Experience Gain is a video series of tips for Game Masters on how to run Dungeons & Dragons and other roleplaying games.
In general I love making videos about art and creativity - whether the medium is comics, Dungeons and Dragons, or anything else! I upload a new video every Friday.
I also make custom content for Dungeons & Dragons available on the DM's Guild here: www.dmsguild.com/browse.php?a...

I play a Gnoll as a character! But he strayed from the Savage Demonlord and actually resided with a tribe in a forest. It's interesting! I put as a flaw that he is an absolute glutton, and eats more than anyone in the party. He got seperated from his pack, but to survive, he had to work with other races in a group to ensure his survival. Through this, despite his Chaotic Nature, he is slowly starting to learn how other civilizations are in his travels, but however, he has to remain hooded and cloaked to keep himself from getting into trouble. Also, i learned and had to role play that they do NOT ask questions. They state, and demand, depending on the scenario. It's actually really fun! You should try it sometime, but that's just my opinion. Cheers! :3 🍖 Also, thank you very much for the info! I'll use this to help develop my Char a little more.

IJ - this is very informative and comprehensive and your passion for the subject matter shows. I’m currently running a campaign in an Arabian / North African setting where I am putting in a Blue Dragon who is served by a coalition of Gnoll tribes / bands. This video has provided me with some good lore and plot points. Keep up the good work

Haha! Well, there aren't that many to get through and most of them are quite a bit shorter! I'm glad you dug this one, too. Let me know if you have any suggestions for video topics!

I'm actually pretty sad about gnolls in 5e. In other past editions there was far more lore variety, with them as hunter-gatherers and mercenaries, for those who were not affected by demonic blood. It gave a chance, much like with orcs and half orcs to not always be defined by a deity, or in this case a demon prince, which should have less power to corrupt then say Gruumsh. That's not to say they can't be extreme enemies with no chance for redemption, like most demons, but that there exist other groups out there that are not monotone in outlook would greatly help people that simply go by the book. It would also allow gnolls to be a monster race like in VGtM along with the others like orcs, goblins, and kobolds.

Definitely! Homebrewing & fleshing it out at your own table is great, but it's always more helpful when the book & rules make it clear from the get go.

I know, which is why I wish they kept previous lore on them the default, so that it could be clear by books and rules that they could be played like the other monstrous races, and have other options for how they could be enemies beyond demon influence, or nominal allies, such as being used by black market lords as mercs. It would also be another chance like orcs and tieflings to them having a character motive to withhold their own nature and master it. Now they are just yet another take on demonic corruption and carnage 100% of the time with no other option. They have to be homebrewed in, and that doesn't seem right, when so many other monstrous humanoid races all have their moments of variety.

There's always a chance that future releases will address this!

Technically possible, but extremely unlikely, given gnolls were already focused on heavily in Volo's Guide to Monsters, all on demon influence, and with other monstrous race PC traits given there. The time to do it was there.

I kinda like them as mindless evil because sometimes that's what the story needs. But I can see how it's better to make them more than that, and I figured that out for several races (including gnolls and orcs) while also making their "forced evilness" into something more dynamic and interesting from a lore perspective. In my settings, Gruumsh has the power to affect creatures within a orcish womb, and those so affected are infused with a natural hatred of anything non-orc. They can go through life much like we can, but if presented with things that are not of the orcs, they become violently enraged. Half-orcs from non-orc mothers are free of that taint and while having a naturally aggressive disposition, they are free to choose. Orcs can also free themselves from Gruumsh's touch because their minds are clear most of the time; angelic means can free their unborn children while fiendish means can free themselves (this is because of the nature of the corruption, and requires the orc who made a fiendish deal to be a cannibal). It's rare to see this happen, however, because Gruumsh promises them much for their dedication to his influence. Likewise (because I like having a pure-evil option), gnolls are connected to Yeenoghu's Hunger. Being free of this would allow the sapient creature beneath the fiend to become realized, but such a thing is rarer because of the mindless nature of his Hunger. While it can happen, it happens way less than the orcs and is probably unique to 1 out of 100 settings. Goblins are just being bullied into being evil in a vast societal-like way (with hobgoblins being promised pride and bugbears being able to be themselves). This means they are free to make their own decisions, but the promise of being drafted into the eternal war under their conquering god weighs heavily on their minds for better or for worse.

Not a D&D player, my gnoll experience is from computer games and Frostgrave (watched this video to help pump me up for my Northstar plastic gnoll box). But naratively there could be a few fun things done with gnolls as you describe them, from shaman trying to become full demons, to playing as a gnoll party. Essentially trying to get your small pack stronger while raiding. As you are working for the strength of the pack with animal instinct, there is no need for the back stabbing soms people associate with playing evil, you don't really need to think of them as evil. It is about survival, maybe with some internal challanges and posturing over loot found. Also, as you are a pack, your main "city" for missions and trade can often be near you, no matter where the GM wants to take the story, as it all moves togther. Gives room for scouting jobs, skirmishes, and larger battles with allied NPCs against towns and other packs. Really, you could pretty well do the storyline from the Vikings tv serries, but as gnolls instead of vikings.

Love taking it the direction of trying to become a full demon, though I’ve also always been fond of tying the party together strongly like you could with a gnoll “pack” - that’s a great concept! You should run it and try D&D!

@@ImaginaryJeremy Well, I am unlikely to do it (I work out of town, two weeks away two weeks home) and have a one year old, so my abilty to commit to a group is lacking. Added to that, the group I would play with are a bunch of old army buddies that are still in, so the group already has a messed up random schedual. That said, the GM often bounces ideas off of me, so I may be able to get him to give it a go. As for the demon idea, that could be one for a group, if either they are willing to have boss character, where most play the henchmen, and one is the shaman trying to ascend to demonhood, that, or if they are lesd willing to have a boss, it could be that either one is trying to acheive it, and the rest are helping because the cheif beleives having a demon with loyalty to the clan would be benificial. With the right group, you could even play after, with one player being the demon still, and the others working along side dpredding mayhem across the lands. Still following the "Vikings" theme, you could increase the size of the clan with this honour, and try attacking full on cities. The world is one's oyster. What I am more likely to do is make a short campaign for Rangers of Shadowdeep from the gnolls' point of view.
