This is so interesting to me. I'm Swedish and I've grown up celebrating Midsummer in a rather traditional way. While Midsummer is mostly associated in modern Sweden as a rather silly and drunk party of sorts, I was taught old traditions by my mother and grandmother. Collecting wildflowers and birch leaves the evening before Midsummer Eve, to bind flower crowns to wear the next day is something I've been doing each year for 30 years now. I find it amazing and beautiful to see these old traditions being a long part of other European cultures as well.

This is even more interesting when you watch their official video for the song: dressed in biohazard suits and facemasks on a hilltop on a dismal foggy day and some concrete suburb in the background. It's more Chernobyl Meets Covid, rather than a spring welcoming in a forest. Quite a powerful contrast.

@@malenaboy ah, I see. I had seen an interview with them at Chernobyl and I believe it's still a Ukrainian trauma. (how can it not be when first your then-overlord turn major swaths of your country into uninhabitable wasteland and then continue to steal parts of your country?) So maybe more that than Covid? I'm purely speculating here. Maybe they just went for the cool look! :D

I intrude in your comments because I also found the choice to shoot the video in a place that looks like Pripyat interesting. As in the official video for Eurovision, in one frame you can see the nuclear power plant: I thought it was a thought-out choice, as if the band wanted to bring life back where life no longer exists.

I'm Italian. Thanks for the interesting and very useful explanation! We won Eurocontest this time, but Shum was the MOST voted song from Italy - if this can soothe your sorrow..;-) The Slav tradition is powerful, and you can really feel the strength in the music. I hope Go_A will partecipate next year, I am becoming a fan of this group: I just found Solovey on youtube, and it is also beautiful, and so it is the "unplugged" version also on KZfaq. PS I do not understand why when I repeat even the simplest Ukrainian word it sounds flat and dull, when YOU say it it is full of nice sounds, rings, music and bird's calls...

Makes sense how _shum_ would be the sound of wind through the trees. In English, I'd use the word _whoosh_ to describe the sound, which is quite similar to _shum._ :-D

I really love the Ukrainian lyrics and language after hearing the song Shum at the Eurovision song contest... Such an addictive sound and lyrics... I try to understand and sing the text but using a somewhat alterered Ukrainian text in English alfabet. I followed your lessons about different Ukrainian alfabet and it looks very difficult.. My native language is Dutch, since I live in Belgium 🇧🇪... So greetings and hopefully I learn some more Ukrainian in the future.

thanks for the explanation, but I assumed that was exactly what it was about, there is a similar custom in every Slavic nation, somewhere on the hills bonfires, fires and scarecrows were lit, so winter chased and spring called... these customs existed until recently in Croatia as well, I remember them in my childhood.... such tunes are very similar to Croatian tunes, the same rhythm and the same or similar text. mostly, thanks to Ukraine for sending such a wonderful song to eurovision! each Slavs heart beats at this rhythm 😁👍 I guess it's in our genes.

When they sing the song, almost all vowels sound more open; 'u' sounds like 'o', 'o' sounds like 'a', 'i' sounds like 'e'. Yet when you read the lyrics the sounds are more closed. Why is that? Is it a singing style?

Singers sometimes modify vowels to access the right note with resonance. The singer is constantly singing in a mix-belt. The 'ee"-vowel constricts the vocal chords so singers will often change their mouthshape to make an 'ay' or 'u' to keep the airflow going without running out of breath.
