34:15 Yeah; My body has an annoying problem where it just won't sleep for more than an hour at a time (even though I wish something could let me force it to sleep for multiple hours like a "normal" human), but yet my dreams (which usually *always* happen when I sleep) usually seem to last days at times. I've come to realize this is just my mind giving me false memories during the dream to make me think it's lasted days when really, it's just teleporting me from scene to scene, skipping to points in time as needed.

Man thank you SO MUCH for this update! I was asking for it for a couple of weeks. Map got huge changes at this meantime - so huge that myself got puzzled from the additions made between last time i played it and the current state when you recorded this video... Well, some points about the additions and the video itself: 19:28 you can break the window to enter no need to that "workaround" (but in fact, a doorless room is something very... weird..) 27:11 this one you can break the window as well... 33:30 - I agree totally with the "waking in a dream within a dream", even the seamless transition was perfect to give this impression 38:22 i think this one is breakable too, if i'm not mistaken 38:47 i think i heard something while you was talking... 40:15 i love the fact that, even the sniffing being a stock gmod sound, makes you throw away your headset. This is the power of a well-made liminal/horror map 55:50 i don't think we can enter that white portal behind the curtains, i tested in non-VR gmod and cant enter either Sadly you just noticed the body at that new play area (in the hidden hole), but missed the ones right after the starting area (behind the slides, but you catched it on the first video) and in the poolroom that leads to the "holy" tower area (the one with copyright music). Also you missed the area behind the restaurant area (near 35:40 i think), it had alterations as well. By the way, i really like this revisitations, specially with games/mods/maps that receive notable updates. Hope you do more videos like this! And thanks again for making this one!

I really love these types of maps because they succeed so well at preserving the unique, primal atmosphere of liminal spaces - not only those that fit the "academic" definition, like hallways and waiting rooms, but also spaces that are evocative of temporal liminality through nostalgia and callbacks to our childhoods' cultural memory (no wonder the playspaces you mentioned are such a hallmark!). I feel as if it has become increasingly easy for "liminal spaces" to fall inside more conventional horror tropes and get a bit too contrived, like the Backrooms' levels. Maps like these show us why liminarity is not just the decade's flavour of stage for spooky creatures to hop out of, but a character of their own that resonates and makes us ponder about a happier, more innocent past. It's a very unifying and beautiful experience.

Liminal spaces 100% depend on your past experiences. But because this kind of bright and multicolored playground equipment spaces are so universal, they're the most popular. People have made liminal space image compilations based specifically on Hispanic / Slavic / Asian upbringings, and they're all pretty interesting as someone who didn't have those experiences.

The reason why people of different age groups and from different places can all feel the effect from the same liminal space is because it taps into one's perception of the world when they're a very young child. When you're age 2-5 you're imagination is capable and running away at a million miles a second, and this combines with having extremely little knowledge or understand of the world by filling in the blanks. You see a fountain or an empty office building not even really understanding yet what these things are, and your imagination fills in the blanks. The feeling liminal spaces gives one is basically remembering the sensation of not understanding the world yet.

A while back, someone did a Russian/Soviet liminal spaces video. It was just one of those slideshows with unnerving music, but meant to give the same feeling to Russians that most videos give to Americans. I watched it and, as an American, it didn't really work on me. I got the idea, but nothing there had that familiar-but-off feeling. But it did give me a sense of how the average liminal space video probably feels to someone outside my place and time. I would be curious to see a Japanese version, or a version from a third world country.

The scariest parts are when he's scared into actually _retreating._ That moment of *_"Oh shit,"_* is amplified by the ambience sure, but it's heightened even more by the fact that he _never_ actually retreats, and usually stays mostly calm, so when he _does,_ you know something real must be going down.

