Smoke? With smoke it’s all in the color of it, Blue, blue/grey = Engine oil is entering the combustion chambers. Black = The fuel mixture is too rich White, white/grey = internal engine coolant leak into the cylinders or cylinder head due to cracks, porosity, a failed head gasket, a bad intake manifold seal, worn valve guides, or bad valve-stem seals VVT solenoid manages the valves’ opening and closing times to ensure that efficient fuel consumption is maintained. Any malfunction of the VVT solenoid is therefore certain to result in efficient fuel consumption. So if you notice a significant drop or increase in your average fuel consumption and smell of unburned fuel, it is very likely that your variable valve timing sensor might cause a little smoke, but it all depends on the color of the smoke, Hope that helped.

With me it just made my check engine light come on. My car was able to start and run fine. That's just my experience though.

Well qtreiner85, let’s go over some of the basics and start from there, The VVT solenoid is responsible for controlling the flow of oil to the camshaft. The most common symptom of a bad VVT solenoid is a check engine light on your dashboard. You may also notice issues like rough idle, rough acceleration, increased fuel consumption, or low engine power. The camshaft position sensor is responsible for telling the computer the position of the camshaft. The most common sign of all bad camshaft position sensor symptoms is that the car will be more difficult to start or not starting at all. As the camshaft sensor becomes weaker, it does not send the signal to the on-board computer and as a result, the ignition system cannot produce a spark correctly. No spark means that the engine will not start at all, So if you could reset and recheck the engine fault codes, most common faults for these would be p0010, p0011, p0013, p0014 It is also possible that you find a completely different code, like one for starter relay going bad, you stated it start that night, then no start in the morning. Was the dash lights all on? If yes, In your fuse box there is a starter relay, I have seen this issue in the terrains before, with ignition off, pull the starter relay, turn key to “ON”, do not crank it like you were starting it, all dash lights should come on, now re-insert the relay, and then give it a crank, I have had luck that this jolts the relay to go you home or the auto parts store. Unfortunately i ended up taking my terrain to the dealership, basically had to have my entire engine replaced, they had it for 4 weeks. And now it is back to doing the same thing where its burning through oil way faster than it should, its trying to stall and it will sort of jump. Then the check engine light came on, it said "Engine power reduced" and also "service stabilitrak" i added oil because it was about empty yet again, and was nowhere near needing an oil change yet. But that helped for the time being. I still have over 2 years of paying on this car. *facepalm*

On mine out of nowhere it just cut off at low speed you would crank the car up and it would just immediately cut off after that I still managed to make it to work for another week before I changed it but it got worse
