What GM is going to do is have EVs in all of their nameplates at different prices and markets. Cadillac and Chevy are rapidly getting there. So is GMC. Buick is going to be a bit later. If this approach works, the future is theirs. The Japanese and Europeans are lagging behind. Tesla fails to keep up with the current generation of EVs and has never had the interiors or overall quality. Mary makes sense and is easy to understand while Elon gets crazier all of the time.

The "Design Center" referenced is a large addition to the 1950s original on the campus of the General Motors Technical Center in Warren Michigan. That space was previously a parking lot for employees. Originally the space was used as a backdrop for publicity photography for new cars... with light poles and manicured trees in an almost courtyard setting. The 1950s through 1970s era was GM's pinnacle of design leadership. Numerous classic vehicles were produced during that era such as the Tri-Five Chevrolets, 1961 Impala, 1963 Riviera, 1963 Corvette, 1965 Coupe deVille, 1967 Camaro and Eldorado, 1971 Grand Prix, 1976 Seville, 1979 Riviera, etc. Then GM design went downhill in the 1980s and 1990s with the 1985 Deville, 1986 Eldorado, 1990 Lumina, 1992 Caprice Classic, "Dustbuster" minivans, Pontiac Aztek, etc. ...vehicles openly mocked for bad design. Mary Barra has turned around GM and made it profitable on a per unit basis... and she wisely dumped the money losing Opel, Vauxhall, and Holden brands. But the result now is a much smaller share of the American market...from once over 40 percent to approximately 16 percent.

I crashed my Toyota Echo. It may seem like that has nothing to do with GM or its future, but if Mary and her team don't keep in mind their role in the car market as a whole, they're going to have a tough time in the future. They need to improve their affordability and quality, so that they can have a strong used car market that advertises for their new cars. A strong used car market is what makes Toyota, Honda, and Subaru so successful. The car segment is shrinking every year because GM and Ford decided to focus on crossovers, trucks and SUVs instead. It's only a matter of time before people are no longer able to find an affordable proper car for their daily needs.

it's a cost issue for everyone, people aren't willing to pay $20k more for EV, when a hybrid does 95% of the job, until the price comes down enough, this will continue to be a problem, the automakers need to figure that out

@@danielzhang1916 The average sale price of a car in the US is over $47K. Some Tesla Model 3 and Model Y are below the average sale price, before the $7,500 rebate. Tesla has already figured it out, since Tesla is the only US manufacturer making a profit from EV sales. Tesla even opened up their patents so that other car manufacturers can use them to accelerate EV manufacturing to lower costs, but US manufacturers have not followed.

I've never owned a new American car, and in my search for a replacement vehicle I've driven several EVs in the last few weeks. The Blazer EV is the one I can't get out of my head. I had avoided it due to the somewhat overt styling elements inside and out (which I'm getting used to). But the content for the money and materials quality as well as the control layout really impressed, as did the strong AC front and back, and the solid, refined feel of the car on the road. I drove the base 288 hp, 279 mi range model. This is the first American-branded car I've considered in years (not counting the occasional thoughts of an F-150 that I really don't need). Great car.

It's so strange how these news organizations have these fluff interviews with GM/Ford about EV's, but give Tesla such a hard time when they're ACTUALLY producing EV's at scale. One doesn't have to be a "fanboy" or fanatic about Tesla to see that GM/Ford have been making a lot of claims they haven't even come close to materializing about the number of models they would release, the volume they would produce, etc. They're barely making any at all, but yet this "interview" gets produced that is basically just another marketing fluff piece. So odd. They have't even figured out how to make one without losing a ton of money yet.

"GM is up like 12% in the last ten years” - Lots of reasons for that, from overseas markets being unprofitable, to losing money on sedans and compacts for 25 years in a diminishing market, to poor reliability in comparison to Japanese vehicles long ago. Can’t pay UAW workers what should be because $120 billion of debt from the last 40 years. “We’ll go bankrupt…” , yeah because of poor design decisions and quality perception from 1996. I’ll give Mary a break on all of this - she wasn’t making the decisions that led to all of this, and I respect her for recognizing what GM needs to do to turn it around. The buybacks are some evil greed type stuff tho, Mary. So, anyway I look forward to see the new revolutionary vehicle designs and bold moves that’ll make Sandy Munro smile. Move on from the mistakes of the past, like 96 Chevy Blazer, and Lumina or 2002 Monte Carlo or Impala, or the Avalanche - I guess GM isn’t making any sedans anymore but what I’m saying is choose better visually appealing designs, (the new Colorado looks nice) better handling and suspension (teslas doing it) we all want to see GM thrive, you can do it Mary.

Problem with EVs is that in several countries the infrastructure is simply not there yet. Plus, the early adopters have bought them so now you are trying to sell EVs to the other 80%+ of the market. The challenge to GM is not TESLA or the other traditional auto makers but rather Chinese EVs. China has the capability to do the same thing to the US auto industry that Japan did in the 70/80/90s unless some form of protection is there. Personally, I am not in favour of protectionist policies so expect a bumpy ride. Just to be clear, the same challenges face Ford, Chrysler, VW etc.
