The blue button has 3 positions. Low, direct and overdrive. Low gears can not be split. When in direct you can split by going in and out of overdrive. The button with the red lines is a countershaft brake. It helps get the transmission in gear when at a complete stop.

This looks exactly (red dash, black fuse cover door) on my 74 GMC 9500 that I drove for 6 years at Pepsi Wichita. 30 mph up hill and 80 mph going down...trails and tribulations of a Detroit diesel.

I drove one of these for 8 years, even the same color on the inside. 30 mph up hill loaded (80K) and 80 mph downhill. Freeze your rear end off in the winter and sweat to death in the summer. Pepsi Cola Bottling Company of Wichita, KS.

What you are referring to as a "3 position range selector" is the technical term. You are correct I shoudlve been more clear. I'm used to calling them a splitter I run an 18spd that's why I have gotten used to that. You are correct though. Technically that is the range selector. Most don't realize those trucks didn't have a range selector like the modern 9s, 10s, 13s, 15s, and 18s though. Suppose in reality they're more comparable to a super 10 with the concept of shifting.

One of the good old 13's with no range selector. Bet that's a fun one to drive. Nice shifting ain't many that can shift one of those anymore.

Man..that is some great sounding sheep!(:)) Clearly a Detroit Diesel. Reminds me of the old Crown Coach school buses with ten-speed or the old GMC Greyhound ScenicCruisers with four-speed.

@meringandan If done properly(key word here) floating gears is the best overall for the truck. No wear on the clutch, and no wear on the trans, however if you grind the gears the least little bit while floating over time you will damage the trans. Manufacture's recommend using the clutch to cover their ass's on the warranty! 12 years with a CDL and im an ASE Master Tech. I might know a little bit about this.. LOL
@msboomagoo
@msboomagoo 13 жыл бұрын
@tazztower44 The blue button puts the trans in either Low, Direct or Overdrive. When in Direct Drive ( the top 4 gears) you can use the OD to split them. Any yes it is a Jimmy. In some cases a "Screaming Jimmy."

Very cool! Is the button with the two red lines going to it the Initial gear engagement switch?? I know most 13 speeds with a 3 position splitter have that.

@nachos1990 I drive a 13 speed in a 1981 ACCO, mechanics have shown me transmissions dismantled for repair it does create excessive wear on gears they can tell which drivers use the clutch and which ones dont. I got into the habbit of using the clurch it is better for the gearbox even though you can change without the clutch long term not a good idea ,you can still get over a million Km out of a clutch used sensibly.
@nachos1990
@nachos1990 14 жыл бұрын
@meringandan Of course every manufactacturer recommends that. Double clutching all the time actually puts more wear on the clutch and in a unsynchronized transmission it is not neccessary.

Very smooth shifting, can't find many drivers that do as well as you anymore! I'm 16, and would love to get my CDL, so I could get a nice old GMC to restore and drive to shows. I don't know anything about shifting these things, and I got an automatic 4runnner (was looking for a manual for over a year). May I ask did you learn how to shift w/out clutch from lessons or did you learn it on your own? Not sure what you do for CDL. Thanks

Ok, so my question is...When you have the blue button in the low position, does that mean you are in low range? And if you are in low range then, what does the button do that has the red airlines running to it, I thought that was your high/low range button. My dad had a tranny just like this in his 1971 Transtar 4200...and I always wondered why there were 3 positions on his button on the side of the shifter but also a button you pulled and and down for high and low range.

as per the CDL test, you need to double clutch each shift. As per my test, the examiner was really really easy to work with and probably could have gotten away with out clutching, as per how I learned, I just got my license and was offered a job, rode with another driver for 2 days and was told to have at it, took a few weeks of practice and allot of stress and now I barley even touch the clutch. might suggest learning and or testing in a 10 speed if you have the choice

That has to be a more modern transmission....I put an older 13 speed in my 96 freightliner and I encountered the same thing...could not preselect when upshifting. I called Eaton and they told me that any 13 speed before the early 90's was that way.

@papabugs71 i pulled it apart the other day because the bell houseing separated from the engine and my clutch granaded all caused by the input shaft bearing going out witch was caused by a bad harmonic balancer, but any ways i pulled it apart and scraped out all the metal shaveings and put a new input shaft bearing and now she shifts just fine really tight shifts and no back lash or rubber gear syndrome when i push in the clutch or let off the gas any more. and yeah i pushed N instead of M lol

@msboomagoo my SN465 needs that when you stop at the light and try to put it in it grinds you have to wait about 5-10 seconds for it to spool down mostly does it when its hot

@msboomagoo I think what you meant was an 8V71. There was no such engine as an 8-71. The Detroit Diesels went 6-71, 6V71, 8V71, 6V92TA, and 8V92TA. The "TA" call sign in the 6V92TA and 8V92TA means turbocharged and aftercooled.

@DRNEGOLICIS It's a SM465 not SN. You need new synchros. Very strong tranny. Nicknamed the "Bulldog". SM: Synchro-Mesh 4: 4 forward gears 65: rated for 650 ft. lbs. of torque at the input shaft.

probably a stupid question but i was wondering..is a splitter something like a hi/low range in each gear?..i noticed that you just moved the selector a few times instead of actually shifting...did these old 9500's go by the name "jimmy"..i love these gmc's...thanks for sharing

Usually 1 through 5 and shift ranges and go back to 2nd and split, 3rd and split, 4th and split and 5th and split. 13 unders were 1,2,3, shift ranges then 1 through 5 then shift ranges and 1 through 5 again. 18's were a 9 speed with a splitter between main gears.
