Here's the first of what I hope will be a series of short instructional demos of the new GND-1T speech chip synthesizer released last month. Over 5000 hours in the making, it's a beast of a synth with a highly unique architecture. Like its predecessor the GND-1, the 1T is based on an accurate emulation of the speech chip inside the popular Speak and Spell game, but goes way beyond anything that's possible in hardware.
The design of the new version is heavily geared towards hands-on performance without necessarily needing a computer, and includes a USB host port for minimal setups. But it's equally well suited to a DAW setup with its full parameter set available over MIDI. It now also includes built in effects and drum kits, assignable encoders, a touch screen, and full analog and USB audio I/O.
Everything you hear in these demos is a direct stereo stream recorded from the GND-1T, without any additional processing or effects.

Fun. I remember circuit bending mine by shorting the pins on the expansion port when it came out in 1978. I bought it with my pocket money through one of catalogues that my gran had. Kays, Grattan or Freeman. It wasn't cheap either and a major investment at 10 years old. I must admit I have considered getting a replacement over the years. It's nice to see it getting some love.

exactly :) wtf can u do with it after the first 5 minutes of playing ? sell it for half what u got it for..... lol

@@SanFranciscoFatboy If you have a look at the manual, you'll see there are lots of different ways to use this synth. One of those is to use it as a synth module played by a keyboard in the more traditional way. It has a very deep synth architecture comparable to an advanced modular setup that allows sculpting a huge range of sounds. Probably even more so than most modular setups because it has very unique speech filters in addition to a more standard resonant post filter, and the ability to morph complete parameter sets between patches. These early videos intentionally highlight the more unusual features and modes of the GND-1T. I plan to provide some tutorials on the more standard ways it can be used at a later date. But I can assure you, the sonic range and number of ways this synth can be used, is huge.

Touch screen with three different hidden functions per pad? Everything can be assigned to everything? Sounds like a developers dream: "we can have INFINITE combinations". But from a user experience standpoint, it's a bloody nightmare. You should add twenty dip switches to the back too, with secret, undocumented functions 🤮

You've misunderstood. It's just a single ALT function for some of the pads on the main PATCH page. Where there is more than one parameter shown for the ALT function, it means that on that ALT page those parameters are available. The GUI has specifically been designed to avoid deep menu diving, and has had input from musicians to make it as fluent as possible. The end result is an instrument that can be used very simply by new users via it's circuit-bending-like random functions, as well as for deep synthesis by experienced users.

Very interesting device! So there is USB MIDI in but not DIN MIDI? I would want to sequence it with my drum machines

The GND-1T has both USB and full size 5 pin DIN MIDI I/O connectors. It further has a second USB MIDI host port for controllers, and the regular USB MIDI port also sends and receives 44kHz stereo USB audio. This last feature means if you have an external sampler or drum machine with USB audio out abilities you can send MIDI to it, and have it send its audio back for inclusion in the 1T's stereo stream (and optionally process it through its resonant output filter). I've tested this with the Koala sampling app on iPads and iPhones, and it works a treat.
