Stockfish says in this position, that the best moves are either e4, or Bf4, but not Bg5, it's ok move, but not the best, as you said significant adventage

What if they don't develop a pawn but simply move the queen to d7?

Hi , but the pawn comes in front defending the queen giving an advantage again

exf6 and your B is always safe. B can try to fiddle around in that area with the N or h pawn - but ruins himself positionally.

I can never understand Englund masochists. Of the 20 possible responses to d4 only g5, losing a pawn immediately, is worse.

@Llanchlo lol yet people always lose their queen or the game to me with it . I've never met anyone around my rating that could beat me in the Englund without flagging me

@@hikosama7321 TBF I have had some good results as B too. I sometimes try it when bored as it is at least fun. But my results as W are much better. However at my lowly level the Blacks who use it have clearly done no prep beyond move 2. Faced with sensible play, rather than panic, (e.g. NOT pawn exchange as in this example) by W they go into a trance and tend to lose within 12 moves.

Ok so he plays f6 and you trade off pawns anyway, letting him develop the knight. At which point you can either trade off the bishop, or retreat. How's that really any better?

@@IM_Metkobakarov I still don't understand how it's a "significant advantage". Seems like a very slight advantage at best.
