The most frequently asked questions we receive from participants in our earlier programs relate to the Flight Plan feature - the FPL button. So, in this program, we'll take a deep dive on this. Everything from Creating, Saving, Recalling, Deleting, and Transferring flight plans, to inserting and deleting waypoints; bypassing fixes and intercepting legs; adding, removing, changing procedures, and more, will be included.
Although they are now somewhat dated, the Garmin GNS530 and 430 remain ubiquitous in the GA fleet. These powerful navigation devices remain somewhat mysterious to many aviators, so Cap'n Mike will demystify the basics of this very capable equipment. Whether you've had one for years, found a used one on eBay, or just bought an airplane that came with one of these installed, you're sure to understand this gear better after attending this webinar.

57:46 - Great tip and walkthrough. This is something I've been looking into and your video is the most detailed explanation on it! Thank you!

I'm a student pilot who's constantly mystified by the GNS units. My instructor's plane has 430W and while I can eventually get simple things done, the whole unit seems unintuitive to me. These videos have been a great help!

You can do two airports in the GNS 430W and 530W. Have two airports in FPL. Push Procedure. Select Aproach. It will give you procedures for the last airport in the list. Select menu, then menu again. Scroll down to "Select Next FPL Apt?" Choose that option. You will get approaches for the first airport in your list. I use this all the time either practicing approaches or teaching my more advanced instrument students or on IPCs. Good way to have your alternate ready to go, also. Safe flights! Bob.

Thank you for recording this presentation. I really wanted to attend it, but I missed the course. It makes much more sense than reading the manual.

Any time you either go direct to a fix or activate a leg that is below the approach description (i.e., on the approach waypoint list), you activate the approach. Try it on the sim. After you do this then select "activate approach," it will ask if you want to discontinue the approach. I do this all the time. Please disagree if I'm wrong.

Still parsing through your suggestion, but it looks like a good one. Pressing PROC, then MENU (and I have to press MENU twice to get to the "Select Next FPL Apt?" prompt you mention), it'll select the first airport after the active flight plan leg. Next time I'm doing multiple practice approaches, I'll give it a go in the airplane and see how it works in battle, but thanks for the point out!

At 1:19:00 if a missed approach procedure is either straight ahead or an immediate turn, I can hit OBS right away to navigate. But in a missed approach with an initial straight ahead climb to an altitude and and then a climbing turn, do I need to wait until the initial climb is complete to hit the OBS button?
@CapnMikeCFI
@CapnMikeCFI Жыл бұрын
Yes. Excellent question, and I'm very glad you asked it. Just yesterday, I was a Max Trescott program on RNAV (GPS) approaches and was reminded of this. If you press OBS, the navigator will immediately sequence to the next thing in the missed approach segment. Since your GPS doesn't know what altitude you're at, it can't wait until you reach that altitude before sequencing to the next waypoint. The example I just looked at was the RNAV (GPS) 30 approach to KLGB, which climbs straight ahead until 800 feet MSL, then turns direct to the MAHP. If you unsuspend too soon, there are some pesky obstacles in the way that might get your attention. So, yes, fly straight ahead until reaching the designated turn altitude in the missed approach procedure, then press OBS to unsuspend and resume sequencing, and you'll be good to go. I'll cover this in the next program, and thank you for the reminder!

For all who flies in FS2020, I’ve been trying to create a user waypoint in the MOD of GNS 430 and 530 and if Im not mistaken it’s not simulated this page in the sim. 😞

Mike, I don't have your e-mail and am wondering how to get registered for these videos for FAA Safety purposes as I go through them?
@CapnMikeCFI

You can register on the faasafety.gov web site for your (free) Wings Pilot Proficiency Program account. Enter your pilot details, including your qualifications and the types of programs you're interested in, and you'll receive emails of seminars and webinars that align with your designated interests. Almost all these programs are eligible for Wings Basic Knowledge 3 activities, and instructions are given near the end of each program on how to obtain that credit. In most cases, the credit is also available if you watch the recording here on KZfaq. Also, make sure you subscribe to this channel, that way you'll get notifications when new content is available.

Hey everybody... I've had a contact from a person using a GNS530 with a FlightStream 210 and is attempting - unsuccessfully - to perform flight plan transfer between his GNS and an iPad running FlyQ. As near as I can tell, FlyQ is not one of the supported Apps that Garmin says will work, listing only Garmin Pilot, ForeFlight, and FltPlanGO. If you have successfully used FlyQ to transfer flight plans in either or both directions to a GNS navigator using a FlightStream210, can you please contact me at CapnMikeGPS@gmail.com and let me know? Thanks!
