As a gen z whose childhood game was minecraft, the ‘going back and finding something new’ feeling is sorta there but also sorta not. Because mc gets updates every year, there’s always something new and different to see when revisiting it after some time. But it isn’t really what you were talking about, because while it is still minecraft, it’s different from how it was before. To truly get that ‘nostalgic exploration’ feeling from minecraft, i would have to go back and play the version that was out when i was a kid. While it is possible to download and play old versions, the issue is that i didn’t just play on one single version! I played on and off over a few years, and my memories about the specifics are hopelessly jumbled. If i try to list what features were in the game in the “era that i’m nostalgic for”, i’ll end up putting down two features that never actually existed in the game simultaneously. Going back to any particular old version always feels very different from how i remember it, and the ‘nostalgia magic’ is diluted because of that. For a while i’ve wanted to make a mod that compiles together all of my ‘nostalgic elements’ from different versions; like mechanics, textures, sounds, blocks, etc. from not only different versions but also fantasies or even classic mods, into a sort of unreal neverland version of minecraft. Ideally the atmosphere would be changed to be dreamlike/liminal to the max, and herobrine would definitely be a feature. Not a feature listed on the download page, but one you might see in the corner of your eye a few hours in.

I’ve had Barnard’s door dreams, and the new room is an offshoot of the basement with a recessed floor with sofa seating. The room is always darkened, but those dreams don’t fill me with foreboding, rather, I’m always super stoked to go check out the new space.

This map always stood out to me because of the one vacant apartment. All the others are lit up, decorated, at least have the illusion of being lived in. Then you have the vacant one, door locked, lights turned off, quiet as can be. I was always irrationally afraid of that apartment and despite just being an unused living space, in an empty map with nobody but yourself, you start to speculate about this unassuming, blacked out apartment that you can't normally access. Who lived there, has it ever been lived in, or is there someone still inside? I love little additions like that in otherwise normal maps.

I think you definitely touched on why nostalgia and horror correlate so much. It is definitely in how you've changed, but also that in many ways because you're reintroduced to that same environment with a different context: you feel vulnerable. It's like returning to your hometown to find it empty, but yet looking just the same as you left it. Seeing where you came from does set off this sense of weakness, as it does remind you of what you used to be when you were last there. It does humble you in many ways, but in others it does creep you out. It's the thought of being younger, lesser, minimised that bothers us. When you add the "Bernhard's door" subtle context changes, that makes it even worse. It sort of makes you think "Wait, was this here the whole time?". It adds mystery and intrigue, which lets the mind run wild and add to the creepiness. On a sidenote: if my memory serves me correctly there were three main versions of the original map: hl_richland, which was a map for HL2 Multiplayer and used stock Half-Life assets, ttt_richland which used some CSS assets and had a bunch of areas set up for TTT e.g T rooms and stuff, and rp_richland which was a much larger map with more custom resources. That could contribute to your lack of memory of certain things tbqh

I honestly love your beliefs and reasons on environments influencing emotions and feelings just as much as your explorations. I think the topic of moods via setting is so interesting yet doesn’t garner as much attention. It’s super cool seeing maps that give me a range of different emotions, from dread to complete calm, from fear to cozy. And you just explain it so well, I often have difficulty expressing what I feel and the reasons behind it on these kinds of topics yet you do it so articulately and make it more identifiable, it’s quite impressive and it’s quite a big factor on what makes your content so enjoyable. Anyways, great video as always!

My Bernhard’s Door in a video game experience was with Super Mario Sunshine. I’ve been playing the game on and off basically my whole life(Was born in 2000, Sunshine came out in 2002), so naturally when I discovered a level I had never before seen(I was around 12-15ish, don’t remember what age exactly), it felt very surreal and dreamlike. From someone who’s has multiple Bernhard’s Door type dreams, it was a _very_ similar feeling, at least to the dreams that weren’t foreboding. I’ve since learned to speedrun the game, so I’m probably not gonna find anything new from playing it… however, I’ve learned to mod/data mine the game, which lets me kinda chase that high lmao

This really shows how your brain evolves from childhood to adulthood. Something as simple as running through a map and pushing buttons and opening doors is entertaining and all, but now its just... another map. The only thing that puts a smile on your face about it is the memory of how much fun you used to have when you were a kid. I agree with you, this is a wonderful overview of nostalgia and the human mind. I'm sure in hundreds of years from know humans will have a better understanding of how we feel the way we do about nostalgic things and even video game nostalgia (which I think will be very prevalent in the decades to come, as video games become more engrained in our society.)

