling once pulling my trailer with 2sleds, so maybe 2000lbs tops, closer to 1800lbs probably and the thing got like 8mpg towing that much and going up big hills felt like a struggle. Where as my 2016 Silverado with the 5.3l gets like 16-17mpg towing the same exact trailer and going up hills or passing a vehicle on the highway towing the same trailer is no problem. When I'm towing or plowing or using a truck for truck things give me a V8 burning good ol gasoline. Multi flex tailgate, give me a tailgate I can open without unlocking the truck every time and a latch instead of a button. Some time not long ago they stopped making trucks for work and started making trucks for the weekend warriors towing campers . Ild rather have a vinyl floor than heated seats. What I found with my 2015 Colorado is that GM actually tried to use too big of tire for the 200hp 2.5L; which was the same size tire used for the 3.6L. Including being the same tire circumference as the plain jane 16" wheels you saw most of the Work Truck Colorados with. The hallarioty of it is, with the 6 speed auto the 4:11 is still geared like a corvette of the 80's. You could still get 140 out of a 2.5L Colorado without the speed limiter. The final drive was ok if you were always driving on even terrain, but add hills of NC and it always used 5th gear 80% of the time. Engine just lugged too much in 6th even at 55mph. I cannot speak for actual numbers but I added a 25 mile trip to work extra, on a quarter of a tank. 245/65/17 from the factory wheel's 255/70/17. Just that little 3/4 change in circumference/gearing change alone made the truck much more enjoyable to drive, than always planning to gun the heck out of it up the next hill; to keep the same speed. I only lost -300 rpm off the top. But hey the truck is limited to 95 anyways. Also, with the old tires, I'd almost been disabled to pull anything. I'd definitely have to go smaller tire if planning to even pull a boat, no question. For around town Lowe's style delivery to my door, this tire size keeps the engine and transmission much happier.

Let me add this to my rant though. I am saying changing tire size because it is less painful than trying say a 4.30 or a 4.55 rear gear.... If you get my drift. But yeah the gearing is way too tall for everyday USA driving, for the most part.

The lifters in those can go bad, but its not as envolved as a 5.3 or 6.2 but it sort of is, the cam carrier comes off and you gotta screw with the timing chain. Also they're direct injection so the valves get extremely gummed up. And I've seen a couple of those engines go bad with less miles, but that's a rare case and there will be a few bad apples in any engine platform. The problem with these engines is the power comes from the turbo, so you have to get the rpms up to get power out of them, you don't have to push a v8 as hard, therefore the engine is gonna wear down quicker. Also don't follow the oil change maintenance recommendation, change your oil every 3,000 miles. If you don't wanna change it that often at least make sure the oil isn't getting too brown; and at least make sure your topping off your oil because GM has bulletin saying it's normal to burn a quart of oil every 2,000 miles.

Do a review after you put over 100,000 miles on it. A lot of us Chevy full size truck guys SERIOUSLY doubt you can put 200k on the odometer without having some major failures on the way regarding these 4 cylinder turbos in full size trucks that get treated like trucks. If you are just toting a few bags of concrete or few sheets of sheetrock and the kids around town, you aren't really working that turbo 4 cylinder very hard or doing a lot of highway cruising. If you are frequently towing a full size fishing boat or a trailer with a small tractor behind in on the regular, we can feel the review of this full size truck with a pint size motor can handle the normal wear and tear expected of a FULL size truck normally equipped with a V8. My 2006 Silverado crew has 262k on the original all aluminum 5.3L V8 engine and still working hard. I honestly was towing incorrectly on a regular basis and toasted the transmission at 176k and killed the rear end not long after. I am at least being honest. Many people I know put over 300K on these 5.3L workhorses in the 99-08 year model range(before the variable timing that messes up became common option). A lot of people I know who have passenger cars and small/crossover SUVs that are equipped with these 4 cylinder engines (with and without turbos) seem to be dying at about 120k-140k, especially regarding General Motors vehicles. The secondary problem the people I know who are having problems with these engines is that there is a supply problem. They cannot get the engines either repaired or replaced due to shortages we are still experiencing globally.

It is in the Caddy RWD sedan. I'm a Chevy guy and had a 5.3l before it. Many of us with these engines worry more about the trans than the engines. Thanks for watching!

@@jeremsgarage I agree with the transmissions...the 4L60E is definitely a "hold my beer" transmission as it grenades itself when pushed too hard.

Very, very good video. And yes, I always thought the Chevy seats were better than all the rest of the trucks. Thanks for the video.
