The five time supporting Gotham- this duo is actually the reason I got back into chess during covid. Sure queen's gambit brought it to the forefront, but Hikaru & Levy really made chess feel accessible with quality content that opens the chess world up to so many. Hikaru has said it multiple times so I don't think he ever feels bad about stating what he objectively thinks. Like he said, he doesn't try to lie on stream regardless of whether his takes are right/wrong. Btw, that lie detector video was filmed way back so his answer in that video is not up to date with his current opinion.

Hikaru clearly wants Levy to become a GM. He hopes Levy can become a GM. He doesn't quite *believe* that Levy will become a GM.

Remember that there is a 400 rating points bracket. So, say if you were to score 100% against only 2200s, your performance rating for that TMNT is 2600. The formula is Avg rtg opponents + 400 x [(W-L)/(W+L)]/total games played

2:24 the conventional wisdom, that I've heard over and over lately, is that opening theory does not matter unless you're hunting 2600+, and - furthermore - that everyone is playing sidelines now to "get their opponent out of theory." This is talking to high level players (experts - titled) at Marshall Chess Club.

This is a great point in general. However, both of his opponents in rounds 5/7 played openings which require high precision and don't have obvious plans whereas in Levy's game last night his idea was obvious and his opponent had to understand the pawn structure to have success.

I feel chess needs stories like Levy's road to GM. Hikaru commenting on how Levy is not likely to become a GM is adding to the underdog story and makes the games feel more personal. It is like watching Wrestling with the soap in between the matches adding a stake. If I was writing it, I would make the final GM norm be hinging on a victory against Hikaru, twice.

Why would a 2200 allow Levy to play the Caro? He has an entire opening course on it and has literally memorized all the variations. It just seems like a blunder from the very beginning.