I’ve recently remembered a liminal like dream (I had when little) where in it, I was playing STARWARS Bounty Hunter, and I had always gone to a particular location that would noclip me to some abandoned ball pit area. It was very ominous looking back on it. And it was one of those dreams I’ve had on more than one occasion, like I’d have it once every week I believe. I also remembered another recurring dream. I had always walked down this hotel hallway, and it always had a demon of some kind at the end of it. Again, I was very young when having this dream. But I remember getting closer and closer to it, and then finally beating and sucking up to it…then I’ve never had that dream ever again since. It’s kinda ironic, while this channel focuses on liminal spaces and such, it’s made me remember some dreams that were liminal space like dreams. I like this channel, it’s very interesting in the liminal space aspect. Keep up the good work Librarian!

Regarding 8:17 : I grew up with Fallout 3, sometimes I boot it up and just explore around the map, but there are times that I discover something new, like Rockopolis or some unmarked quest. Funny thing is that abandoned Vaults really feel like liminal spaces, Vault 106 (the Vault where psychoactive drugs are pumped through the vents) being the perfect example of this liminal-esque environment mixed with dreamlike hallucinations of the player's father and other characters walking down the halls. Ah yes, the Dunwich building also invokes that feeling pretty well, when you enter the offices in the daytime you can see the contrast between the sunshafts illuminating the desks and the darkness further from the windows, maybe it's just me, but it gives both a feeling of safety (standing near the bright windows) and a feeling of neglect and abandonment (from the state of the building itself and the lighting in the deeper parts of the offices)

My Bernhard's Door Phenomenon moment was booting up GMod for the first time in years when I was stuck at home with COVID and went to rp_downtown_v2. There's a few buildings there that I had just never really used much/at all while rping as a kid, and so being in a familiar place but exploring unfamiliar areas within it and with nobody around when I felt like I was expecting people to be there was an unsettling experience. I also absolutely feel that feeling you were talking about at the end where your past and present selves feel like they're clashing when you experience something that you haven't for a long time. Me and a friend call it Coloring Book Feelings because there was one time when when my depression was especially bad and on top of it I was transitioning meds and so in an effort to stimulate my brain and feel better we got some coloring books and doing something that I hadn't done since I was a tiny child just filled me with such a profound...I've never been able to accurately describe it, but it's like nostalgia but sad, but it hit me so hard that I broke down crying. And I absolutely feel that (not as hard though lol) when playing old GMod maps because I'm thinking about who I was and how I felt the last time I was playing on these maps and it just creates such a dissonance with who I am and how I feel playing them now.

I have been playing GTA III for more than half my life now, and booting it up again not long ago just to have a play around and listen to some HEAD RADIO, I stumbled upon a grave yard in the middle of Staunton Island... I have never seen this before, I had no idea this game had a cemetery at all. I know these streets better than the back of my hand, from countless hours driving around having fun not really doing the missions. And yet I have never seen this graveyard here before, and it was right in the middle of the city too, where I must have driven past it thousands of times without realising it was there this whole time Hit weird

That part where you talked about how you talked about how much you change as a person in between the time you don't touch something really stood out to me. I've gotten this feeling with games, or even just movies or series I used to watch in the past, because, I feel something a bit different that I wanted to explain. How you talk about the old view clashing with the new one makes me think of a recent experience I had coming back to something that I enjoyed a lot when I was young. Basically, there was this sense of, in a weird way, though how much different you are, how you're at the same time the exact same person. To me it was down to the enjoyment of it, the fact that me right now could enjoy this just as much or even more than I did when I was young makes me feel this undoubtable sense of how we are truly the same person deep down, even if we have changed so much.

I wanted to share one of the coolest experiences i've had in gaming and it happened on the ttt_richland version of this map. I was a youngin' playing TTT and at one point said "theres a place near where I live called richland lol" (in Pennsylvania) and someone else chimed in "thats where I live". I didn't believe him at first but I added him and started talking and it turns out it was true. We talked for awhile and he even invited me to his schools computer club; but it fizzled out. Just funny that this map was unintentionally named after a real life place and that someone who lived there happened to be playing the same time I said that. Thanks for reminding me of this.

8:20 Recently I've played Redout and started doing some of the tracks slow just to look at the environments. You tend to not pay much attention to that stuff when racing because you're going too fast for your brain to process anything other than the direction the track is sending you and how your racecraft is oriented on the track. One thing I noticed is that the underwater sections on many of the game's tracks actually don't have you driving through the water. There's a tunnel effect going on where the water is kept away from the track with some of invisible energy field though the game still 'muffles' your sounds as though you were driving under the water.

Why do I have a feeling that something bad is bound to happen just by reading all those positive comments for such a video? Strange.

You should explore gm_parallax, it’s not to big of a map but I think you might enjoy it! It gives off kind of liminal space/illusion vibes.
