I moved out of the Front Range into the middle of the southern Rockies back in 2016. I was initially worried whether I would need to replace my 2008 Commander for another Wrangler. Silly Man! There's no place that I am afraid to go up here in my Commander. Even Hwy 69 in the middle of a full on blizzard ( had to a few times since the cities are all far away now ) Almost 200K now and still running like a top ( kept those maint. up ;0)

Tbh if a commander had solid axles it'd basically be an xj. Maintains a classic jeep look. I personally like them. They're disliked among a lot of the jeep community and idk why. They look like jeeps!! All they need is solid axles!

The Suburban is a 4x4 that is meant for snow, dirt roads and other slippery on-road conditions. The Jeep is meant for Offroad conditions. There is a big difference.
@Mitcellie10 жыл бұрын
Dude.. Im sorry but a 4x4 is way more offroad capable than an awd. Going into any offroad situation with 4x4 engaged can be a risky one. Experienced offroaders know that a high amount of situations are better off entered in rwd, and if you start slowing down, you engage 4x4. In fact youll notice that the high majority of awd vehicles are actually not meant for offroad at all. Just about any jeep truly intended for off road is a 4x4. Most of the time in awd only 2 or 3 wheels are engaged anyway, the reasons the suburban had a harder time getting up/down 1. Heavier overall, suspension, drivetrain, motor, chassis, the body is pure steel 2.its much longer 3. Its torquier, but with all the excess weight of a heavy suv going up a steep hill its getting robbed of about 50 percent power. Basically all im saying is that the jeep is originally intended for on road purpose, and all the things you named off that the 4x4 was for is more for awd.
@JamesFeragola10 жыл бұрын
You do realize that the Jeep is a true 4x4 and not just awd right? Piece of It has front and rear lockers, the suburban does not so it's not a true 4x4 unless you install lockers yourself (mine had a rear locker but a front LS). I owned a 91 suburban with 35's and a 6" lift, that was built for Offroad use. I had to make it capable for off road use. I own a HEMI Jeep. It drives All 4 wheels, on the ground or not. The suburban with the stock drive train drives 2 wheels, thats it, and if 1 or 2 come off the ground, your done. The Jeep is dramatically more capable offroad and has more power and torque by far. Bone stock the Jeep can go almost anywhere my Suburban went more comfortably with better mileage.
@Mitcellie10 жыл бұрын
My bad, i didnt even realize the commander was true 4x4 until i looked it up yesterday. For some reason i thought it was an awd :/ not sure why.

Quadradrive 2 (at least these years Commanders and Grand Cherokees) have e-lockers front and rear muck like a Rubicon package Wrangler. You just can't select them manually, the computer activates them automatically.

Ill still take my 96 Burb any day. Good old Vortec V8 has a very high reliability factor. The Commander has a LOT more tech under its hood too. Its kind if like apples and oranges.
@wildbill23c5 жыл бұрын
Suburbans have a much longer wheel base, and are heavier and wider than the Commander. This is where a lot of the issues come in trying to wheel long wheel based vehicles, not that they're not capable they just get hung up on stuff that the smaller vehicles don't. Those old suburbans when setup properly would go anywhere, they were easy to work on, heck you could open the hood on the older ones and literally crawl up in the engine bay and work on them.

@spacerconrad11 жыл бұрын
Yeah, apples vs. oranges here. Too many variables, including the aforementioned traction control, as well as the nut behind the wheel. You can go a bit further and test a Wrangler vs. a Peterbilt on the hill. I bet some folks will crow about the Jeep's superiority there, too... different critter, is all. I've seen some 'burbs do some interestingly capable stuff on the trail, by the way.

@wildbill23c5 жыл бұрын
Same vehicle as the commander in the video just the smaller engine, it'll do the same stuff the ones with the V8's can do, just slower. The Commanders with quadra-drive just had the advantage of having limited slip front and rear differentials that the 3.7L V6 and 4.7L V8 didn't have...I believe quadra-drive was an option on the 4.7L V8 but not very common, course with some wrenching you could always swap that stuff over into either the 3.7L or 4.7L equipped Commanders.

@faaaaq11 жыл бұрын
Yeah. The jeep is ful of nice tech and modern stuff that puts it over the suburban. that doesnt mean the burb is bad. once they figured out how to get it over the hill the burb made it no problem, but the commander was composed as hell, very impressive. and Jacob, that suburban is WAY long, even compared to the bigass jeep, so obviously its going to lift less. and your argument is a fail anyways, since jeep did the same job with 3 tires much of the way ;)

I have a 95 suburban with a total of 5 inch's of lift (3 suspension, 2 body) and 1 1/2 inch spacers on each wheel. Honestly its how the driver handles the hill, because I've had mine up some way bigger climbs than this out in Kentucky. Muddier too. The jeep has the upper hand already because its lighter, but don't think that burbans are bad off road trucks either. They are very capable if a good driver is behind the wheel and its set up right.

@wildbill23c5 жыл бұрын
Don't forget the Suburban is about twice as long as the Commander LOL. That's one of the biggest issues of trying to wheel a full size truck, the dang long wheel base they get hung up easier and lose traction easier.
@tehagent132110 жыл бұрын
...its a C1500 2WD vs a 4WD Jeep. As far as Im concerned if the Burb can do the same things without 4WD the Suburban wins. EDIT: NVM I see its got 4x4 in other vids. Thiers a hierarchy of cars. GMC owns Chevy, Pontiac, and a few others. Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and others are together and used to be called Plymouth. You can see certain cars look almost identical. Pontiac solstice and Saturn Sky Subaru brz and scion FRS (which was built by subaru and Toyota together.) Etc.
