My dad worked for a construction company. Heavy equipment and they had trucks like this old gmc diesel and the mid 80s ford f700 or 800? Diesels. With a kenworth haul truck and a GMC General dump truck. I spent all of my youth out on the job with him being taught how to run equipment backhoes dozers and how to drive these trucks. Its been in my blood since i was born and thats why i am a CDL otr driver now. This brought back so many memories. That smooth diesel purr is the sweetest sound ever

Thanks so much for these two videos Jon I worked on these engines for a guy who was also my dads boss my dad wasn’t ever patient enough to turn wrenches full time so he just held the steering wheel haha but me and dad did work on some of these can’t be killed engines together when driving was slow and he needed hours good times…

And it fires right up. Love diesels. I've been looking recently at people who turn these into big pickups. I think that's kind of neat. Maybe it could be a one day rat rod build. That would be fun to see. As always, thanks!

I could say so much about what went on in this video like very well said and explained about just owning one engine also when I had one runaway on me it was my fault and I was green as they come getting my feet wet running overhead and adjusting the injectors my boss at the time new it and told me to have a phone book or 2x6 on standby this is getting long but one other thing I wish a truck box door latch would make those noises up here after sitting for years… I just got done putting POR 15 on my pickup to help stay the rust…

Simon from the uk here.... That was an easy cold start,not much of a challenge 😉. The road outside of yours is a busy one,normally don’t hear it much. Perhaps one day you could do a guided tour of all your property as I think it would be interesting and also the other holding compound. How is your son doing and his new house, as I’ve not seen any videos lately. Has he stopped making them.? Thank you for taking time out of your day to do these videos for us 😃

even with that old dead diesel fuel is really isnt smoking much. sounds really good. i have never had one with head gasket problems. looks like a good donor for one of your truck projects. i just bought a 96 ih 4700 with a mechanical dt466 and a spicer 6+1 w/ overdrive. it is just like this truck...needs too much work to be a cost effective good reliable truck but it has a great engine and trans. i think the transmission is worth what i gave for it.

8.2 had head bolt issues. Otherwise ok We had these in marine industrial use. I had a 6500 with a 453T Detroit screamer motor back in the 1980s. Also had giant v6 478 gas motor. Rare find today . GM made huge 60° V6 motors even a V12!
@jimmy_olds6 жыл бұрын
A local freight company I deal with has a few straight trucks with the 8.2’s. I’m not sure what year they are but they look similar to your GMC there and those trucks still make deliveries every day. Good analogy with your 350.

I run one every day with a turbo. 88 gmc tandem dump truck 8.2 detroit 15 speed. Run all day on 80 bucks. I haul 17 ton of gravel a load with it. Smooth running engine. Biggest problem I have is bolts breaking off that bolt the alternator and air compressor brackets on front the engine. Rough pavement cause most that I believe. That 8.2 will run all day holding 4000 rpm.

Looks like oil or something on the frame under the alternator, Is that some kind of pump running off the back of it? Engine sure sounds good, I could use a truck like that and I have a crane I could put back on the bed as well lol.