15:49 Actually no. The spawn menu has a tab that lets you clean the map of various stuff and one of them is for getting rid of flashlight spots, like what is being made by the flashlight when it glitches. Just don't click the 'clean everything' option by mistake or it'll completely reset the map. These options are found in the ultilities tab under user and admin cleanup. I really wish the original creator of that flashlight addon could fix that. It'd be nice but not going to hold my breath on it.

hehe. I love how at around 7:35 you get spooked by an antlion noise from hl2. Which likely also came from a speaker on the map nearby like all the noises prior. But like, of all things to get spooked by... Antlion noises? I mean, tbf when you see them pop up next to you for the first time in highway 17 in half life 2, it can be scary sorta and adrenaline rushing. Also side note, most of the sounds in the map are probably from Half Life 2, just my assumption given that the ambiance in that long semi~dark hallway with many different doors and whatnot, almost like a part of a mall, is literally the citadel ambiance from Half Life 2's last 2 chapters within the game. :P Oh! Right at 15:55, I have a suggestion for that. There is an addon on the workshop. Kinda old, but really handy. It's a COD thing, but basically what it does, is set a new spawn point for you as long as it isn't destroyed(which is very easy to do so lol.) also it lasts for as long as you don't place another if I'm not mistaken. so yeh. Heh, another edit just to say: Scared once by falling into the horror ball pit, and scared a second time by a creepy shower room at a seemingly dead end. Both involving sudden falling that you don't see until it's too late. Rip Librarian's poor heart. (one day it'll probably try and leap out on him from him getting scared so badly.)

Mate, with all the talk about Liminal Galleries I still don't understand why you haven't given a shot to old spaces, the map made by the same person who made void spaces. It's legitemately one of the best liminal maps ever created in GMOD. Exploring it in VR as I did, is truly incredible. I really don't want to join the discord to make a simple suggestion, but man, you are very much missing out on possibly the greatest liminal experience you could possibly have.

Those underwater windows around 15:00 make me wonder if those windows are designed to withstand water pressure, or if maybe there's water behind them as well. Also reminds me of a photo from a flood event somewhere, where someone's house actually seemed to manage to keep the flooding outside and they had partially submerged windows. EDIT: I just found out that there actually are normal-looking windows designed to keep flood waters outside the house! Neat!

I think I've finally pinned down why you running in these videos unnerves me so much. When I think back on all my dreams I realized I have never exerted myself, it's either that I'm encumbered by something and can't run away or I have no need to run at all. I've never had a dream where I jump or jog or sprint, nothing where there is a situation where expediency helps. Seeing an environment that matches my dreams so well with an action I would never do is so uncanny that it makes me incredibly uncomfortable.

I’ve heard lots of things about different people dreaming differently, like in colour vs black and white, but i only just now realized that i don’t think my dreams have sound. I can see in colour, i can smell and taste, and feel objects, or feel my own momentum as i move around in a dream, but it’s always quiet. When i dream of something that usually makes sound in reality, it’s like it still makes vibrations in the air that my ears detect and my brain interprets, but it’s like telepathy, i don’t hear it like i do when i’m awake.

same here! when people talk to me in dreams i don't hear it, but i KNOW what they're saying but i don't "hear" it. i will sometimes hear music (but then again for me music is both a visual and auditory experience, just synesthesia things) but that's about it. no speaking, no sound effects. the only person i've ever heard in a dream is my deceased brother's voice, and his presence in my dreams is a whole other eerie thing i won't get into unprompted.

3 minutes in so far. The concept of your dreams evolving is one I find so fascinating.. We all have had those weird dreams where we're in a specific place, fictional or not; And when you wake up, you want to go back. If you actually could go back, you'd find things consistent but also different or expanded. And I love the Lucid aspect of that as well, you are subconsciously creating these things whether you know it or not. And the more you focus on them, the more your brain fleshes it out, or emphasizes it. Like the rushing water he mentioned he hears in his dreams! Because he focuses on them out of fear, the louder it becomes until it becomes an actual concept of his dream.

An example of what I'm going at is the save of DanTDM's lab, I see what I used to years ago but everything seems off, there is none of DanTDM's friends and it is just me in the Minecraft save.

Sometimes my mind warps and changes familiar spaces almost beyond recognition. Yet, these dream spaces feel more familiar than my actual home. I have dreams like that a lot. My mind will take a base concept and warp it until it feels like I'm walking through some weird familiar fun house. Also I have what I now call "dream dimensions" which are those same dreams again but I usually get to see more and more of the dream (kind of like watching a TV show) and experience more of it. P.S. as a young person who watches your videos, I can confirm your theory on how liminality is seen differently depending on age.

i agree that dreams warp familiar places, when i was younger i had a dream where i went to a pool. it was normal at first until i walked into one of the bathrooms, walked out, and the door led to the same bathroom which then repeated and repeated. every time i walked through another door until eventually it opened out into this big, open, fenced in area, but still with the generic pool tile floor. the main thing about it was that there was a pole in the center of the area with a massive grizzly bear chained to it

32:51 a very well-telegraphed "jumpscare" as it were, but your reaction to it is great. I knew it would happen, the stains on the wall and ball pit itself gave it away, but was still hilarious nonetheless.

I like how the scripting can cause huge jumpscares, and how he got jumpscared _again_ by the slide woosh 😆 A cool thing to make a nonlinear map like this scarier would be triggers on a big, global and random-ish global timer (which could maybe be done in GMod, who knows...) like 7-10 minutes, playing sounds, opening/closing doors, or even better, slightly modifying the layout behind the visitor when they isn't looking (like adding little walls between sectors jutting out, adding blind corners straight corridors and rooms, so when they goes back they sees the corner and goes "wait, there wasn't a corner here, now that safe room isn't safe anymore!"). So depending on their speed and the path they take the visitor will get jumpscared in different rooms, and it won't be like entirely random because it's all on a timer so the scares lie in wait till a moment after the visitor drops their guard.

10:37 tbh it's the opposite out here. I'm in the Midwestern part of the States and a large amount of apartments feature these long blinds, while a lot of businesses use horizontal blinds

I'm in the northwest and those are hotel blinds. Other businesses use horizontal ones (if they even use blinds), as did every home I've ever lived in.

OK this is gonna be the start of your ARG about how your house is haunted XD because most of those sounds you said you were hearing I wasn't hearing in the recording like as in game audio but then the one where you actually took your headset off was the only one I actually heard as part of the game XD

for me, the most unsettling liminal spaces are those that resemble churches, sunday school buildings, and rural daycares. i have spent many years of my life in a religious town, and have a lot of religious trauma. i cannot remember much of my childhood in relation to church. when i see something that reminds me deep down of the churches i used to be forced to visit, it activates a visceral fear in my mind, a fear that nothing else can cause for me.

I've also had that feeling of the ground sinking and bouncing under you in dreams, though it's usually accompanied by the feeling of getting shrunk down into the size of a flea while what remains of my lucid brain tries to reverse it by force of will, and failing badly

For me, vertical blinds have always been creepy because the pieces of the blinds do not overlap completely, leaving space which has always made us feel like someone can look in😓. Growing up in the 80s and 90s, these were very common to find in residential homes, usually at a sliding door.

What you said about not being able to get your footing in dreams is similar to how I'll often dream that I realize I can levitate slightly and it's like of course I can how did I forget I could do that kind of feeling like you've described but then I can't turn it off I can't get gravity to work again maybe it has something to do with the fact that your brain has to reconcile the fact that you're not actually feeling your feet on the ground or the weight of your body as you walk so it makes excuses

I really like the point you brought up, that liminality differs from generation and cultural background to another. I've always had a strong connections to US culture, even though I am from Germany. We have relatives living over there and went to visit them almost twice a year back in the 90s and I consumed a lot of US cartoons etc. So a lot of the imagery used in liminal space games, videos etc. resonates with me. But when I talked to friends about liminal spaces, they didn't seem to be able to connect to the concept as much as I did. It would be interesting to see some 90s German liminal space media and see how it resonates with me.

42:55 Actually yeah urinals like that totally exist; weird latrine-style things made out of steel or stone, set into the walls of a public bathroom. They disturb me as well. I'm _pretty sure_ the Springs Preserve in Henderson Nevada has one like that in their public bathrooms, for "artistic" reasons. Personally, I think they just wanted to simplify a row of urinals into a single drain.
